slantasaurus Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Someone needs to explain "burnout" contest to this guy........ http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/corvette-bursts-into-flames/1jrcwynu3?q=Corvette&rel=msn&from=en-us_msnhp&form=msnrll>1=42010
ra7c7er Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I don't know what kind of burnout contest is done on a public road like that. The fire fighters must not have had proper training seriously water on a car fire? water won't do much for an alcohol or fuel burning not to mention oil. To top it all off the burnout wasn't even that good.

I'm not a professional, but I always thought just like it says on a fire extinguisher, you're supposed to aim at the BASE of the flames. Right? All they looked like they were doing was giving it it's last car wash!

Right? All they looked like they were doing was giving it it's last car wash! Yes you are correct. With a car it is a little different though if it is a engine compartment fire you really want to try and coat the whole engine top down is good. Honestly they shouldn't have done anything besides making sure the flames didn't spread to the surrounding grass. Using the wrong equipment can be worse than doing nothing. One of the first things you are taught in training is proper equipment to use. I hope someone sees this and calls them out on it.
von Zipper Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 That's entertainment-Too bad it was'nt a Cheech and Chong car like in the movie Up In Smoke !!
Railfreak78 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 You should watch some of the related videos on that post! The Honda and the U-Haul and the tow truck in the snow are unbelievable!!!!

That is SOP...they are soaking it down...if they had the correct setup they would foam it next....most trucks do not carry ABC or CO2 extinguishers anymore...
george 53 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Well then, the folks who sponsored the event SHOULD have had enough sense to KNOW that water is ineffective on GAS fires. The water FLOATS ON TOP of the gas, and doesn't go out till it runs out of itself! Yeeesh, THAT'S the kinda stuff you learn in FIRST YEAR auto shop.! These fools were just ASKING for trouble! buncha clowns, to bad for the Vette, it WAS a nice lookin car!
chrismooney Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 That is SOP...they are soaking it down...if they had the correct setup they would foam it next....most trucks do not carry ABC or CO2 extinguishers anymore... SOP my rear. LOL..... They have no turnout gear on..... (stupid stupid stupid!) no Air mask....... (Very Stupid!) Water will work fine on all car fires but you have to have the protective clothing on to fight it and know how to apply it. Most likely in this cast the ignition was still on and power to the electric fuel pump was sending raw fuel into the engine compartment. They need to be closer to the car in order to apply the water correctly and having the Turnout gear would enable them to do that... I'm just tankful they didn't get seriously burned or injured by there lack of judgment.
Dragracer Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Yeah, too bad for the vette, but here's another thing, hope it wasn't his only ride home.
von Zipper Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 All kidding aside, along time ago I was street racing on Telegraph Rd. in Detroit against a guy in an early '80 5.0 Mustang, when I looked over at him as he was inching past me, his engine compartment burst into flames- I hit the next turn around and went back. When he opened the hood the fire really took off ! I was on my way home from the store and had (4)--2 liter bottles of Coca-Cola in my car-I cracked the top off and stuck my finger in the bottle and shook it-and sprayed it on the fire-after that guy saw what I was doing, he grabbed a bottle and started doing it too ! It took 3 bottles and made a heck of a mess but his car didn't burn to the ground either-I learned a couple of lessons that day, besides that the soda pop would put out a fire->>that's why that kind of thing should'nt be done on the public streets and put other people in danger.......
gunner Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I think that guy paid his "Stupid Tax" for the year.
ra7c7er Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) Just stupid maybe he will learn or maybe he will take is insurance money and buy another toy he can ruin. Do you think insurance pays in this scenario? Edited February 19, 2011 by ra7c7er
slantasaurus Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Just stupid maybe he will learn or maybe he will take is insurance money and buy another toy he can ruin. Do you think insurance pays in this scenario? Anybody who puts a blower and sidepipes on a Vette probably sent the video to his insurance agent with his claim........so I doubt they will be paying.
slantasaurus Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 It kinda looks like the fuel pump was still pumping fuel the way the fire kept wanting to go after it would die a bit. I know I had my dart flash fire up the firewall when I blew the transmission up on the way to the track. (I drive it everywhere!) That was the first thing I did when it caught fire was kill the fuel! You'd be surprised how many times people run out of the car and leave it running or at least the pumps on in a race car. I seen it a lot! Paul That's why drag cars have an electrical kill switch on the rear of the car.
parki Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) Wot a dumb ass, putting water on a fuel fire. I meen can peaple really be that thick? Edited February 19, 2011 by parki
ra7c7er Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 (edited) The proper way to hold a contest and to put out a burnout engine fire. The fire department is at the ready and they know how to use their hoses Oh yeah and the driver was smart enough to shut the car off. What a burnout fire should be. Yeah, but it's more fun to watch a Chevy burn.
