Hi Everybody,

Well, since being new here, you guys have seen a few of my previous builds since I had gotten back into the hobby... Finally, "Thanks!" to Kevin at Missing Link, I am able to start on my dream build of an 1970 AMX. I have wanted to build one for so long it's not even funny. I hope to make this my first contest model, we'll see how it goes...

I am going the "Pro Street" route as I have a buddy from my hometown area that had one and I was always envious of that car, it was beautiful! I'll try to be consistent with updates on the build, but that will depend on my work schedule... So, follow along and enjoy! :(

This is as I received the kit from Missing Link...

Here is a pic of the chassis that I want to use( white one ), It is from the AMT Pro Street Nova ( '66-'67 ). I had already started trimming the chassis pan before taking these pics, so I took one with an additional chassis next to it so you can compare the few differences that are noticeable so far... I think I'll take another pic when it is done.... I am going to have to shorten up the chassis, I just haven't figured out how much yet...

And here is how it is shaping up for now...

OK, That's all I have for the moment, I am laying aside all the various parts and pieces that I have been scrounging up... More pics to come!

Glad to see that AMX back in resin :)

The Big Bad Blue w/shadow mask boxart model is the one I built from it's previous incarnation when available from Motor City Resin.

The Missing Link version is even nicer; you don't have to deal with plating the bumpers.

Have fun with it!

My donor kit is the JoHan "Drag-On Lady" kit of Shirley Shahan. I have had that kit laying around for years just waiting for the right moment to come along and this is it! You can get them up on Ebay... I had been watching the AMX section for a while and there are usually 4-6 of them up there at any one time...

MADmodelDOCTOR, as for an engine I don't think anyone offers it in resin, you'll just have to buy an old kit and scrounge from that...

I have been trying to decide whether or not to use the amc engine or drop in a chevy, I think I will try to use the amc... I'll have to see how the detailing looks on the engine.

I found out today that I am supposed to be done with 6 day work weeks now so hopefully I can get to building on some sort of a regular basis...

Uh....fact check.

American Motors was its own company from 1954 to 1988, when Chrysler bought it.

AMC did, however, purchase TorqueFlite automatic transmissions and some other components from Chrysler during the 1970s and 1980s.

Charlie , you forgot to mention the Ford/ Autolite ignition systems back in the sixties when the A M X was new . They also used both Autolite and Holley Carburators . Even before that Borg Warner built transmission components for both the " Twin Stick " automatics and their manual boxes . I have to tell ya , I used to work on these cars back when they were relitively new . I liked the styling of the A M X , I just never could get the down payment money together . Ed Shaver

You're right, Ed. I need to remember that AMC was the master at parts-box engineering...and they weren't too fussy about whose parts-box they used!

Starting to piece together items for the chassis... I had to shorten the chassis pan some and then also shorten the interior pan so I can get a proper firewall built... I cut off the stock front end from the Nova chassis and am going to use the "strut" front end from the "Pro Street Thunderbird of Matt and Debbie Hays" along with most of the rollcage...

Then my wife show's up with a package for me from an Ebay auction that I had won... Great! It is the '70 AMX conversion kit that I had ordered before I had received my kit from Missing Link, Let's open it up and have a look!

Well!!! Much to my surprise and disgust, I can't really believe my eyes... Who in heavens name would ACTUALLY want to sell a piece of S**T like this??? Is there absolutely "No" integrity or personal pride in craftsmanship anymore?!

This is my first time with a resin kit, so I haven't really been around the block, but c'mon, there is no way I would be willing to sell someone a product that looks like this, especially when they want me to give them feedback?!?! Have a look, enjoy tonight's entertainment!

I'm sure that my camera will not do justice for the pics as you should really see them, I don't have enough pixels...

All I can say is that luckily I only paid $11.00 for the auction( which I could have lost $30.00...) and AGAIN, a big "Thank You!" to Missing Link for putting out a beautiful product!!!

I don't know if you can see it, but the hood is warped and very thin in spots, not to mention the detail around the scoop opening is virtually nil...

The grille is worthless to try and save as is the rear taillight panel... The dash isn't as bad but still sucks!

Sorry for my rant but I am disgusted and amused at the same time! If anyone wants the sellers name to steer clear of let me know!

'Til next time....

  • 10 months later...

Hi Guys!

Sorry for the looonnnngggg disappearance, I had been working on a motorcycle restoration and then work got busy, etc... Anyways, I had not forgotten about this build although I did step into the aviation model world for a couple of months I am now coming back to this arena and while perusing the project as I had left it... I had gotten a real nice '70 AMX body kit from Missing Link and so I'm looking the kit over and it occurs to me that the lower right side rocker panel area is warped... Being that this body is resin and my first kit using a resin body, can anyone tell me a safe way to manipulate this "warpage" or remove it? I was wondering about running it under HOT water for a bit and trying to bring it back to shape? In doing some trial fitting it is really noticeable and will only be moreso once I get a nice shade of candy orange layed down for color.... Thanks for any hints or tips!

Here are a couple of pics of the warpage...

I'll try to get more project updates on here soon... If I can't come up with a way to fix this issue I may have to shelf it until I can figure something out... I really want to finish this but don't want to buy a bunch of aftermarket pieces for it until I know I'm satisfied with the repair...

Thanks again for any help!!! :)

Well, I decided to try running the body under hot water for a bit and then add finger pressure in the opposite direction of the warp... That seemed to help, I did that several times and it seems like it might be "relaxing" into the shape that I desire... I went ahead and started to get along with the build...

I continued with the chassis work, adding the front subframe and side channels to the floorpan. Now to get the body situated where it will reside and measure up my upper subframe pieces for the front struts to mount to...

For those of you that enjoy AMC's, here is a link to a HOT AMX on Youtube...

Here's some update pics...

I found a couple of pics of the car that is my inspiration for this build. I am going to build this as I would want my own to be... The paint color will be a candy orange with a white C-stripe.

The one and only! My friend Jimmy, the cars owner, and I were up at the AMC Nats held there back in I believe... '92 or '93... He has had that car since he was just out of high school, 1983'ish... as far as I know he still has it! :D
