Harry P. Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Ok, guys... as you know, the "off topic" posts pop up here every so often. Some of us like the give and take, others think we shouldn't be posting anything like that. Some of us are inspired, some of us are offended. In the interest of democracy, I'm asking you to vote! Should we have an off-topic forum for those who want to talk politics, etc.? Or should we keep this group of ours focused strictly on model cars and nothing else? It's your forum... You decide!
Custom Hearse Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I feel in all fairness that each person have a say in what we believe in. If a person doesn't like it, they don't have to join in. If everyone can keep it clean that is. There are some people who go to any length to upset the apple cart, and make other peoples opinions sound atrocious. That would be the only problem I foresee...
Guest arni Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 To add a seperate 'politics' section is fine by me,Ijust dont want to read anything about politics....
mageckman Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Personally, I would rather see a section set aside just for the politics and religious stuff that people have a tendency to clutter the rest of the site with. It is rather annoying to open a post expecting to see something on models and it is nothing but a religious/political debate with a few things about models thrown in. Just my 2 cents, for what its worth.
E St. Kruiser50 Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 GREAT IDEA HARRY I JUST VOTED. NOW IT CAN BE KEPT WHERE NO ONE WILL READ IT ,IF THEY DON'T LIKE OFF-TOPIC STUFF .
george 53 Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Harry, ain't this kinda like the "Enter at your own risk" topic I suggested earlier this year? Anyway, YEAH, it sounds good, gives the member FULL warning that the topics MAY not be to their likeing, and NOT to enter if they can't take it! GREAT idea to me, but then again, that's just me! Go for it Bro!
Zoom Zoom Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 NO. I look at "view new posts" when I come here...I don't want to see any political stuff show up in that list. I don't bloody care what side of the fence one's political viewpoints are, either. This place is for model cars. There are countless places on the 'net to discuss your politics with passion. This place should be free of that stuff. I get enough bombardment of political stuff in other places, including Facebook. If I have to sift through a bunch of that nonsense here, I have no further reason to visit. It kills my enthusiasm for my hobby when I have to be subjected to it from every corner, and if the hobby becomes entrenched in that nonsense, then it's no longer a hobby for me. Is it too much to ask that we keep divisive issues off of forums like this? Seriously...you guys can blather on all you want in other places. This place will be ruined, for me, if it goes down the path of allowing political discussion. Please do not do it.
Rob Hall Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 No. Please take the political and religion discussion elsewhere, along with other non-automotive off topic material. I'll admit that I've been guilty of jumping in the fray myself in the past--I do like a good debate, but this really isn't the place for it. It just clutters up the forum....random off topic posts have made other modeling forums and mailing lists largely unusable.
Scott Colmer Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I've gotten tired of the religion/politics debates. There are plenty of sites for that type of discussion. I never signed up for them for a reason. However, I actually liked the 2012 thread. I am afraid that we may lose the enjoyment of people's MODEL CAR input because they are put off by a debate on politics, religion, etc.. I do not think those lines of conversation are what a quality MODEL CARS site should sponsor. I voted no. Scott
Lyle Willits Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 There are thousands of online sites for other topics. This is a MODEL CAR FORUM. No problem with someone cracking a joke, etc. but hardcore off-topic stuff does not belong here. The constant off-topic posts years ago on the "Please pray for my dead cat" board is what drove many of us to this forum.
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 I see where the trend is going here. Let's leave the poll open for a day or two, but I already can see what the verdict will be. Ah, democracy in action! It's a good thing!
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 The constant off-topic posts years ago on the "Please pray for my dead cat" board is what drove many of us to this forum. Yeah, even I can see where that can get pretty annoying!
FujimiLover Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I'd like an off-topic thread. I post a lot of off-topic subjects under general cause there is no other place they would fit. So off-topic would certainly work for me. A few of the other forums I belong too have off-topics and it works well for them. Threads of mine such as playlists, movies, name that tune, et'c should be placed under off-topic catagory. General should be strictly for anything in "general" to do with cars.
Modelmartin Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Even though I have been in many of those debates I vote no. It creates too much bad feeling. Many people can debate and show respect to others who differ in their opinions. However there are too many who name call and instead of laying out their views and arguments for their viewpoint, they slander the opposition and ascribe very negative qualities to them. It is really very tedious and exasperating. I like an intellectual discussion of issues, not diatribes of delusional garbage. I am all for zapping any threads on politics and religion.
Guest arni Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 So....If you dont like a thread, dont read it anymore..Simple when you think about it...
cruz Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 (MODELCARS)mag.com forum, I think this pretty much sums it up......
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 So....If you dont like a thread, dont read it anymore..Simple when you think about it... Yeah, but like Bob said, if you participate here by clicking the "View New Posts" link, the posts aren't separated by section... it's all the new posts, regardless of topic... so you never know which of the posts are "off topic" or not. You can't always tell from the title of the post what the actual subject will be...I think that's what bugs some people. They click on a post and they find out it's about something off topic.
Eshaver Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Some of you are going to hate me for saying this but first - ya don't have to look at it ! Secondly there is such a thing as Free Speech here in the United States ! Try that in Europe or Austraila or Iran ............... Ed Shaver

I would just like to point out that even sometimes those of us who are participating are put off by the nastiness and namecalling by some other participants. If I didn't care I would just pass it by which I already do with a lot of other threads and even sometimes I will pass over a thread depending on who started the thread. It looks like there are several good reasons for dropping all of the politics and religion. Right, Harry?
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 It looks like there are several good reasons for dropping all of the politics and religion. Right, Harry? More good reasons to drop it than keep it...
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 I think most of us come on here to get away from all that carp. This will definitely remain a strict "No fish" zone...
B_rad88 Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 i say NO , because this site should stay for models and for car topics ONLY!!!!! anything else is useless and pointless, everyone has there belives and there opinions, and they should keep that to them selfs! i say keep this site for models and cars only!
FujimiLover Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 (edited) Wait a minute, I think I'm confused now. I thought this was for having an "off topic" category which could be anything we wanted. Is this now for a political/religious topic? I'd say no against that as there are other forums for those sort of conversations. But if it is for ANY other off-topic subject, then yes. ..................I went ahead and voted no since I read this as political debates. Please correct me if I'm wrong? Edited October 11, 2009 by FujimiLover
chris coller Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 If it would a apeaze the general public I am all for it. The thing that bothers me as someone will post about a subject than it goes way off topic, becomes a political tirade and someone trying to push their views on others. If you want to talk politics and other general B.S. then by all means....................DO IT! I visit this site to escape from the above mentioned and try to contribute to the modeling community the best I can. So again if it make folks happy to air their feeling on other subjects not pertaining to the modelers out there than GO FOR IT. This will cause issue from arising from the guys that are here strictly for the modeling experience!
crazyjim Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Zoom Zoom - Bob Downie said it the best as far as I'm concerned.
