This was a Revell street machine kit from the late 80's, moulded in candy pink.

I chose to go the weathered route as a slight departure from my usual shiny finishes. It made a nice change.

Some detail was missing in the execution of the moulding, so I added door hinges, wiper blades, additional louvres on the engine cover and I re-scribed all of the panel lines as they were vague.

The Fuchs rims were in the kit. The tyres are parts-box. I made the decals and replaced the kit glass with smoked acetate. The aloha garland is made from tissue paper and thread. The door mirror was made with my little watchmaker's lathe.

The roof rack is made from brass rod, silver soldered. The stinger pipe is made from plumber's solder and a paintbrush ferrule. I used a little bit of photoetch on the engine pulley faces and made the distributor from alu tube. Surfboard is styrene sheet with clear red sprue cut and filed into fins. Bungees were made from detail wire and fuse wire.

Er... that's about it. Any questions, please ask. Here are the finished pics:

That really looks the business, Guy; Beyond the weathering, I really like the bungees and the headlight 'eyebrows.' Nice work on the rack as well.

Here's a shot of the other side of the board:

Although nobody will see it, now it's fixed to the rack and inside a display case...oh well. I enjoyed making it!

Guy this thing came out perfect. This is probably the coolest beetle I have seen built. You really nailed the stance...those back wheels have to be cambered out like they are and the fronts have to be tucked in and straight. Everything about it is cool, but I really like those bungee's and the brass roof rack. Have any shots of the engine...I know its just a little boring air cooled, but I would like to see it. Awesome job and thanks for finishing it up fast so we could all enjoy it.

Guy can you explain to me how you made the exhaust stinger? You said plumbers solder and a paint brush ferrule. I have an idea, but I'm not sure. If you have pics of this process, I would love to see them. Thank you and from a former surf rat who loved beetles, your car is amazing.

Sorry, no step-by-step pics of the exhaust, but I'll try and describe my method.

I took a short length of solder and bent it to a tight 'U' around a needle file handle, then trimmed it to size. I filed a taper into the end that would fit into the ferrule.

The ferrule was from a knackered paintbrush. I cut it down to the right length and epoxied it onto the tapered end of the solder. I filed the other end of the solder to make it rounded and epoxied that to the existing part of the kit exhaust.

The inside if the cone was given some matt black and the curved part of the solder was given orange and blue clear washes for heat staining.

I hope that helps..!
