bbowser Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Junior in high school 1971. Bought it for $400, sold it when I went in the service after graduation to my great uncle who wrecked it about 6 months later. Dad wouldn't let me park it in the driveway because it leaked oil like a freighter from the "O"-rings at the end of the pushrod tubes. '66 Monza with the 110hp engine and Powerglide. Lot of great memories. Just finished tonight. This is the AMT 'Prestige' kit, pretty simple. I did put in the side glass and rolled down the driver's window for laughs. Hope you enjoy, comments welcome.
jeffs396 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Nicely done Bruce!!! That'll bring a smile to your face everytime you look at it, memories!
rmvw guy Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Very nice and great story! One of my all time favourite builds has to be my first ride. Hope you had as much fun with building yours as I did building mine.
cobraman Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Nice job ! I had a 67 Monza back in the day. It was a pretty good car and I was in Chicago at the time and that car was great in the snow.
charlie8575 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Where's the oil streaks? All kidding aside, Bruce, nice build. Charlie Larkin
roadhawg Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Thats great, and good story to go with it! Don't see too many 'Vairs.
Sixties Sam Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Nice Corvair, Bruce! Coincidently, my first car was a Corvair, bought in 1970. Mine was a 1965 convertible, and I built a model of it back then, cutting the top off a coupe to make a convert. I kept the model all these years and rebuilt and repainted it in 2010. I added a Modelhaus resin uptop. Here's a pic.
FordGuy1984 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Nice build you have here! I have one of these on my work bench at the moment, trying to put the motor from an Enzo in it for a forum project on another site.
jcbigpaw Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Nice build. Been wanting to do a corvair for a long time. It's on my list. Good job.
CorvairJim Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Sweet! You pretty much nailed the 1966 Madeira Maroon paint. I noticed you couldn't resist upgrading your old ride to the 140 horse engine from the 110 you say the 1:1 car had. While my first car wasn't a Corvair, I did build my first Corvair within the past year. I restored a badly damaged 1965 Corsa coupe annual into the '65 Monza 110 that got me started on the path to total Corvair addiction! Here's a link to it's "Under Glass" thread if you're interested: http://www.modelcars...=+1965 +corvair

I used to drop the PG into 1st rolling up to a stop sign and then stomp on it, leaving billowing clouds of blue smoke in my wake. Ah youth and stupidity, I got about 100 miles per quart (of oil). I saw your build earlier, nice job. I couldn't remember if mine had the silver painted taillight panel or not, so I left it. I've only got one or two B&W photos of the old girl.
High octane Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Nice build as my second car was a '65 Corvair Corsa that I bought new and it had the four carbs, four speed, and posi. It was a lot of fun.
vintagercr Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Nice build! The car I learned to drive in was a 61 4 door 3 Spd and my mom burnt the clutch out of it and my dad thought it was to costly to get it fixed so he sold it to a local wrecker. It was pristine. Got my license in 71 and bought a 66 for 75 bucks and drove it for a coupe of years and sold it to my uncle for 75 bucks. It was a great car in the snow and fun to drive. I have a soft spot for them.
carchub Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Great job on that build, I love 1:1, what with their authenticity and the like. It's a bonus to put meaning into anything. I'm a Junior in high school too, and I just bought my first car for $400...although not a Corvair. I laughed at the half-coincidence though =) I bought a 1972 Ford F250 Camper Special if anyone was curious
W-Machine Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Very nice! I always liked the styling of the second-generation Corvair.
