fatkidd Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 This morning I was opening up the trunk and doors on the re-release AMT '66 Chevy Nova Pro Street and slipped. I ended up slicing my left middle finger pretty bad...more like a fillet. Well, almost 3 hours, money outta my pocket (which I don't really have), and 11 stitches later I'm home enjoying my Sunday So, I figured this would be a good time to remind everyone to be safe when doing what we love. I'm so frustrated and aggrivated at myself for not fully paying attention to what I was doing I know, I know...I'm a dumb dumb (and i don't mean a lollipop).
vizio93 Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 OUCH . how long do you have to have the stitches ?
fatkidd Posted September 21, 2009 Author Posted September 21, 2009 As of now, they are saying at least 10 days. I have to go back in 2 days to make sure that there is no infection and whatnot. looks like i won't be working on a model for a bit. But that is ok, it gives me a chance to get things organized and see what i have.
Custom Hearse Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Wait til you drop one and it goes into your leg... YEEEEEEOOOOOOWWWWWWWCCCCCCCCHHHH!!!!
Rick Schmidt Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Wait til you drop one and it goes into your leg... YEEEEEEOOOOOOWWWWWWWCCCCCCCCHHHH!!!! Been there done that. Was cutting the springs on my GT500 .... on the edge of the desk like a fool .... exacto slipped and I stabbbed myself in the thigh just above the knee. I swear stabbing hurts worse than flat out cutting yourself. Didn't help where I did it either can't do much without moving your leg
Joe Handley Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Wait til you drop one and it goes into your leg... YEEEEEEOOOOOOWWWWWWWCCCCCCCCHHHH!!!! Almost did that with a body reamer last year, it fell out of the cap and landed tip down on the floor next to my bare foot
Pete J. Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 (edited) Oh, the tools that we use! The sharper they are the better they work, the more damage they do. I couldn't even count the things in my tool box that would take out and eye, slice a finger, sever a tendon, poke a foot. All things that we need to look after. Rule #1-Keep a clean desk, that way things don't wind up in your lap or in the top of your foot. Rule #2-Stuff rolls. Stationary stores make triangular thingees(the technical term) that keep pens from rolling off desks. They work great for tools. Get a bunch of them. Rule #3- Use a tool as it is intended to be used. Scribers and photo etched saws work best for opening panels. Get some and don't be cheap. The tools cost less than the medical bills. Rule #4- Think about what you are doing before you do it. Keep flesh out of the line of cutting of the tool. Rule #5 - Think these rules don't apply to you?? Read the above posts Be safe. How do you think I know these rules? bobss396 Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 The worst xacto mishap I ever saw was my bro Will slicing his left thumb from the tip, through the nail and well up his thumb. Arguably one of the most ghastly wounds I have yet to see. It was on a non-modeling project, he was cutting against a scale and the knife slipped off the scale. Bob
samdiego Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 (edited) I'll see your eleven stitches and raise you 4 more and a severed tendon. Yes, an xacto injury. I have a different splint now, but am still looking at a month more with it on my arm. Edited September 21, 2009 by samdiego

I have a different splint now, but am still looking at a month more with it on my arm. Worst injury ever, though more than one from an Exacto knife, was a hand mitre saw. Sharp little booger cut down within just thousandths of a blood vessel in my leg. Ouch! At least the E.R. doctor was a hottie. Gary

I went back at it on the Nova and got the trunk opened, and the doors removed. now i just have to hinge them and go from there. i'm taking it easy for now. really doesn't hurt too bad, unless i straighten it. i go back today so they can check it and make sure that it isn't infected. i'll keep ya'al posted on what they say. happy modeling, Fatkidd

marinewifejones Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 And as Clay can attest. Xacto knives should not be used in moving vehicles. fortunatly he just got a small cut.
