I have modelers ADD, I can never stay focused on a project from start to finish. It isn't that the subject isn't interesting to me anymore but when I see someone build something really cool or even run accross something while doing other research sometimes it consumes me. I have a basement room full of partially built kits that one day I swear I'll get back to, and I do, but I never seem to take them to completion because something new comes by and draws me away. I could probably have a third of my stash built if I could stay working on the same kits for any length of time. How do you handle the temptation to stray to other builds, do we need a support group?

Have you been in my basement? Same problem although I am actually pulling stuff out. I've done soem nice work on an AMT Mustang II body that has sat untouched for fifteen years. I can actually see progress on it.

Join the club! I have probably over 100 projects started, some barely, others almost finished.

I think one of the best observations I've seen on this forum is to treat each separate component as a kit of its own. Make something special out of each one. After all, different work groups at the manufacturing plant do it that way.

Do the engine to any level of detail.

Do the chassis.

Do the interior.

Make the dashboard a work of art.

Take extra care with the wheels

And, of course the body.

That's a few models right there. Don't let the big picture overwhelm you, take it one submodel at a time.

We have any number of builders on this forum who look at it that way.

Sometimes I suffer from spending too much time on a build, not wanting to not get it finished. This sometimes does interfere with more important things in life It's kinda like job, family stuff, domestic duties, and other social events get in way of hobby. No builds here that do not get finished. It's like a personal challenge or another strange mental disorder.

Yeah really! I suffer the same thing,eSPCIALLY durng the Spring and Summer months where a lifetime passion of cycling eclipses almost everthing else,LOL! Problem for me is,as time goes by and I don't finish something,it pushes me further and further from the "mood to build" until (like I sit currently) I just haven't built inso long it's lik a new hobby again,LOL!

I got all kinds of half started abortions laying around. I am afraid to even count them up but I am sure it's double what's been finished.

I actually haven't worked on anything in a year. I have gone months without even opening the door to the hobby room. I have been busy with 1:1 cars, my Porsche, RC helicopters, building a resin casting station, just got a new Photo Etching set up, giving that a try again, was building stick & tissue planes for a while. Plus a jillion other things going on.

I always say I am not going to start something new until I finish at least on started kit up and well that hasn't gone well... at all. I either don't get anything done or end up starting something new anyway.

I've learned and limit myself to 3 builds at a time. I used to do the chassis/interior and be done way before the body, then rush the body to finish to the detriment of the project. Now I start on the body first and only when it's near ready for paint do I start on the other bits. Works for me, but like mentioned above, if you're happy with 100 projects going then by all means. IT'S A HOBBY!

That is the way I figure it. What ever happens or doesn't happen in the hobby shop is all good.

I'm the same way; I've got many 20+ year old projects laying about in addition to the newer ones. I tend to do a lot of customizing/body work, and when it gets close to what I expect (or not) and looking good in primer, I move on to the next. I tend to look at them more as recognition models than finished projects.

Recognition models were model airplanes used by the military to train forward observers and pilots to visually identify airplanes. They were 1/72 scale, and painted solid black so the person could get a feel for the different aircraft.

Part of it is that I'm not as good at bodywork/painting as I would like to be, and part of it is that I've got a lot of cool ideas. I do finish some with paint, wheels, and everything, but the ones I do are curbside.

On the bright side, with all the reissues coming out, I am working through my stash, not buying any more models and finishing up some projects. I've got almost everything that interests me that is out now, and have for a while. I will buy most new issues of 80s and later cars, though. Anything earlier has to be really special.

I'm glad I'm not alone. Another issue is that I can buy kits way faster than I can build them. Since I moved in February I have finished two models and I swear I've bought 40. I'm sick, I can't help myself.

This is a support group! Buy 'em, build 'em, bash 'em, half finish 'em', put 'em back in the box, start another one. Repeat as needed!

I've got my share of unfinished projects also. Either I get stumped, or I come up with one more "great idea" that has to be done right now, then nothing gets finished. The oldest one I started in 1983, swear I'm going to finish it some day too.

I also have dozens of unfinished builds and I can't stop buying them either - I have 8 times as many in boxes as "under glass".
