highway Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Ugh...I hate it when "are" is always used in place of "is". It just sounds wrong. Like if you have a group name or whatever, it doesn't sound right to say "are"... You might not like it, but using "are" is the proper usage for groups. "IS" is for singular usage and "ARE" is for plural usage. Examples: Harry is going to the model show. Andy is not going to the model show. Matt, Bill, and Chip are waiting for the new Moebius Great Dane trailer to be released. Andy and James are not going to go to the hobby shop tomorrow. See, a grammar lesson and I still even kept it model related!!

Like, "ZZ Top are playing" It just doesn't sound right..
timc Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Harry, straight A's doesn't mean that I made 100's on everything.Cut me some slack will ya? I graduated over twenty years ago. Well anyway, it was more legible than the other guys post. A-P-P-A-L-A-C-H-I-A-N Did I get it correct? Tomatoe-Potatoe and around here they are referred to as maters and taters. Just funnin' ya Harry.bigtim
timc Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Yeah, I know that's right, but if it's like a music group then it doesn't sound right. Like, "ZZ Top are playing" It just doesn't sound right.. No, now pay attention. Are is for plurals,Is is for singular people, and Am is for yourself. ZZ Top is not plural, ZZ top is one band, made up of three people, but they are still just one singular band. So to say,ZZ Top is playing on the radio while you build models. Would be correct. Had to keep it model related.I'll probably get busted again, bigtim.
Harry P. Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Big Tim is correct! ZZTop is playing on the radio while you are listening to them. Wow... all this schoolwork on a weekend? This blows!

MachinistMark Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 this, is hilarious. What? a 13 year old that doesn't know everything?! what is the world coming to?!
Chief Joseph Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Mr. Cheap, I'm sorry that your posts are ridiculed. I understood what you were trying to say. I've also learned a lot by reading the airbrush artists' forums.
timc Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 I know what I meant, don't think you will only confuse yourself.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 (edited) this, is hilarious. What? a 13 year old that doesn't know everything?! what is the world coming to?! Whodathunkit? I mean seriously, what's with all the hate on me lately? I personally don't give a rat's butt, but I'd like to know why.. Edited December 4, 2011 by Andy C.

I've also learned a lot by reading the airbrush artists' forums. Thank you, someone with maturity. I read over the post, and I would have to say it honestly make me want to leave. Childish behavior of making fun of someone's post. Then to carry it on to 50+ post without being locked. When I've seen topics less important locked over nothing.

I wouldn't complement him on his maturity level yet, Joshua. Did you happen to read the second line in his signature?? I wouldn't say that someone who uses that type of inappropriate language on a public forum AND knowing there are members here under 18 years of age is very mature! Great phrase for a bar, not for here.
Swifster Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Ghastly. No real man would ever put beer into a fridge, what? Lucas refridgerator?

For example, "The BBC have decided to forgo the annual Christmas broadcast," or "EMI have dropped ZZ Top from their list of artists."

Harry P. Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 (For the people that think I'm a know it all, look closely. I didn't know that collective nouns use plural verbs in the UK.) Now that's funny!
SuperStockAndy Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Now that's funny! What's so funny about that? The past couple days I've been getting that a lot.
Terry Sumner Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 My favorite assault on grammar is the word. "seen". As in, "Yeah I seen one of those cars yesterday".
sjordan2 Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Sorry about the digression. Wasn't this thread about whether or not we could talk about refrigerator topics at scaleautomag.com? (For larger refrigerators, see scalemotorcars.com.)

martinfan5 Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 OMG this has become a train wreck, I am going to get some popcorn
Junkman Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 This is where Christian comes in. In the UK, collective nouns use plural verbs. For example, "The BBC have decided to forgo the annual Christmas broadcast," Now that would leave us in a right karfuffle, would it not. However, there is a newfangeld fad in British English which already made it into the print media. I haven't seen it in American texts yet, but it has become annoyingly prevalent over here. They use the wrong grammatical person, i.e. gender. It goes like this: The girl went to the shop. She bought... Lucas refridgerator? No, we keep our beer in the pub.
