obs.caleb Posted May 21 Posted May 21 Has anyone else had this problem? I had posted something in the wanted section yesterday and got a response today. The account was obviously a bot and they were saying Identical responses on multiple threads. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Xingu Posted May 21 Posted May 21 Yes, these guys are always finding ways to get around the security measures we put in place. If it sounds fishy or too good to be true, report it to the Admins so we can look into it. Please remember that we do our best to catch these type of things before they can reach our members, but we cannot stop them all. You guys will have to use your own judgement and common sense to keep these guys from scamming you. 2 2
peteski Posted May 21 Posted May 21 I thought that for some time now new member's posts are moderated. How did a 4-hour-old member manage to post directly to the forums?
bobthehobbyguy Posted May 21 Posted May 21 Posts are moderated however pms are not. I dont think the mods have a way to moderate them. here needs to be a block on pms till a post count is established. That would prevent this from happening. 1
stitchdup Posted May 21 Posted May 21 i believe pms can only be limited if the moderation is applied by us. I dont think it is applied to the auto moderation at the start of a membership. It may be it only happens when its a time limit moderation rather than the post count 1

stitchdup Posted May 22 Posted May 22 If you use the trade section the best advice i can give is trust your gut. And try to keep your messaging to the forum. scammers wont want to use the pm system as it saves the evidence so they will try and get you to use emails as its very easy to make them say they are from someone else. For example, if michael jackson emails saying he;s not really dead and needs $400 for recording time, that could very well be a scam (I chose that one cos i just read it elsewhere, lol) 1
bobthehobbyguy Posted May 25 Posted May 25 (edited) This is known was the WTB scam. The pattern for the scam is you get a pm from a new member with zero post count referring you to someone else who supposedly has the item you are looking for. You will be ripped off. The last time this happened if you google the contacts email address you will see it is often being used for scamming others on other sites also. Edited May 25 by bobthehobbyguy 1

How does the scammer GET anything if his buddy supposedly has something YOU want? I can't see how it could be anything more than a few bucks chump change for a part and maybe some shipping. Kind of a shame somebody would want to work so hard scamming for nickels and dimes. Nah, not a shame. The word I want is pathetic.
bobthehobbyguy Posted May 25 Posted May 25 I agree Bill that it's for small amounts in this case but that doesn't seem to bother them. All i know is the scam is quite prevalent where ever people are looking for items. 1
stitchdup Posted May 25 Posted May 25 this type of scam isn't about the money. just replying shows you are succeptible and you'll be targeted after that. thats why they want you to email
