Hi gang. After a 6 week hiatus of travelling, visiting friends in North Carolina, and a week in Disneyworld with my grandson, I'm happily back at my workbench. I picked up a resin '58 Oldsmobile convertible kit from The Modelhaus and am adding it to my "1958 build mission". This kit came with a full width continental kit. I have so far sanded off the lettering on the hood & trunk, along with the door handles & wipers. I'll replace those with pieces from my parts stash. I painted the body with Tamiya Pink for a real 50's feel. I'll be putting on chrome reversed wheels with pink painted wheel spyders also from Modelhaus. Pics of the painted body follow. I still have to give it another coat as I had to sand some "schmutz" spots. I also have to paint the connie kit pieces and the dashboard which I only took out of the Westley Bleche White bath today and they're drying. The interior will be done in pink and black with maybe a little white thrown in. Thanks for looking in on this new project.

Carl, I think it is Tamiya TS-23 Pink. I'll double check that tomorrow.

Tom, I miss you're ugly mug too buddy. I'll be posting the usual updates on this build as they happen.

I also picked up a half dozen new sheets of BMF at NNL East, which I'll definitely need to continue building these 50's cars.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments.

Go Rich! I know you've been chomping at the bit to start this one since NNL East. I'm gonna be a watchin'! And your camper is coming along, so check out my thread too!

Well folks... we've hit a major malfunction here...!!! When I originally painted this car while I was down in NC, there were a couple of fish eyes that showed up on the body. I sanded those spots down to the primer and today repainted it with the same Tamiya Pink (TS-25) that I originally used. Whatever caused the fish eyes apparently didn't go away with the sanding...Grrrrrr...!!! They showed up again. Sooooo, the body is now in the paint stripper container.

I'm not sure that I have enough paint left in the spray can to repaint the body and the continental kit pieces and the dashboard. I don't think my LHS has this color of Tamiya paint (at least I don't recall seeing it there). Inasmuch as I hate doing so, I may have to rethink the color scheme for this car.

I'm a little bit bummed out by this, but hey, it's not the end of the world right? This car would also look good in Red, or in Black... How about Green...???

I'll get back to it tomorrow after the paint comes off.

I hate you have to strip the body Rich, but they do make paint every day. l buy my Tamiya on ebay or Hobbylinc.com. Now place around here. How about Red or Silver??

OK, my buddy Tom is going to pick up a couple of cans of the Tamiya pink paint from the Hobbytown USA shop in Ashville, NC where I originally bought it, and he'll ship it to me (he works for the Post Office). Until I get it I'll work on blackwashing the grille, making the chromed headlights look a little better, putting blue dots in the taillights, assembling the wheels & tires, and starting work on the interior.

Isn't model building fun...?

Stay tuned for progress reports.

Love those big old land yachts of the late 50's!

When I first met the wife (was in eighth grade) her parents had a pink 58 Buick!

Wow! That's a real bummer Rich! :( And that was lookin' real nice! I'm sure you'll get it back to the way you want it. One of the nicest colors I can remember seeing '58 Olds' painted was a color called "Heather". You can spot it on the color chart below courtesy of Auto Color Library............

Your Olds reminds me of the one my Uncle had back in the mid '60s. His was a 98 just like yours, but was triple white. White body, white top, and white interior. As a little kid, that car was a real beast to me seeing it! :) They're worth some HUGE BUCKS now as of course, that was a one year deal, and GM didn't make that many of them considering back in the day.

Dessert Glow looks like "Mary K' pink! It was a funny sight to see 25 Mary K pink Caddy's in a row rollin down the line! Your 58 looks good in that color!

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. This will be the first model that I've ever painted Pink. I just had a picture of it in Pink in my mind's eye but I didn't want the pink too be too pink, if you know what I mean. Hopefully it will come out better the second time around.

Thanks Tom... I owe ya big time.

Oh BOY...!!! MAJOR MELTDOWN TIME............ LITERALLY......!!!!!!

I have always used Scalecoat as a paint stripper, both on plastic kits and resin and never had any ill effects. Well...... this time was different...... way different...!!!

The Olds body just melted in spots... the hood corners lifted and twisted(it was molded in), the trunk corners lifted and twisted, and the windshield frame collapsed...!!! Looks like I'll have to order a new body from Modelhaus... :(

Live and learn. I'll really be sure to clean the resin bodies better from now on to be sure I don't get any more darn fisheyes.

So this project is in a temporary holding pattern.
