bbowser Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 (edited) Got some color on the body last night and today. The Tamiya went on real well and I let dry overnight. Today the tedious job of masking and laying on the white. I'm pretty happy with it so far. I'll bake it overnight in the dehydrator and be ready for the final red stripe. The pics show the yellow a little lighter than acual color. It's pretty close to the reference pictures I have. Edited March 4, 2012 by bbowser
Chris guthro Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 very nice! the chassis and engine detail is amazing!
bbowser Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 Thanks Chris, but I've added nothing but paint. All the detail is in the kit parts.
Kmidd65 Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Hey Bruce, this is looking very nice! I believe those colors are going to tie in real well with the decals when it is all together. Nice and clean, she will be a looker when you wrap it up! Keep it coming, I am enjoying your ingenuity and craftsmanship on this build.
bbowser Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 More progress. More tedious masking and shot the red stripe, baked overnight in the dehydrator. I'm pretty pleased with it. Normally I get at least one or two boo-boos where paint seeps under the masking and needs touch-up, but this one is looking good. I must be holding my mouth right Hope to start decaling tomorrow during the Nationwide race. Thanks for looking!
Lanny Haas Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 This is looking good, Great job on the paint to...I know you have the wheels finished, but here is a tip that I do to give them some realizem. http://public.fotki.com/lannyhaas/how-tos/wheel_detail/
bbowser Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 Great tip Lanny, thanks! I'll have to try that on the next one.
bbowser Posted March 20, 2012 Author Posted March 20, 2012 So I sit down last night to start the decals. I have to be in the right frame of mind for decals as they can be tough, and of course they're the most obvious thing to catch the eye on the finished build. I was going to start with the thin red stripe down the side that separates the white and yellow, but I'm looking at the sheet and the stripes are too narrow and have both red and yellow? Upon further investigation the 'Holly Farms' logos for the quarters are red instead of white! I've got the WRONG sheet! These are for the earlier car that was all white. This is the car I'm doing: I go online and at Mikes Decals he has 1 sheet left of Powerslides that seem to be the correct sheet, so I ordered that ($6, great deal). So in 2 to 5 days I'll be able to proceed. I'm bummed but whataya gonna do? I can live with details underneath being incorrect as few will see them anyway, but the body has got to be right! Hopefully more to come soon.
The70judgeman Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I don't know the brand name of the decals, but they look very similar to some that I've used in the past. BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU USE A DECAL SET! Was working on a project, decaling, and I'd apply a decal, dry it, and put on some decal set. Go on to another place for a decal and came back to a decal that was all eaten and totally messed up. So far it's only been that brand of after-market decals. I'd apply all of your decals and after they've dried...seal them with whatever clear you're going to use. You've come along too far with an excellent build to have the decals get all messed up.
Dave Van Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Looks good so far. It is correct that this car/kit should have coil springs and trailing arms. The type of trailing arms differed by chassis maker or car builder/driver. The long GM truck arms were legal by 76 but a number still used short arms like a Monte Carlo street car would have. But this kit is based off the 1971 MPC kit which was never really fully updated so leaf springs stayed in the kit even when real cars had moved on. But Model King paid $$$ to just get the kit usable the cost to fully correct it would have made it impossible. The CHEAP AMT 90's era stock car kits are the best source for more correct rear suspension. And it is correct leaf springs were still around on the Mopar cars. The leafs were adjustable at the shackles but not easy during a race! The seat is incorrect because MPC cloned the seat for the CannonBall Chevy kit to make it a two seater like in the movie and when RC2 removed one seat they picked the wrong one!!! Still very grateful Model King reissued these kits and allowed me to help out on them.
bbowser Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 They came today! Many thanks to Mikes Decals, great service and great prices. I think I can combine both sheets and have just what I need. Now I just have to get in the mood again.
krazyglu Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Bruce this is a really cool build. i also love the color and decal scheme on this car. Your paint work looks great. I ordered decals from Mikes a month or so ago and was pleased with the service.
MarkJ Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Bruce, Awesome build. Fantastic job on masking the paint. Cant wait to see it finished.
bbowser Posted April 3, 2012 Author Posted April 3, 2012 A little bit of progress. Foiled the windows and started on the decals. I'm a little disappointed that the side stripe bled through the #11's a little. More to come.
jjsipes Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Any updates? Have been following this. Looks great.
CorvairJim Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Would it be possible to put the number decals from the first set over the ones already on the car to help hide the stripe bleed-through? Check if they're the same size. If both decal manufacturers were working to the same scale, they might line up right...
bbowser Posted April 29, 2012 Author Posted April 29, 2012 Good thought Jim, I'll give it a look. A little more progress, things have been hectic around here and I've got 2 other projects on the bench. Got her up on the wheels.... Got the stance set pretty well, now all she needs is the engine room finished up and some interior do-dads. Thanks for looking!
bbowser Posted May 8, 2012 Author Posted May 8, 2012 It's getting close. Trying to finish it off tonight, we'll see if the god's are smiling. Thanks for following along...
Ken#5fan Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Nicely done!!!!! Will use your build as reference if you don't mind when I build Cale's all white version.
majel Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Great looking build Bruce! Did you heat wrap the headers or did they come with that texture already on them? If you did wrap them what did you use? Once again great looking model of a classic NASCAR.
Kmidd65 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Looking very nice, Bruce. Glad to see it is back in progress! BTW, nice paint detailing on those AMT wrapped headers. I have pondered what to do with those, sand them smooth or try to highlight them in some manner. Yours look great!
bbowser Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) I'm calling it done. Could have added a few more contingency decals but I like the cleaner look, like it's fresh out of the shop. I'll be posting some more in the NASCAR section. majel, that's the way the headers came, I just painted the wrap with a flat tan. I want to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement during this build. Ken, I'm flattered. If you try the 'back-halved' chassis make SURE your cuts are square! I could have saved myself a lot of trouble on this one. Edited May 10, 2012 by bbowser
