Ace-Garageguy Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) A few simple questions, and the reason I'm curious is to look informally at possible links between the slow death of 'building-things' hobbies and the evolution / devolution of the family and other societal changes. I came across a web article on "Alpha Refined" (a website about "the lifestyles and interests of traditional men") that lists "building models" as one if the "10 Hobbies Every Man Should Try". It got me thinking, so... 1) Was your introduction to modeling at home? 2) From whom? 3) What kind of models (cars, planes, trains, etc)? 4) What did the person who introduced you to modeling do for a living ? 5) How old were you? 6) About what year was your introduction? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1) Yes. 2) My father 3) He built planes (static and flying) and kites, but from early on I was fascinated with trains and cars 4) Construction engineer 5) 6 or 7 6) mid '50s Edited May 24, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy

ScaleDale Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I built my models at home but all of the kits came from a LHS owned by a neighbor, so I guess Mr. Brown introduced me to modeling. My mother funded the operation so she gets a lot of the credit. My first models were aircraft. I don't recall the first, but I had an F86 gunning down a MIG on a string over my bed. Mr. Brown had some sort of mundane day job so he quit and opened his Hobby Shop. My mother the sponsor was a hotel waitress. I was probably 12 when I started building models. I got sidetracked by rockets for a while and got into cars in my mid teens. I started building stuff from whatever I could get my hands on at 5 or 6. That would have been 1952 or '53. Model building started in 1959 or '60. I resumed just last Winter. Dale

vypurr59 Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I was introduced to modeling from a nurse at the hospital, recovering from bone graft surgery. She bought me a Indycar model and glue. I built it out of the box, could not paint(for obvious reasons). I was 10 years old. Was around the year of 1971 I built cars, planes, boats and whatever I could get at the 5 and dime store. I then just stuck with cars, cause I could see the cars I was building for reference. (Dad got tired of driving from Cleveland to Dayton, to see the planes. Jeff Ace, thanks for this thread GREAT IDEA It is always good to hear how people got involved with a hobby.

Tom Geiger Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) 1) Was your introduction to modeling at home? NO 2) From whom? My father's cousin / neighborhood kids 3) What kind of models (cars, planes, trains, etc)? Cars of course 4) What did the person who introduced you to modeling do for a living ? maybe a newspaper route 5) How old were you? 8 / 10 6) About what year was your introduction? 1965 / 1968 Note - My first memory of models was at my father's youngest cousin's house. Dickey and Donnie were teens and they shared a large bedroom with a shelf that ran around all four walls up near ceiling height. The shelf was just wide enough for a model car sideways, and to me at 8 it looked like the model cars were all driving around the room. That was the coolest thing I had ever seen. The best part was that they GAVE ME a built model to take home with me. I don't remember what it was but remember this event like it was yesterday. Since my father was a US Army officer, we then moved to Izmir, Turkey from 1966-1968. I had my Matchbox cars, but there was no opportunities to buy new toys there, so models were forgotten until we returned to the US in the summer of 1968. The kid across the street took me into his basement where he and his brother were building model cars. That was it! I was building with them from that point forward. Some guys are lucky that their fathers were into cars or built models. Mine never did. Whenever I built a nice one I got the "If you put that effort into your school work you'd have straight As".
