curt raitz Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Found this kit in a LHS...owner had recently picked up a collection of models from a woman who's husband had passed on. Initially I passed right by the kit thinkin' it was the MPC McLaren M8D, I didn't know that MPC had made a kit of the M8B also! It had been started - really rough, tube glue on everything, but all the parts appeared to be present and at $13.00...I could not pass it up took it home and started cleaning it up... Will be getting some McLaren Orange paint from scalefinishes and decals from Indycals Found this receipt in box...love playing with 38 year old plastic: to be continued...
Dragline Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I have an Accurate Miniatures M8B around here somewhere. This looks to be a good kit. I'll be watching the resurrection Curt. Perhaps I'll start the AM version. I heard they are a challenge. This one looks a tad simpler. Get going....... Bob
baddgass Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 ALLWAYS LIKE THIS KIT. HAVE FUN AND LIKE THE RECEIPT TOO, U CAN'T BUY GLUE FOR THAT PRICE NOW!
Draggon Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 That reciept is sure interesting. I bought a model or two there many many moons ago. Terrace Market is still there, but no models. I had one of these but never finished it.If it turns out half as nice as that Bugati it will suer be something!
Peter Lombardo Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Nice catch Curt, I built the "D" version a few years back...actually they are very nice kits. Looks like you will have your hands full just cleaning that one up. I know you are up to the task....but you have to hurry up...with an average of a new completed build every eleven days, you will need to get going here..

This is a very nice kit, I've had one in my collection for quite a few years. The tool was updated many years ago to the M8D which made reissue of this version impossible. You may want to grab a later version M8D for parts (the chassis plate is almost identicle). I'm gonna keep an eye out to see how this turns out. Good luck.
Foxer Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Will be great to see how you do this one. That glass looks like it will be a real job.
curt raitz Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 Will be great to see how you do this one. That glass looks like it will be a real job. The windscreen is toast...will be vacuum forming all the glass for this model making me get off my butt and build a little vacuum form machine I've been wanting to build for years
curt raitz Posted January 21, 2010 Author Posted January 21, 2010 finally got around to playing with this model...along with the Raybestos TransAm Mustang got it cleaned up and started painting and assembly had a few broken and missing parts... replaced the missing/broken wheel lugs with a miniature screw and nut simuliar to the real thing: built a small vacuum form machine and wella...new glass and in scale, also: tires and wheels...from the photos I've seen Bruce ran unpainted centers on his wheels: body cleaned and painted w/Scalefinishes "McLaren Orange" and decals from IndyCals: chassis, front suspension, engine (plumbed & wired) ready to go...just missing rear suspension having to resin cast the drive shafts, only had one good one to work with: kinda gettin' an idea on how things will fit... back to the workbench... thanx for lookin'
Raul_Perez Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Is there any model building challenge that you won't try, my old friend? This is one that I definitely would have given to the elves to conquer... It looks like you'll have this one finished in time for the NNL West, too!! Later,
seeker589 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Outstanding! You sure are doing that bombed car justice! What a wonderful piece of art those cars were! So simple and purposeful. The world needs another unlimited road-race class!
kopperkart Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Amazing save on a fragile kit. I'm glad to see you save this one.
Casey Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Amazing save on a fragile kit. I'm glad to see you save this one. ^^ What he said. I have neither the patience nor desire to restore and rebuild built kits, so I have a great appreciation for those who do. The M8B was my first glue kit ever at the age of eight- talk about being overwhelmed! I think I used half a jar of Pactra silver on the rear wing alone.
935k3 Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Great job so far on a historic classic in racing. I was lucky enough to see this car race in 1969 at Watkins Glen(Thanks Dad). Seeing these cars in person changed my taste in cars for the rest of my life.
curt raitz Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 Amazing save on a fragile kit. I'm glad to see you save this one. Boy, you're not kidding on this kit being fragile...40 year old plastic snaps fairly easily Especially the rear suspension/wing strut assembly
curt raitz Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Moving along, I got a little carried away and attached the rear body work w/o photos of the engine and transaxle The business end of a good CanAm Car... Front body work and doors with vacuum formed glass attached... Almost finished, mirrors need painting, "Reynolds Aluminum" decals for rear wing, etc.
Railfreak78 Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I am amazed at the work you do here and wow. Great car, color and restoration. I'd love to be able to make windows so you have me in awe. Which arm of mine or leg for windows for a 75 Road Runner/Fury 2 door? Seriously, very nice work on a cool racer.
weasel Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 excellent save!!! never in my wildest dreams would i believe that glue bomb could/would be turned into this!!!
curt raitz Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 finished... will make the "Racecar Theme Table" at the NNL West afterall It was fun to rescue this "gluebomb" hope you enjoyed the ride, thanx
Crazy Ed Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Curt, That came out great. I'm glad you did this as I never knew the MPC M8* kits had that much detail. I went and got a M8D to do the Gurney Car because of this build. Again a Great job. Ed
