So I went to the mailbox today ~ and lo and behold ~ looky what was inside!!

My brand new issue (#158 - "April") of Model Cars Magazine!

WHOA! And, BOY HOWDY! That was KILLER FAST!

You see, this is a free subscription that Gregg and MCM donated to Desert Scale Classic (April 16) as a promotional contribution. I won it, and mailed in the award on April 18. THREE WEEKS later, to the day, and here is the first mag ... already at my doorstep and its not even been a month! WOW!

And, it's another great issue!! Cool stuff ~ including a great retrospective of Hubley kits, Lower Left Coast NNL coverage, a Lakester buildup, a diecast tractor buildup, a Ken Kitchen antique truck buildup, a Dennis Doty article and a Tim Boyd article, Tim Ahlborn's usual great column, a bunch of kit reviews, and some Hudson design ideas from Jairus' drawing board! Wow! And, Jim Keeler weighed in with a tribute to the late George Toteff.

Did I say WoW!?!!!

Thanks, Gregg and Golden Bell Press and the MCM crew for another great issue and ... for your unfailing and generous support of the hobby in general and Desert Scale Classic in particular.

Thanks, Guys.

The big hug goes out to Harry though.

He is the one who has been pushing me, and everyone here, to get the mag out on time.

I really can't thank you enough, Harry.

Thank you for your patience, trust, support, help, belief in me, and, oh crud, I'm going to cry.....

That's great! Especially when it's free! I'm excited as I just got issue 157 in the mail today. Great contest issue. :)

I don't mean to sound like a rube, but when did the contest issue hit the stands?? I've been waiting for it at my LHS, and the website still has a previous issue featured. Now Dan is saying that he got the issue AFTER the contest issue. I'm a little confused here.

Aaron,

The contest issue was # 157 Feb/March; I bought it about a month ago at Hobby Bench on Bell Road.

I just received # 158 April on Monday (start of subscription).

Next one should be # 159 May/June.

Their website hasn't been updated for some time; it shows issue # 151.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys. Dan, I went to the Hobby Bench this evening, and they said they won't be carrying it anymore. That pretty much screws anyone in the valley who doesn't have a subscription. My only hope is that it'll be available through the MCM website as a back issue.

Your problems would be solved if you would subscribe.

And a subscription costs LESS per issue than buying it one at a time at a hobby shop... :D

Thanks Rob. I appreciate the info.

And, the Hobbytown USA in Gilbert carries it.

Wonder why Andy doesn't.

While I agree with the O.P. on most what he said... I found Chuck Doan's "Diecast Do-over" Fordson tractor weathering article to be the most interesting.

Fantastic processes and looks so real to me that I had to convince myself that I was looking at a little model! The work done to that toy is nothing short of miraculous incorporating scratch-building, stripping and a ton of weathering. I have read the article twice and think I am ready to do a tractor myself! Very impressive Chuck!

Jairus, you are right, Chuck is one of those builder up high in the pantheon whose work is always jaw-dropping, eye-popping, AND very inspirational.

I think MCM is going fabulous work because the articles, the builders, the subject matter stays fresh, cutting edge, and more importantly VARIED.

It's the only magazine really that is brave enough to do articles on things like RAT RODS, Post Apocalypse Builds, Farming and Heavy Equipment, etc . . .

Keep up the great work, Harry and Gregg!

I concur, Jairus and Crank. I just hadn't gotten into that article yet when I posted the original. The more I look at that tractor, the more I respect it, too.

It is definitely outstanding in its field!

You guys sure know how to make a person feel bad - still no #158 here. In the morning I'm going to wear my MCM T-shirt. Maybe that will spur delivery.

Sounds like it's just you & me without #158, Lee. But, not to worry - it's almost Friday night so it's the pool, pizza, popcorn, and WWE Smackdown. Oh yeah!!! B)

I am set to head out on the road for a few days and while it would have been nice to have something new to read, #158 is not here yet.

It has always amazed me at the hit and miss pattern of the USPO in the way they deliver mail. How can someone get their magazine a week(or more) before others if they are mailed at the same time?

Posted (edited)

It's still a projected 2 days before my copy arrives based on previous agony. Monday I'm gonna wear my MCM printed pants down for the mail, made using Eelco's technique in his Mexican Blanket post!
