PlasticWagens Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Gregg, Since you mentioned it, are your doors flat without any details or do you put a piece of tempered glass on top? Oh and per your request here is a reminder to get that thing done!
Pete J. Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Everyone, make sure you bug me to get this out this weekend.I may have to buy another door to build this on. 'K, Gregg - Consider yur sef bugggged. I juss no, i'ss got ta be weekend ober 'n haywiya!
elan Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I see them on- line for $189.00 + shipping and that's from this side of the Pacific. The might get down to $150 before Xmas. It's going to be a popular kit. I'm sure it not a perfect kit, but you have to give Trumpeter credit for bring out a kit this expensive in a economic climate like this. It would have been easy to put it on the backburner for a while.

MrObsessive Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Well, I got a nice big box from Mr. Postman not long after I got home from work this morning. Yup, this fine kit is now in a good home-------and I'm VERY impressed! I haven't even check all the parts out yet as there's so many. Some things do need to be dechromed though............. The body is absolutely perfect IMO and I love how they packaged it! This one's definitely a keeper, but don't ask when I'll be able to build it! I've got something else planned after the Cougar II, but no big scale on the agenda.
Pete J. Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Everyone, make sure you bug me to get this out this weekend. I may have to buy another door to build this on. Hmmmm, ok, guess you ment this weekend Oh well, if you get it out any time soon, I'll be happy.
Zoom Zoom Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 No super detail kit from Scale Motorsport: Details here
Guest Davkin Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Yes, I got that email myself this morning. I doubt I'll buy the kit now. If it's not good enough for SMS to invest their resources into then it's probably not a kit I want. David
elan Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 That's very interesting. Every review of the kit I've seen is very positive. Not sure I understand.
Zoom Zoom Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 That's very interesting. Every review of the kit I've seen is very positive. Not sure I understand. It's one thing to review a model by opening the box and looking at the parts. It's another to delve deeper into a kit by actually building it, which sounds like Scale Motorsport did to a point before making their decision. The vast majority of large scale models never get built (remove "large scale" and the conclusion is still the same). Buyers are enamored by all the parts and details and the dream in a box, but often are intimidated by the scope of actually building it. Others take it to the next level by purchasing super detail kits that also rarely get built. Big dreams, not enough time, intimidation factor. I have no idea what the tipping point was for Scale Motorsport, but I'm sure others will fill the void somehow, and any serious builder of this scale will probably still like the kit. I'll bet that the Asian-based cottage industry will offer super detail kits of some sort. What would be helpful to all potential builders is an out-of-box buildup of the kit that defines the areas that work and also the areas that need work.

If it's not good enough for SMS to invest their resources into then it's probably not a kit I want. David I wouldn't write off the kit based on what SMS says...........having the kit up close and personal in my house, I can tell you it's worth the money to have! Yes, it does take time to do this one right as Bob said, but one of the reasons I bought the kit is because I absolutely love this era of racers.......especially the GT40's. As Bob also said, it would be nice if someone did a step by step out of box build of the car to see where the foibles are. If fortunes turn my way in the coming months, I may buy another and do just that. By that time the price may have come down somewhat and it won't be as ouch inducing to buy one. Just my 2¢ FWIW.........
Guest Davkin Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 (edited) I'm not exactly a fanatic of this genre, but the subject does interest me enough that if the right kit came along I would consider building one, but only if I could do it to a high level of detail using aftermarket support. In otherwords, I was really only interested in building it if SMS supplied a detail kit for it. Since SMS is not going to support this kit I'm not that interested in the kit. I have plenty of other modeling project ideas that capture my interest enough for me to do whatever it takes to build them to a high level on my own, the GT40 isn't one of them. I'm sure there are some modelers that will do some amazing things with this kit and I look foward to seeing those build threads. David Edited July 17, 2009 by Davkin

