Space Cowboy Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 (edited) I hope to take an old 55 Nomad and changing it into a 55 Pontiac Safari... More coming soon................... Edited May 8, 2011 by Space Cowboy
Greg Pugh Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 You've got your work cut out for you. Are you sure there isn't a resin one available?
RodneyBad Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Looks to be a Sweet build. I'm not much help but I'll Be watching
David@MinidreamsInc. Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 For a head start look at Modelhaus or R&R for bumpers the rest should be just plastic and sanding !
W-409 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 This is very interesting project, that Pontiac Safari is very nice car. I have never seen one in 1/25 scale. Can't wait to see how this one will turn out.
MrObsessive Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Modelhaus does make a resin kit, but it is PRICEY!! If I can make one suggestion when you start...........make sure you lengthen the front fenders. Not to be overly harsh, but every time I see someone convert a '55-'57 Chevy to a Pontiac, the front fenders are never long enough. Might not make much difference in scale, but if you're going all the way with a lot of body work-------may as well do the fenders too. Pontiacs had a bit more real estate between the trailing edge of the wheelwell and the leading edge of the front door, due to their longer wheelbase.
Greg Pugh Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Bruce, wasn't it you that did that '57 Chevy to '57 Pontiac conversion a year or two ago?
Space Cowboy Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Bruce, wasn't it you that did that '57 Chevy to '57 Pontiac conversion a year or two ago? Yes I did here is the link.... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=41121
Custom Hearse Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Awesome Bruce! The '57 Chevy to '57 Pontiac is nicely done, so I have faith that this one will be extraordinary!
Craig Irwin Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 I have a Jo-Han 56 Pontiac 4 door body without a roof and trunk you can have if it will help you.
Space Cowboy Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 I had to add 7 scale inches to the frame. The Chevy is 115" and the Pontiac is 122" I also have the engine almost done.......... More coming soon.............................
Risto Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 You're off to a good start! Found this while searching for items from the Modelhaus: check out the grille at the bottom of this pic! This might come handy at some point.
disabled modeler Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 (edited) Reminds me I need to get some bumpers/grille for my 55 Pontiac Star Chief by Johan, only problem is now you have me wanting to do that too Edited April 7, 2011 by disabled modeler
Space Cowboy Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 I got the 7 scale inches added to the body.................... Hope to start on the body soon................
Custom Hearse Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Cool! I like what you've done so far and I can't wait to see more!
SoCalCarCulture Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Curious why you added the length to the back? The real Safaris and Nomads were identical in the roof/rear/glass - the Pontiac gained the length in the front fenders! FYI - All American did produce a '55 Safari in Resin when they were still in business - here's pics of mine...
Danno Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Curious why you added the length to the back? The real Safaris and Nomads were identical in the roof/rear/glass - the Pontiac gained the length in the front fenders! Correct. There's an obvious flaw in the build already ... too bad to put that much work into something that far off. Front end looks too short and the rear quarters and roof look too long. Unless it's going to be some kind of custom. I'll shut up and watch.

I will add to the front not the back..Thanks for the input it helps a lot.............. Glad you took it constructively, as it was intended. Some people can't handle any kind or degree of reality, but obviously you're up for it. You do a lot of very innovative builds and conversions; just didn't want to see this one end up unbalanced or odd-looking if you were pursuing a stock or nearly stock build. I really will be watching with interest, as I love these older Pontiacs. I'm not as ambitious as you ... I won't be converting one and not likely to spend the $$$ on a vintage AAM or ~ even better, the real benchmark of resin Ponchos, Shawn Carpenter. Carry on with best wishes!
Space Cowboy Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Hey guys I got the change done. I removed the inches from the rear and added it to the front. Also started more body work........ More coming soon....
charlie8575 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Wow, what a job, Bruce! If anyone can do this, it's you. Charlie Larkin
horsepower Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 It would be much easier to use the JoHan '56 Pontiac for the main body,& either the AMT, or Revell Nomads for the roof,& the Revell chassis with the 'vert crossmember. That's the way I'm going on the one I'm building.
Space Cowboy Posted April 15, 2011 Author Posted April 15, 2011 Got a lot of body work done....................... Hope to have some primer on it soon.....................
