Waiting on decals for the Bronco and of course...Squirrel !!!!

So I was watching Barnfind Hunters on The Tube of You, and Tom Cotter comes across this

Looked at my shelf and saw this ..

IMG_20250221_155500573_HDR.jpg.c0759d18c5bfe709fc7db846092c993f.jpg

yep

So on we go....picked up this kit many...many years ago from who knows where ..missing glass and chrome, it was sitting in the stock car pile, measured for nerf bars, window screen and big fat dirt tires....but hold on...

The frame and suspension were glued in badly by the previous owner,... left all the seam lines...yay...not too bad tho

IMG_20250221_160620382_HDR.jpg.a644b9bd0334060faf339ebb1f3848f1.jpg

Found some steelies in the gift that keeps on giving, ..the venerable,... Revell ...( say it with me) '32 5 window 2in1...added those to some parts pak black walls

IMG_20250221_164304183_HDR.jpg.6d29a0120d46a317a69e1c2d1d45b30f.jpg

Not too bad....

Now colour... to the paint fridge

IMG_20250221_170118760.jpg.a618d6191e975e166e402e768cd9e8db.jpg

Top row 3rd from the left

IMG_20250221_171058462.jpg.fc5bdd1d66d935dfe7f693f3565d27fa.jpg

On the right is True Blue Duplicolor, on the left Royal Blue. same...I'm thinking left, Royal

IMG_20250221_164631518_HDR.jpg.5249cf44c9b26f10f7b4e3c39cf308e1.jpg

All of this car is stock as the story goes, brake ducts and stiffer shocks not withstanding ..so really,.it should be a simple oob with some decals...right .?

...the sound of that 409 thru straight pipes tho...

Hope you like it, Q.C.&C.s welcome

Do you have any more reference photos?  I had no idea Dan ever drove a Chevy. Is this Nascar, or USAC, or did he drive it overseas? Inquiring minds need to know.

Back in the 60's when Gurney was racing F1, alot of the drivers would race in the support races before the big F1 race. This car raced at Silverstone in the BSCC (British saloon car championship),...MkII  Jaguars, Minis, Volvo Amazons, Ford Zephyrs, stock production cars...

Oh by the way - that Tam kit has the best 24th scale Jag XKE engine - - - i cant think of anything Gurney didnt drive in his racing career - except i dont recall any front drive Indy cars …

Thanks, Bruce. Wow, didn't even require a roll bar. But I bet that Impala was safer than the f1 cars back then, so no sweat for Dan to drive that car. Your build turned out most excellent as always and I learned a lot too.

That's the real car Mark...Haven't started the kit yet...just doing research and tracking down parts so far...

Going through my decal stash, I found out I kept the decals for the Impala, and found some suitable meatballs and numbers from the amt Sunbeam Tiger kit.

I need some suggestions on clear coating decals...not sure these 40 yr. old? Impala decals will stand up to water as they are.....

See there, Bruce. You fooled me. I just assumed that was your build. I was wondering how you got that floor to look so real. Has that car been in a museum some where to look so good. That's a 64-year-old car. My dad had the 4 door sedan Bel Air version of that car that had a 283 and a powerglide transmission. My mom drove it from Virginia to Texas in 1962 and I was her copilot at 10 years old watching the map in case we got separated from my dad who was pulling his 15 foot mfg boat behind his 1954 Cadillac Sedan Deville. It got kind of dicey when we went through New Orléans at quitting time. Thats when we lost touch with him. Somehow, we got back together again. Nasa transferred him from Langley a.f.b to Houston where MSC was going to be built.

After Dan raced it, he sold it to a British driver who later turned it into a tow/farm car and put an inline 6 in it...

It was then bought by another Brit who did a full body off resto on it...

If you get a chance, watch the YouTube video at the top of this post....worth the watch

Well I couldn't help myself...spent the morning wet sanding all the mould lines, attached the front and rear valances, Primed with white sandable (Duplicolor) waited 3 hours and wet sanded some Ziggy hairs out of it and shot it with Duplicolor Royal Blue...

IMG_20250222_202203251.jpg.0c10e70535ac17becdd1c9ab68749026.jpg

IMG_20250222_202132279(1).jpg.09cb61c52fd987919ad8caf80475069d.jpg

Tested the decals by cutting out the license plates, sprayed 1 (top one) with Duplicolor Acrylic Lacquer clear,...2 light coats.

After letting them sit 4 hours, I dunked them in the water and kept them wet until they started moving....they didn't...not one bit all afternoon. I kept massaging them with a wet paint brush, but nothing, so I went in with a new #11 and was able to get the blade between the decal and the paper...the untreated one (bottom) exploded..the top one came off the paper grudgingly, but had all the paper fluff on the back. So I turned it over and started cleaning...whew. I went ahead and shot the rest of the decals with clear

On a happier note, I built a '59 Impala (Monogram 1:25) some years ago for my parents anniversary (their wedding car) sealed up hood and totally forgot I still had the 409 sitting in a box.

I will need to exchange the carbs and intake to a 4 barrel, but...I have those in the stash...

It's starting to come along...Oh and a big shout out to TJ (Jollysipper) who has offered to help out in the glass and chrome department..

Woohoo! thanks TJ

Cheers

Great project. I am a huge Dan Gurney fan having seen him race back in the day and actually met him in 2006. I always associated Dan with Fords so was surprised when this Chevy reemerged.

Shot the chassis (assembled) with some grey primer, masked and shot the frame, masked again and shot the tank

IMG_20250223_111023856_HDR.jpg.4458c37263daad6256df64af558135a0.jpg

And added some sheet stiffeners to the wells and masked and sprayed black

Off to a fast start. Having such a nice built & painted 409 sitting in a box helps! 😁

I doesn't hurt Pierre..Everything is coming out of the spare parts stock and I'm finding most everything I need.

Plus the good luck of being here at MCM, the good folks are always around to help.

Just wait.. there will be a surprise coming soon...

This may turn into a full blown diorama

So I got to put it back together with some spare parts from my stores..

More soon I hope

Foiled and masked...this is what I hate most,    masking....anxiety while modelling...

IMG_20250225_114846240_HDR.jpg.5ddfd146a7d9c310c250d881b0eae5b0.jpgIMG_20250225_141055500.jpg.4c4ba7ed9543f033edb80a9d782f45e7.jpg

Whew !!!

It will need a little wet sanding of the transition before masking it and shooting blue again tonight.

Cheers

That is a very delicate foiling and masking operation. Anxious moments for sure. I admire your skills there, not something I am capable of doing... not even close!

I saw that video too. I too am a big Dan Gurney fan. He and Albert Einstein were my childhood heroes.  I don't have any '61 Impalas in my stash. I will be keeping an eye out for one now.
