RancheroSteve Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Starting a new one. From a very simple R&R resin kit. I'm replacing the supplied vacu-formed bubble top (because it has some unsightly wrinkles) with a Plastruct dome. I think the toughest part of this build is going to be the paint and decals (none are supplied).
Ira Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Love this Design! Looking forward to seeing the progress on this one...
philo426 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Did you hear how the bearing dried out causing the fan to snap off and hit a member of the audience?Luckily the person survived and did not sue Roth!Wouldn't happen like that in today's litigious society!
Casey Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Did you hear how the bearing dried out causing the fan to snap off and hit a member of the audience?Luckily the person survived and did not sue Roth!Wouldn't happen like that in today's litigious society! Yeah, that's kind of why this has always been one of Roth's bittersweet creations I think. It's an interesting concept and the competition with Barris was probably great for the shows, but I don't think either man's forte was engineering. Ahyhoo, keep us updated on this build. I'm looking forward to seeing it progress. IIRC, this car had two paint schemes, but I think the first was more true to the original concept and the second more of a show repaint.
Ryan S. Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 What a weird little vehical. I've never seen this before. Cool to see something so different!
RancheroSteve Posted July 16, 2013 Author Posted July 16, 2013 It's been a while, but progress has been made! I'm actually pretty close to finishing. Here's a teaser - a few shots of the Roth figure that will be sitting at the controls: The shirt pattern was made by scanning the Rod & Custom cover that the Rotar appeared on and printing it on clear decal paper. I should have the rest of it done in a couple of weeks, if I can find some time spend at the work bench.
cobraman Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Very cool project. May I suggest spraying your well painted figure with some dullcote to kill the shine ? Just a suggestion.
RancheroSteve Posted July 16, 2013 Author Posted July 16, 2013 Thanks Ray - I'd already planned to dull him up a bit more. Testors DullCote doesn't seem as dull as it once was - anybody else noticed that?
RancheroSteve Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Some more progress - the chassis (such as it is) is done. Wheels and Big Daddy's feet trimmed for clearance (the body's a scale foot thick). Just need to drop the body on and finish up a few little details. This is obviously not going to be a "full detail" build (ha ha), but I think it will display well.
Ron Hamilton Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Wow!!!! This one takes me back a few years. A good friend of mine, Jim Bean did the master for this one. He is deceased, but he was one of the best modelers I have ever met. Give him some sheet plastic, putty, glue some files and knives, and he could come up with some interesting stuff. Around the time that Jim was mastering the Rotar, I also got to meet "Big Daddy" at our local Rod and Custom Show. I know you will do this build justice, as your other ones.
RancheroSteve Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Thanks, Ron - I'd be interested to hear more about the history of this kit, if there's anything else you know. Just got the body glued to the chassis - not much more to do.
RancheroSteve Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 A couple of teaser shots - just a few more things to do.
