Mooneyzs Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Brad... this stuff is great to work with, cuts easy with scissors or a knife. You know from the pics I couldn't see any more bead rolls but I was thinking of adding some on the front part of it to make it have a little more. Here is the pic I have of that panel and I can't see any more beads that what I put on there. on the bottom there is a bottom panel that goes over the sides: Â Â Â Â Darryl... thanks man I had to practice the bead rolls with a few different objects to see what created them the best. 1320wayne Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Amazing work Chris. That printers aluminum is super to work with. I used to have a kings ransom supply when I lived out in Oregon as a fellow club member worked for a screen printer and would bring us all we needed. I fear now that one day I will run out and have to find a new source.
Mooneyzs Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Thanks for the kind words Wayne. I have to agree that this printers aluminum is awesome to work with. Hopefully you won't run out for a while. Â Â I did a little more work on this and started to make the floor bottom of the driver area. I started out by making a template out of a 3x5 card and then transfered the template to the printing plate, cut it out and then bent it to shape. I still have more work to do on it and am thinking how I am going to change it upHere is more progress pics.... Â Â Here is the template that I made on the right and the part I made on the left: Â Â Â Â Â stuck the part in the frame to see how it fit: Â Â Â Â Â Added the side panels to see how it all looked together, I still have to drill holes in the sides of the bottom piece for the fasteners: Â Â Â Â Â Shot of the driver area, although I am thinking of changing it up a little bit and the area the drive line comes thru I am going to cut away and make out of 1 or 2 pieces have totally decided yet: Â Â Â Â Â The other side, Also need to drill holes in the bottom piece for the fasteners: Â Edited July 23, 2017 by Mooneyzs
W-409 Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Great job with it! Those side panels look very good. That driver's floor looks very good too. How did you do those bendings (?) to the side panels? They look very good. This will be amazing when finished, actually it's amazing already...
Pro Tech Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Chris, WOW , the panels look great. Great job on the beading!!! Just one question, was your hand sweating the least little bit when you started to apply that bead??? hahaha  Look forward to more!!! Charlie Pro Tech
Nitrozilla Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Chris, WOW , the panels look great. Great job on the beading!!! Just one question, was your hand sweating the least little bit when you started to apply that bead??? hahaha  Look forward to more!!! Charlie Pro Tech Charlie, surgeons do their best work under pressure. Chris is the type of surgeon who laffs at pressure when he says, "Ha Ha Mr. Pressure, I laff at you." That's not an exact quote, but it suits my purposes......... Keep up the good stuff Chris
Mooneyzs Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Good Moring Fellas.... Niko... Thanks man... Those bends were done with a Tamiya Poto-Etch bending pliers. I will get a pic of the pliers to show you. One day I was at one of the local hobby shops I go to and happened to see them. I had to get them and give them a try. They work great and would recommend to anyone. Charlie... Thanks Bud!!... yeah I was a little nervous when I did start to apply the bead at first. I made one sample and wasn't as happy as I could have been with it. so I started over. then on my next set i just went slow with the bead using a little lighter pressure and running over it a few more times than I did previously. Its really not that hard but what I did find was it just depends on the substrate you put under the metal when you form it. Joe... LOL.. there is alway a little pressure. if I don't make it right the first time, I end up redoing the part.... sometimes 2 or 3 time....
eviltwincustoms Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Looks pretty darn snazzy to me from here. Now will the bottom seat plate be going under your side panels for the finished look? So Chris what did you end up going with for that bottom substrate to get your end result? You are holding out on us!
tyrone Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 They look awesome Chris, keep the updates coming...
gasser59 Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 This is really progressing nicely and it looks like your learning curve has been met with working on this printing plate. Stellar work my friend. In studying the actual 1:1 car picture above, it looks like there is a separate piece of side panel that goes on the frame under where the headers are. It is a slightly different color. That may be the reason there's no bead rolling towards the front. Maybe you've already noticed this but decided to do the side panels as a one piece?
Mooneyzs Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Bart.... Thanks man.... and to answer your question on the bottom plate it will actually go over like you see in my pics. If you take a look at the fist pic on this page its how it is on the real car for the finished look. The substrate was a harder black rubber. I will post a pic. Thanks Tyrone.... Got some updates in a sec once the pics finish uploading on Photobucket... Brad.... Thanks Brad, I am learind that the printing plate is really easy to work with. Thanks again for some of it. Yea you are correct on the pic of the 1:1 for that panel piece under the headers. I have looked at that trying to figure out what they did. I can't tell if that piece is a seperate piece or if there is a slight bend in it and from what I can see there is only 1 Dzus fastener in that plate. So I keep going back and forth if I should cut that front piece of and make a 2 Piece panel. what to to what to do.
