gtx6970 Posted Wednesday at 11:38 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:38 PM Ive had the Monogram kit but its 1/20th scale Im interested in a similar ( not necessarily that exact version) But in 1.25th scale What are my options I have my eye on an accurate miniatures kit , But its $60 plus postage . Puts it above where I would prefer to pay
Mark Posted Wednesday at 11:51 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:51 PM I'd cough up for the Accurate Miniatures kit. From what I have heard and read from various sources, it's unlikely that it will ever be produced again. I can't see anyone else doing a styrene kit, maybe someone will do a 3D print one though.
gtx6970 Posted Thursday at 01:38 AM Author Posted Thursday at 01:38 AM (edited) Looking at this one. It kinda sorta looks like the old Monogram kit from my youth. ( I built one of them back in the day ,,,. But the car is huge compared to anything else I have) Just smaller scale Anyone thats built this kit, care to chime in with details please Edited Thursday at 01:44 AM by gtx6970
stavanzer Posted Thursday at 02:30 AM Posted Thursday at 02:30 AM $60.00 is a Steal nowadays. If you want one, I'd jump on it. Friend of mine sold his for an even Hundred last year.

The difference is in the wing height and a few other components that differentiate between the 1969 & 1970 seasons. Like others have said these have never been reissued, so the cost is what the cost is when it comes to the secondary market. It's presumed that Academy would be in possession of the molds since they seem to have the rest of the AM stuff, but unlike the '63 Vette there doesn't seem to be anyone out there that wants (or can afford the licensing) to do a private label re-pop of the M8B
Chris V Posted Thursday at 09:44 AM Posted Thursday at 09:44 AM Your options are relatively limited. There's the following to choose from: Tamiya (1:18) McLaren M8A MPC (1:20) McLaren Mk8B (rare) McLaren Mk8D Accurate Miniatures (1:25) 1969 McLaren M8B (Bruce McLaren/Denny Hulme) 1970 McLaren M8B (Lothar Motschenbacher) 1971 McLaren M8B (Oscar Koveleski/Tony Adamowicz) The Accurate Miniatures kits are by far the most detailed. Model Car Garage even offers a photoetched detail set for this kit.
Dragline Posted Thursday at 11:38 AM Posted Thursday at 11:38 AM These AM kits are a bit of a bear to build. Panels are kinda iffy after all is said and done. There are a couple of videos on the solutions on YouTube. If you get one I would recommend watching them. As far as accuracy goes, nothing beats em. And for 60.00 I would say it's a relative bargain. You won't regret it. 1
sfhess Posted Thursday at 07:04 PM Posted Thursday at 07:04 PM The 1/20 scale kits referenced were made by MPC, not Monogram.

The Junkman Posted Friday at 03:24 AM Posted Friday at 03:24 AM Scalemates lists an Academy Mclaren M8A. I've never seen one but there are two currently up on EvilBay. No idea how good or bad it is. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/academy-minicraft-1529-mclaren-m8a--1245291

There's a basic body there, but everything else is lacking. Motor Racing Replica News did an article on what was needed (hint: a lot) to make it decent. But at one point it was pretty much the only game in town if you wanted a 1/24 M8 - until the Accurate Miniatures kit came along.
Matt Bacon Posted Friday at 11:28 AM Posted Friday at 11:28 AM MRRN #40 has an article on the Accurate Miniatures kit and a lot of detail on the versions of the real thing. Be warned, though: their conclusion is that the bdy can't be made to fit the chassis unless you replace all the vinyl hoses with something softer and better-behaved... best, M. 1
tim boyd Posted Friday at 01:01 PM Posted Friday at 01:01 PM I did a "Classic kits" column in the all-genre model magazine a year or so ago, about the Accurate Miniatures McLaren. It included a summary of assembly critiques from several respected modelers and some of the inside story on the kit development from one of the Accurate Miniatures principals. Might be worth searching out for those deeply interested in the kit... TB
