Bluemiles22 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 This is a 409 for the amt 62 bel air. I decided not to use the carbs from the kit so I was thinking about these. The question is are these too big for this particular engine?
gbdolfans Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Hi Rich,Those carbs look very nice, but, they look a little big to my eye.Of course,I am an OF and can't see anyway!!!
CrazyGirl Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 those duel pumpers do look a little big , but a very cool looking set of carbs i must say !!
Blown03SVT Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 They are nice carbs for sure. They do look a little big scale wise (the fuel bowls are covering the valve covers) and as far as from a realistic standpoint the 2 1050 Dominators on anything but a full race Pro Stock engine looks to be a little overkill.
Bluemiles22 Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Thanks for the replies guys, I figured they looked too big that's why I asked, any suggestions on what to use?
Guest Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 If you have a single four barrel intake, one of those Dominators would look just right. If you want to stick with the two four setup, the carbs from the Revell '64 Fairlane are pretty nice looking. What do the kit carbs look like?
Bluemiles22 Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 The kit carbs are kinda lacking in detail ill get a picture of them up later. I do have a 64 tbolt kit so ill take a look at them. Thanks for the help
Exotics_Builder Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 (edited) What are you trying to do? For stock, Carter AFB's would be correct for a higher horsepower 409. Morgan Automotive Detail offers such carbs in resin: If you are using the snorkel aircleaner, the bette detail would be lost unless you plan to have it lift off. Otherwise, you could look for smaller Holley single or double pumper carbs for more of a street machine option that would be streetable. Edited March 19, 2013 by Exotics_Builder
Bluemiles22 Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Basically I'm just trying to find something that has good detail and that's practical for a 409. The car its going into is gonna be stock So the carbs pictured look like they may be perfect. Thanks for the info I think I'm gonna have to go order a set now lol

Those look like 600cfm Holleys , and they would look good on a 409 !
Exotics_Builder Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Those look like 600cfm Holleys , and they would look good on a 409 ! You're right, they do. I just pulled the picture off his web site as I'm in the office today. I know Carter AFB's have been available, but I'm with you on the Holley's.
blunc Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 those do look like excellent representations of vacuum secondary four barrel Holley carbs. it's hard to find a kit carb that doesn't just look like an incorrect blob of plastic. I may put a thermoquad on a mopar motor just to see if anyone recognizes it.
Guest G Holding Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 (edited) You have a 348 / 409.....you need the Tripower setup.....only way to go! Edited March 22, 2013 by G Holding
W-409 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 You have a 348 / 409.....you need the Tripower setup.....only way to go! But TriPower was not available for 409 Engine. Only 348 had that setup from the Factory. I have a set of Resin Carter AFB Carbs, and they are nice. Just can't remember who made them. But with some extra detailing, the carburetors from that Bel Air kit can be made useable.
Kris Morgan Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Rich, I was reading this thread and noticed,,,I just filled your order. Thanks. They are packed and will be shipped soon. Kris Morgan Morgan Automotive Detail
blunc Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 (edited) Kris, your carter/edelbrock carbs look more like vacuum secondary Holley carbs to me than real carter/edelbrock carbs. (just my opinion). The holley dominators look correct. Edited March 23, 2013 by blunc
Bluemiles22 Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 Kris, thanks so much looking forward to my order
Greg Myers Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Those are Holley Dominator carbs, don't get much bigger than that. Remember old hot rod adage : " If'n somes good, mores' better, an' Too much, is just about right."
Greg Myers Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 348 - 409 ? they all look the same on the out side. Who's to say it wasn't bored out ? Here's a 437 fer ya. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/hrdp_0911_chevy_w_series_engine_build/viewall.html
Greg Myers Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 That's the neat thing about building models, as long as you have the details right you can call it anything you like. 527 ?
