Dragline Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 (edited) Since I've been in a funk latley with my builds I decided to buy a kit and build it in one month start to finish. Not a lot of extra detail per se. More of a "Can I still have fun doing this" thing. So I picked the AMT 1960 Ford Starliner kit. First off, GOSH what a great kit this is! I'd seen the photo top version from some years ago and thought it was a great car, but after doing some research about it and digging out some old mags I am really loving this design. So, on the first of this month I opened the kit and started in on it. Got the body sanded and ready for primer in a couple of days and layed down some Duplicolor flat white. When I bought it I knew EXACTLY what color I was painting it. Whether it was factory correct or not I was painting it Tamiya Coral. I think it's TS-49? I'd been lusting over the color since I first set eyes on it but since I'm basically a drag car builder it never was appropriate. So here it is after 3 color coats and 2 coats of Testors 1814 clearcaot. I'll buff it out in a few day and get ready for at least 3-4 sessions wiith the BMF. I also have the PE detail set on the way as well. Thought I'd share how I'm getting out of my funk. I picked a car that doesn't have to be exact, and it's sort of out of my comfort zone in an odd sorta way. But it's car model, not sure how out of the zone it could really be at any rate. Hope you dig the color. Bob Edited March 4, 2011 by Dragline
Erik Smith Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I bought a can of that too. Too cool to pass by. I really like the Starliner kit also. A good combination. Will be nice to see a start and finish in one month. I do the same thing all the time - have a couple kits that drag on and then, pop, you find some inspiration and crank out a build. It helps.
ra7c7er Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 The car is a really nice color. Looks good so far.
charlie8575 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Great kit and a pretty color to go with it, Bob. Your work is very good, and I have no doubt this will be, too. Charlie Larkin
JustBill Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Well, their you are. Glad to see you building. Interesting color. Will this be your first victim on display at work? Ohhhh You got boogies on your hood
Dragline Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Yeah, I'm digging the color more and more. There are a few boogies yes. They will not make the trip however. The polish will see them off in fine style. Motor has been 1/2 assembled and wired. I'll throw some more pix up soon. Yeah Bill, this may make it to work. Bob
Dragline Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 Got a little more work done on my Starliner project. This is truly a wonderful kit. One more polishing session and the body is ready for BMF. Interior is coming along as well as the motor. Just some plug wires and maybe a brake line from the master cylinder. Perhaps some battery cables to bring it all to life. Thanks for looking. Bob
Ryan S. Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 This is coming along nicely. I'm really liking that color. This is a fantastic kit for sure. Lot's of extra parts. I've got one I've just barely started on myself.
Chuck Most Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 She looks really fetching in that color! That interior is really going to pop, too. That's a wonderful kit- just look out for some warps in the chassis and floor, and be careful when fitting the front bumper and everything will be fine.
brett Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Nice work Bob, glad to see your making progress on this one.
David G. Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Looking good! I bought one of these too, I really enjoyed building it. The green you're using reminds me of the old International Harvester green. It looks good on that car. David G.
Dragline Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) Been sessioning for 2 nights little by little to get the body polished and the BMF applied. I have about 2/3rds of the BMF done and I must say, WHAT WAS I THINKING??!! The kit is just so nice and other than fainter than I'd like chrome trim, it is getting there. I have the door panels to do now that the off white has dried. I'll hit that with the blue and wait till tommorrow for the BMF seperator strip that runs through the center of the door. I have the distributor wired but it is currently AWOL [i leave things in odd places so I won't mess em up]. It's only a matter of time till I find i t. The chassis itself is done and I'm also getting ready to install the headlight buckets into the PE grill. I had to cut them off the kit supplied grill and sanded em down. It's a pain but the result is going to be worth the effort. This has certainly been a departure from my usual nitro burning drag racers and it has gotten me out of my funk. For that I am grateful to this kit. Enjoy. Bob Edited February 23, 2011 by Dragline
JustBill Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 That thing is Badash BOB! Great work man! Its been worth the wait to see it. BMF is just smooth dude. And yea, the tree guys defiantly had a crowd today
Greg Pugh Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 This is your idea of a quick, less-detailed build? Sheesh!! Looks awfully good!!
maltsr Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Looking good. Can't wait to see it finished. I recently did one in two tone green, but I'm not biased
jeff ewaskey Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Definetly a major switch for a drag race builder but no doubt will be as sweet as your race car builds. Keep it up cuz she is lookin fine!!!!!!
brett Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Ya sure your not coming out of the closet Bob? as a factory stock builder , Sorry man couldnt resist........also why I alternate my builds a bit so as I dont get bogged down and run outta gas at 1000 feet..This is looking so good though ! Keep it up.
Dragline Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 I am now finished with the BMF. Took four days at about an hour a pop. Headliner, windows, PE scripts and this puppy is done. I have a few more items to wrap up on the chassis and then it'll be "Under Glass". Just a few touchups on the panel lines and it'll be to my liking. Bob
