I bought a bottle of Alclad II chrome and have ordered a rattle can of Tamiya gloss black. Can I use the two together or do I need a different basecoat? Appreciate any assistance.

I've gotten the best results using Alclad's own base coat and highly recommend that you get some. While I've heard of other modelers using Tamiya's gloss black lacquer, I've not tried it myself. Gloss black enamels by Testors/Model Master have yielded good results for me but, again, the Alclad base works perfectly every time.

Where do you guys get the Spaz stiks??? I have the Alcad, it seems to work ok, but I've never seen the spaz stik stuff. Do you guys mail order it? if so, from where??? Thanks.biggrin.gifwink.gif

It doesn't make sense to put lacquer over enamel. The lacquer would eat the enamel.

That's why enamel works under Alclad Chrome, it eats into it and bonds with it. It'll disappear if you use lacquer. The solvents are mild enough not to craze or wrinkle the enamel. They've been making this stuff for like 20 years now, they've got it figured out. Follow the directions to the letter and it'll all come out nice.

I a;ways shoot the Alcad over Testors Black enamel . I thin the black with lacuer thinner. Once i get a nice finish I then shoot testors clear enamel over the black . This gives it a real good shine. I also use the lacquer thinner to thin the clear. Once that is set up I then shoot the Alcad this way has yeilded me some great results. Juts don't have any pictures to show as I don't have the cars anymore. and the pictures I did have i lost when my hard drive died about 6 months ago.

I know it sounds crazy but. The best finish with alclad is when you shoot it over enamel.

I use Krylon indoor/outdoor enamel. Just make sure you spray it so you get a slick shiney surface. then spray the alclad as directed.

Hope this helps..

I remember asking this question not to long ago. That's exactly what I use, and I always have great results. Just make sure you have a nice smooth finish when you shoot the black and you're good to go. Ive never had a problem with it not sticking, but I also try not to touch it to much when Im done.

Thanks for all the replies folks, but now I'm even more confused. Alclad over gloss black enamel; over gloss black lacquer; over grey lacquer primer; clear over Alclad; no clear. Whoa.

I have a rattle can of Testors gloss black enamel; Tamiya gloss black lacquer should be here Tuesday or Wednesday; I have Plasticote grey primer #235.

I guess I'll grab some parts and spray them with each different type of paint and then shoot the Alclad over them. I'll plan on posting the results next week.

Tamiya TS-14 is the only thing I have ever used for the basecoat and it has always turned out fine.

Here is an example. #2 Cab guard/storage box, grille and wheels are done this way.

Jim. It is confusing reading the responses and being that you instinctively know lacquer over enamel is a bad mix.

However, indeed you so need use gloss black enamel as a basecoat.

Here is how I get my best results, for what it's worth. I use Walmart color place gloss black enamel. I like it because it dries fast. I also cover this with a coat of color place clear enamel. Once it's dried, I shoot the Alad.

Another really important tip is that you need to shoot it at 5 or so psi. Also, you shoot it on with mist coats. If you go on too heavy it'll just look silver.

So the key is a gloss black enamel basecoat (alclad, testors, whatever), shot at 5 psi in very light mist coats.

It took me a few times to get the hang of it.