Mooneyzs Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) So I have made a little more progress this afternoon... Â Niko... here is the Photo-Etch bending pliers from Tamiya that I use to bend thin metal and photo-etch parts: Â Â Â Â Â Here is a sample piece that I bent: Â Â Â Â Here it is after taking of the pliers...sorry that the pic didn't turn out well. camera focused on wrong area: Â Â Â Â Here is a pic of the substrate I had put the Printing plate on to do the bead rolls on, Its just a hard rubber not sure what the Durometer is of the material but i want to go back to Lowes and pic up some more. this is a small piece which I have cut from that I use for sanding blocks too: Â Edited July 23, 2017 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Ok so here are the actual updates on the car.... Â I decided to redo the fuel hold down strap since I wasn't happy with the original one It, it was off somehow. So I started by drawing the pattern out on the printing plate and started cutting: Â Â Â Â Â Once I finished cutting out and bending took a pic of it on the fuel tank with old one next to it: Â Â Â Â Â Got the holes drilled in the Bottom Plate of the Driver area: Â Â Â Â Now time to get back to the build and work on the master cylinder mounting bracket and then not sure... maybe motor mount tabs, guess I will see what calls my name to work on next.... lol Thanks for looking Edited July 23, 2017 by Mooneyzs
Uncle Keith Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 NICE work on the tins! The bead rolling looks great! Dzus fasteners?!?! Are you kidding me?!?! AWESOME!!! Are ya' gonna' dimple the holes so the dzus buttons will lay flush to the panel? And are ya' gonna' roll the top edge of the side panels over the top frame rail, like in the 1:1 pic? I think I'll just go now! I've probably created more work/headaches for ya'. My apologies! Have A Great Day! Hope To Talk To Ya' Soon!

Hey Chris in this picture it appears to have a Bead along the bottom just above the two bottom fasteners. I dont think its a shadow, maybe a closer look on that detail
Mooneyzs Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 (edited) Hey Keith... Thanks man!! You know I never thought about dimpling the holes so the Dzus fasteners will sit flush. I may have to try it on a sample piece. I probably won't roll the top piece of the tins over the frame like the 1:1. I made the Tins stop a little short of the top of the tube. Not sure if that makes sense but I didn't want the tins to sit higher so I decided to have them sit a little lower. Â Gabriel.... I believe what you are seeing is where the bottom section of the tins that wraps around the side. I took the photo and changed the contrast and balance so it can be seen a little better.... Â Â Â Â Â I did a little more tonight and started working on the Master Cylinder for the brakes. looked at some different pics that I had and decided to scrap the kits master cylinder and scratch build my own, along with a mounting bracket that it will attach too. Â Here is the kit master cylinder and cover on the top and the bracket, master cylinder and top that I scratch built: Â Â Â Â Â Here I stuck the top onto the master cylinder and I will be using RB Motion rod end links that will attach to the brake lever as well as some Scale Hardware T2M simulated slotted screws for the top: Â Edited July 23, 2017 by Mooneyzs
futurattraction Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Amazing detail work, Chris. I love it!
bobthehobbyguy Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 (edited) Very nice. As they say treat every piece of a model as a model it self. The master cylinder is a work of art. Keep up the good work. I am curious are you going to polish the aluminum panels or paint them? bobthehobbyguy Edited October 24, 2011 by bobthehobbyguy
W-409 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Ooh, thanks for the pics. I have to get those...
gasser59 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Chris, where did you pick up the Tamiya pliers or did you order it?
eviltwincustoms Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Chris, where did you pick up the Tamiya pliers or did you order it? You can get them at Hobby Lobby or your local Hobby store.... or even Micro-Mark has them in stock! Chris I do have a question for you... I have never used Printing Plate, but does it have the same properties and the thin TIN plate that you can get at the Hobby stores?

I have never used Printing Plate, but does it have the same properties and the thin TIN plate that you can get at the Hobby stores? Thanks Bart for the info on the Tamiya pliers. The printing plate he's using is about half the thickness of the home centers' stuff. There are different thicknesses of printing plate all depending on the size of the plate and printing press its used on.
speedy5963 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Hey Chris, I hadn't followed this for a while, and wow!!!!! :D Between being out at the races this weekend and looking at this, I'm going to have to cut back on the pool shooting and pick up the glue again. This is really coming along bud! Keep firing away bud!
Mooneyzs Posted October 25, 2011 Author Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) Scott....Thanks man Bob... Thanks man. you are right about treating each little piece as a model of its own. I am excited about this master cylinder, its turning out better than I thought. As far as the Aluminum panels, I am planning on painting them like the pictures. Niko.... you are welcome.... they are worth their money. Brad.... I picked them up from Hobby Depot in Tempe. They were about $20.00 Bart.... As Brad mentioned it is a little bit thinner than the tin plate. It is really easy to work with too and bends nicely as well. Paul... Hey Buddy Great to see you back here again. Sounds like you had a blast at Bakersfield. Yeah man you need pick that glue up and start building again... thanks for the compliments. I will have to bring this project up when I come home over Thanksgiving and Christmas to show you and your dad. Edited October 25, 2011 by Mooneyzs
speedy5963 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, we'll have to hang out some and have you give me some pointers on the detail bud!
