crazyjim Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Finished today! Painted in HOK cinder red with some kandy tangerine over that and cleared. I really messed up the box so I scratched one up and made it a work truck. The owner is a welder. Can't see much on the interior shot. Sorry. The engine is from the '50 Olds kit, only I modified it a little. I used the portable Polaroid photo booth for these pics. I hope they're better than my past pics. Suggestions are certainly welcome. 1
Chris White Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I have always enjoyed your builds, nice work as always. Is there a meaning for your liscence plates
crazyjim Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 Thank you very much, Chris. The plates mimic the Vietnam Veterans Service Ribbon. Americans who served in Vietnam were awarded the medal. Did you know there's a Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial? It's over in Windsor, Ontario. It was built by 3 Vietnam Veterans from Detroit. They took 2nd & 3rd mortgages out on their houses to get it built and say thank you to the Canadians who came down, joined the US armed forces, and were killed in Vietnam. How's that for a history lesson?
Jantrix Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Good looking build Jim. The photos are good buy man you need to find a flatter surface. Get some foam core board and paint it something flat and pale.
crazyjim Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 Thanks, Rob. The pickup was the 1st subject in the new photobooth. I used a miniature milk crate to raise the build up. You can see where the tires went into the slots of the crate. The booth comes with lights and several different color backgrounds, so there's no need for me to get anything else (I don't think). All I need is some experience with the thing. I can't expect miracles from a $35 purchase.
Chris White Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Jim thanks for the history lesson, but more importantly thank you for your service
crazyjim Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 More than happy to supply info, Chris. If you ever get a chance, google Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It's a beautiful memorial.
James2 Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Almost to clean for a work horse! Good looking truck. What are the valve stems?
bug1623 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 nice truck and i really dig the torch tanks in the back im working on a set my self did you scratch build the gauges and the torch tip would you mind showing a pic of the tip a little better
crazyjim Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Thanks guys. James - the valve stems are just pieces of wire. I drill a hole in the wheel, use Micro Krystal Klear to glue in the wire, and then add a small glob of the Krystal Klear to the end. When the glue is dry, I paint it whatever color. Cliff - the welding tanks, gauges, and torch all came from some kit a loooooooooong time ago. It looks to be a cutting torch. I'll try to get a better pic for you. How's this? tooltas Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 very nice truck jim them tanks are out of the 53 ford f100 kit by amt.
crazyjim Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 Thanks, Todd. That '53 Ford Efffie kit you mention is very, very old. I have no idea if it's available anywhere, anymore. As I recall, the kit had lots of extra parts.
uncle potts Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Nice build. Love the color. A couple of observations.......1, The hoses on a torch are red for acytelene and green for oxygen, and 2, those tanks would need to be secured somehow. If they fell over and knocked the valves off, they would become a rocket. Just a couple things an old welder would notice. All in all a nice build. Actually attempting this one myself with the same theme, but with a flat bed instead of the box.
bug1623 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 thanks for the pic of the torch it helped make my mind up on how to scratch build one
slusher Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Thats a sharp truck Jim, love the color and detail. l knew the meaning of the tag. Been around some really good veterans. love the stories..
crazyjim Posted May 11, 2013 Author Posted May 11, 2013 Thanks, Fatkidd. Just think. All this SHINY :) is your fault.
fatkidd Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 I will fully and whole-heartedly take that blame. The world NEEDS more things that are SHINY!
crazyjim Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 Yeah. And like you say, anything else is just dull.
