TooOld Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) I built this back in 1977 and a couple months later I packed it up for another move courtesy of the Air Force . I've been looking for another one and this morning I decided to unpack it and see what kind of shape it was in . To my surprise only the front wheels and the sidepipes had fallen off ! Not bad for 35 years worth of moves ! This was built straight out of the box , which is something I rarely do anymore . I'd like to build another and display them side by side . realgone58 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Beautiful!, and it's held up well. I love to see some of these older kits built up boxart style.
Gluhead Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Not sure I've ever seen this kit built to match the boxart. Looks great, and hard to imagine it having held up so well.
Dominik Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Awesome Corvette - never seen before! Thanks for sharing - she looks beautiful!
TooOld Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 Thanks for the comments guys . The paint is Pactra Enamel sprayed onto the bare plastic with no primer and no clear coat ! Also , you can't see it in the photo , but the price sticker says $2.39 ! ! I bought it in 1977 at a Kmart .
Bartster Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Very nice! l also built one about the same time. Unfortunately, mine is long gone. Just ordered another from Steve Kohler at Star Models. Great kit.
TooOld Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 What took you so long to unpack it? Just one of those things that I never got around to . I have several built models from the 70's packed away , along with some old slot cars .
TooOld Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 Thanks Bart and Pat . I'm going to give Steve a call and see if he has another one !
Guest Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 That is really nice Bob! Certainly doesn't look like it was built many years ago! That was one of my favorite kits back in the day. Don't know how many I built and destroyed. Someday, I gotta get me another one to build.
slusher Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Very nice looking model, great color and finish. looks fresh built. Perfect mach to the boxart...
Greg Pugh Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I'd say she held up VERY well. Awesome looking Vette!
TooOld Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Lewis , I'm afraid the other models I've unpacked so far didn't survive as well as this one . It's going take some time to get them back into original condition . Still have a few to unpack , you never know . Greg , Thanks . I was really surprised when I opened the box and saw this one in such great shape ! It was packed in a bunch of toilet paper !
Greg Pugh Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I always wrap my cars in toilet paper for transporting. Whether it's going to a show or moving or whatever. I feel like if it's safe enough for my..........Nevermind.
Helix Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Still looks a treat after all those years, good job
JasonFL Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Wow bob that vette is in amazing condition for 35 years worth of moves and done so beautifully. That red looks great especially for being shot right out of the can without primer and you only paid $2.39 for the kit. Overall it was a win win. Nice build
surfjunke Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Very nice work. Glad to see it has aged quite well & still looks great.

Remember that $2.39 was the price in 1977 at a Kmart , and they were always priced lower than anyone else . Would you believe that I paid less than a dollar for the can of Pactra red spray paint ?
JasonFL Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Ya, I saw that in your post I just thought it was cool how you paid only $2.39 for a full kit and a dollar for a can of spray paint and your model still looks like you just built it yesterday. Can't beat that. It's amazing how much prices have changed. I don't think I ever paid less then $8-10 bucks when I was a kid in early 90's.