Just my 2¢ FWIW......... By no means write it off. SMS has made some great points. A lot of the kit goes together very nicely and Matthew said so. The issue is that it will probably make a very nice shelf model. For the person who uses SMS detail sets(I have 5 935 sets, just completing my 2nd) we are use to making a museum quality reproduction. Unfortunately, this kit will not be that with out a lot of replacement parts. Prominent structures will take a lot of effort to remake. For instance - on the real car, the rear body work is held in place by a delicate framework of tubes that bolt to the trans axle. There are two luggage boxes(yea, in that era one of the requirements was that a car be able to carry two standard Samsonite suitcases) are incorporated into that frame. The kit has what look like two large 2X4's coming out of the rear to hold it in place. A similar structure occurs in front to hold the front body work in place. This is major surgery. Also, the suspension looks IMHO very toy like. It looks like Trumpeter was more concerned with making "working suspension" and getting it to look right. I don't know about you, but it screams "toy" to me. I really don't care if it works. I am not going to play with it on the floor. To get that "working" they had to make compromises in the size of the members and the struts. The brakes are just ugly and the calipers are all wrong. Now having said that, it is just a matter of how you build. If you want a really nice model for your display cabinet, this is just that. The exterior and the rims are spot on. I hope someone casts some replacement rear tires as the profile is wrong(fronts look OK). I am sure that someone will take is kit and lavish a lot of time and effort on it and get all the details right, but it will be a multi-year project and I will stand in awe of that persons. It just won't be me doing it. I have three more 935's to build.
Harry P. Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Come on, guys! Where's your ingenuity, your sense of DIY??? I can't believe anyone would take a pass on such a long-awaited kit just because there is no aftermarket detail set available! There's nothing that can't be scratchbuilt with just a little patience and a little ingenuity. I would think that any modeler who "has what it takes" to build a kit as complex as the GT could easily add all the scratchbuilt detail himself without relying on the aftermarket. For example, I added a TON of detail to this old 1/8 Jaguar kit... many details were flat-out missing from the kit, so I scratched them up. Electric fan, detailed tie rod, road draft tube, carb linkages, etc., etc. And everything was built with the simplest, most basic stuff... straight pins, plastruct tubing, sheet styrene, wire, thin aluminum sheet, etc. Nothing exotic, nothing complicated, just very basic scratchbuilding that anyone can do. There is NO aftermarket anything in these photos, even the hose clamps are scratchbuilt of thin strips of aluminum. Anyone can do this... you don't need to pass on a kit because there's no aftermarket parts for it. Do it yourself!
CAL Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I am sure that is it. You have a $260 kit and another $650 in a super detail kit, that $900 and you'd still need to a bunch of fabrication to make it a top quality model. I don't see it happening. Sound more like one of those kits that you have to take for what it is and make the best of it without going broke or driving yourself completely mad.

Heck, Harry, you can build the entire thing from scratch(ala Wingrove) if you are willing to invest the time and money! I just spent the afternoon at Sherline and their museum is awe inspiring. Compaired to that stuff, we are just wacking on rocks with flint hammers! Running V 4s and Offenhausers in 1:8 scale. Come on, there is always something better. Unfortunately, I have other things to invest my time in. It is a choice and each of us makes it. I am not willing to invest that much time in this model. My choice I would love to see some one do it though.

I could turn this model kit into a museum quality masterpiece if I wanted to invest the copiuous amounts of time and energy that would be required to do so, I just don't want to. David
Pete J. Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hmmmm, ok, guess you ment this weekend Oh well, if you get it out any time soon, I'll be happy. Hmm, I guess Gregg is back on island time. Just remeber Gregg you asked for the buggin'. Any current opinions? Just a hint. Please?
Gregg Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 I need a bigger table!!! Seriously, just getting everything together has been a pain. I will do updates this week. I agree though, the kit will be a great curbside. We'll see about taking it past that.
jbwelda Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 >if the right kit came along <cough>birdcage maserati<cough> im feeling kind of congested tonite <cough>D-type Jaguar<cough>
Gregg Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 Okay, I finally made room on the bench After starting the motor, I threw all the chrome trees in the chrome stripper machine (aka Easy Off Oven Cleaner). There are just too many mold lines. You could get away with touch ups, but then it looks like touch ups. I will have to buy more than a few of bottles of Alclad.
