Dave B Posted February 1 Posted February 1 This is take 2 on the Alfa. I initially bought a cheap file and got what I paid for. To top it off Phil had just started using his resin printer and was experimenting with resins, the result being an extremely brittle body, so much so I put it away. There was a sale recently and I took the opportunity to download a more detailed file. Phil has worked out a better resin mix so I've gone for it. Have two other builds on the go at the moment so progress will be slow. Tks for looking. Dave B
Pierre Rivard Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Welcome back little Alfa! This time don't show this and then in two weeks BOOM, it's done! We want to see regular progress. This is non negotiable...😉 1 1
steveracer Posted February 2 Posted February 2 (edited) One of my favorite cars. Just a beautiful tiny car with a glorious engine. So, for those NITK... What kit is this What scale Who is Phil How did they cast the engine detail in and under that chassis detail Edited February 2 by steveracer
1959scudetto Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Dave, this will turn out very good (as always from you). But painting all these printed details will be a pain... I see no possibility how I could do that. 1
kensar Posted February 2 Posted February 2 It's clearly a 3D print. Did Phil design and print or just print?

What kit is this What scale Who is Phil How did they cast the engine detail in and under that chassis detail Hi Steve, It is a purchased 3D printable file. Mine is 1/24, approx, and resin printed. Phil is an old mate of mine (50+years) and has a number of filament and resin printers. Not sure how it was drawn but they generally have drawbacks, I'm sure the draftsperson has never built one of there files. Dave
Dave B Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Ok, with plenty of details at the rear I needed to separate the engine cover. With no body lines I've made the cut where I think it needs to be. Had to be careful because it's still a little brittle compared to plastic. As a resin print it has lots of supports I had to remove and that leaves lots of little resin pimples on the inside/underside. These have to be sanded off to allow a neat fit for the body. Sanded away all the excess resin and have a neat fit for the front half, now to mark and scribe the remaining body lines and fix up the crooked cut lines. If you're watching this watching grass growing could be more exciting!! Dave B
Bugatti Fan Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Very intricate. Looks like you will have some fun and games painting all that in situ engine detail ! 1
Dave B Posted February 15 Author Posted February 15 There's an old adage "measure twice cut once" that could also apply to studying photos more closely and cutting once. As you can see from the amount of styrene I didn't take enough notice of the photos!! Never mind, I have the body sitting about right so it's time to sand and apply some primer. Summer over here so this could take a while. Dave B
Rich Chernosky Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Starting to really shape up Dave. Look forward to seeing this complete. You always do such cool subjects no else covers. 1
Dave B Posted February 17 Author Posted February 17 Gone off on a tangent as usual. Because the engine is reasonably detailed I decided to try and remove the injection and replace with some nice chrome items. So far so good, now I just have to clean it all up. Dave B
Dave B Posted February 21 Author Posted February 21 Quick update, have applied first coat of undercoat and stop putty and sanded back. Even though it's a resin print you can clearly see the steps. Also made the injection trumpets and trial fitted. Dave B 1
Pierre Rivard Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Taking pictures along the way helps a lot as a snapshot picks up irregularities we can sometimes miss. A few more passes will be needed but no doubt your expert body shop will take care of business! 1
MarkJ Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Dave, have you any reference photos of the target? I'm totally tuned in but aching for more knowledge about the build.
Dave B Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Hi Mark, yes have some reference material but the net is still a great place for more info. As usual I'm doing things back the front. Started building, ordered Pattos decals, then decided I'd better decide which one to build. So it's going to be the 1975 Zeltweg 1000 winner, chassis #11512-010. Dave B
MarkJ Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Looks like some great reference material you have there. Looking forward to more wip entry's. 1
Dave B Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 For those of you who wondered what my printed pieces look like when I get them here's an example. Wheel and tyre as received with supports, supports broken off and prepared ready for paint. Just imagine how many supports are inside a body including all the detail around the engine and suspension of the chassis!! Dave B 1
1959scudetto Posted March 28 Posted March 28 (edited) Looks like a lot of work to prepare alone the wheels... By the way, I have the very same books in my library - good reference material as far as original racing pictures go (on the web you find more easily pics of the refurbished cars like they look today - as I have seen at the Porsche museum: cars look splendid, but there are some deviations in details to the cars as raced back in the day) Edited March 28 by 1959scudetto
Dave B Posted April 15 Author Posted April 15 Have taken a break for a while whilst working up the courage to grind off, with a Dremel and diamond point, the moulded in distributor and spark plug leads. After making sure I could make the distributor and leads I started grinding!! All I hope now is I can fit the distributor I made!! Dave B
Pierre Rivard Posted April 15 Posted April 15 Definitely is my friend. Nice to see you "back on the job" 1
Dave B Posted April 20 Author Posted April 20 Well, that's the chassis finished. Not as good as a bought kit but better than nothing and a reasonable improvement over what I started with. Now onto the body. Tks for looking. Dave B 1
