Well, this has been a weird year. In March, I was given $2,000 to move from my old apartment. I moved in with some friends, and most of my stuff is in storage in the next county. Here in Flint, we have the Genesee County Land Bank, which manages foreclosed and abandoned properties. I put in a $500 bid for a two- story dwelling near Mott College, and they accepted it last week. My buddy and I emptied all the junk out of this place and now we're waiting for a bit more cash (thought I had the Healey sold last night, but it didn't happen). I'm hoping to move in by the first of June, and then I can finish my secret project. The house is in great shape, actually. The floors are solid, there's a new roof and it even came with an upright piano. What was nuts is that we also hauled out 2700# of scrap metal. Apparently, someone was using the place for storage, but hey, I no longer will have to deal with anymore jack@$$ landlords.

thats just what i was gonna say: you bought a HOUSE on a piece of LAND for 500$????

wow. ive heard of low but thats less than you pay for a fixer upper CAR!

good luck to you; it'll be work but in the end youll have a place you like and control of your own destiny (no landlords i mean!)

I wish I got that kind of deal when I got my house several years ago! B)

Anyway, you'll find a WORLD of difference between renting and owning. The breaking point for me when I wanted to move was every landlord getting neurotic when I mentioned that I had two cats.

I finally put my foot down and decided to BUY a home..........so if I want to put a pink elephant in the basement-----I can do so without a neurotic landlord. B)

Congratulations on the house! The price makes me shudder at what my Michigan home must be worth (I didn't bother trying to sell it when I moved-just put it up for rent...).

Home ownership is a completely different world from renting. Yes, you have to fix everything, but you actually like doing it! And living somewhere that you can make your own is a whole new feeling of comfort.

Yep, $500. Last Friday I had it appraised, as it sits, for $15,000. My guess is that somebody had inherited the house, used it for storage and let it go for taxes. This might become my new cash cow- buying homes from the Land Bank, rehabbing them and then selling them. Best birthday present ever.

Well Harold , if ya get down to this side of the Mason - Dixion Line and yer looking for someone who actually has contracting experence , look me up. I owned my own cabinet building company and I used to do do floors, Vynil , and sometimes roofing . I always hated the roofing cause it was so darned hot by mid day.. Besides , I need to buy stuff for my 1-1 model, a 1978 Ford F-100 !!!!!!!!!!!! Ed Shaver

Before you get all excited, remember this is Flint, Mich. Not exactly the heartland of America and not very prosperous. You can buy houses in Detroit for one dollar, but who would want to live there? Some have bought and tried to fix up houses in Detroit, but either they are stolen-cleaned out, or torn up long before they're finished. I'll take this small Texas town.

Well, evereybody has to be someplace. Michigan is where most of my family is at, and I just gradumitated from UM-Flint. Plus, the house is in a decent location. I found out that my assumptions were almost right. According to the little old lady who lives across the street, the house had been boarded up for thirty years, The owner fancied himself as an antique dealer, but she said it was mostly junk that he packed inside the place (boy, did I find that out...). As for the piano, I've determined it's an 1896- 1901 Ivers and Pond upright. They were on the same level as Steinway in terms of quality. There's even a tag on the inside that says it was specially selected and voiced for a music hall in Saginaw. Now, if I could just sell my Healey...

I'll bet that piano is worth a few bucks!
