Tom Geiger Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 And remember that a $50 kit today isn't the same as a $50 kit way back when you started buying as an adult. Back then kits were retailing $10 so that $50 kit was 5 times base. Now a new kit fetches $25 in a hobby shop so that $50 kit is only twice base price. A kit would have to be $125 to be a $50 kit today. I know, that is logic, but it doesn't keep us from whining.
kalbert Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) I've been on the lookout for a particular model that until a few months ago was somewhat rare on that auction site. It's not a particularly desirable model to most, but it's on my must have list. A few months ago one went on auction and was run up to the high $40's. Within hours there were several listed from different sellers with a BIN price over $50!! They have all now disappeared, whether they sold or were taken off the market I don't know, but I suspect they were allowed to expire. A few days went by and another single showed up and was bid north of $40, then again a whole bunch were listed for around $50 BIN. I waited... and waited... and waited. I'm still waiting because I know these are not rare, they were produced in several different runs by the thousands, and there can't be that much interest in them... someday the game will be over at which point I'll start bidding (or they'll be rerun and I'll just go get one downtown). What kit was this happening with Kyle?

clovis Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Thank you for the replies. It is kind of amazing how kit prices will fluctuate on the auction site. I've periodically checked prices and have found some that have given me sticker shock, but 6 months later, would be considered cheap. Any chance that group builds are driving some of the demand?
southpier Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 always. and if a great looking model has wheels from a 1956 Strummer Exotica, everybody is going on the prowl to buy one. good thing is that maybe ONE of those folks will resin cast the wheels, and the rest of us can buy them at a "bargain" for 10$ a set.
Maindrian Pace Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Ebay prices have a lot to do with who is looking for that kit, that week. If two or more bidders want it bad enough, there is no such thing as book value. Some kits consistently bid high, but even those have a bad week sometimes. And that's when I get them. I've bid up to $75 on a kit, lost out to higher bids a half dozen times on the same kit, and then won one for $30 or so the next time; and often a nicer one at that. It just depends who you are bidding against and how bad they want it. -MJS

Most of the stuff that I buy off of eBay I wait until the last millisecond to bid I get better deals most of the time. Another good part of doing it that way is that I bid at an honest price, takes a lot more self control doing it that way. Then again I haven't paid stupid prices for anything either!
Greg Myers Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Yes, that's called "Sniping" not that there's anything wrong with that.
Tom Geiger Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Agreed. I was looking for an early Chevette to duplicate the car my sister in law drove when she was young. I put an eBay Search Agent on it, so I'd see each kit that came on the market. There was one for $100 in someones eBay Store. Then I bid and followed a few that sold for $40-60. This past week I won one for $20. So it's patience and sticking to your guns. Eventually you'll get what you want at your price.

Tom Geiger Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Sniping? I use a sniping service for all my bidding. I put in my bid and forget about it. Guaranteed six second snipe every time. It doesn't guarantee I win if someone bids higher than my proxy bid. The other good thing about bidding on the sniping service is that your bids aren't permanent like on eBay. For instance, when I won the above mentioned Chevette, I went in and cancelled my bid on another upcoming auction since I didn't need it anymore. One time I was looking for the '50 Ford diecast large panel truck. They were all going around $50. and I wasn't winning. I bid $22 each on about 5 of them, hoping to win one... well when I looked, I had won three.

I used up all my free snipe's on whatever site I use, so I need to find another site that offers free snipping, or start paying for it, I dont do a lot of bidding much anymore, mostly BIN

I bought 100 bid points for $10, been bidding for a year without thinking about it. Surely worth the money.
lanesteele240 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I bought a lsd rear end off of a rust bomb 300zx turbo for 100 bucks once. The guy was laughing as i struggled to get it off before it hit the crusher. It sold for 480 bucks on ebay. Bet he was thinking ,what a dummy All along i knew what he had and played dumb. That 200 dollar pushbike could have sold for 1200 bucks when the guy found a buyer
Danno Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I bought a wrecked Cutlass coupe for $200 once. Drug it home. The Lovely & Gracious Mrs. B was not so lovely or gracious about it. But then I used about $1,000 worth of parts from it to upgrade various odds and ends on our Cutlass convertible. And, then, I sold the coupe parts car for $300. Yes, she did apologize.
Tom Geiger Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 (edited) Mrs. G came home one day and found a shipment of 5 copier paper boxes on the door step. She blew a gasket upon finding out I had bought someone's car brochure collection for $200. She never apologized when I sold a not even quantifiable amount of these on eBay the next month for over $1000. But she did cash the checks! Edited July 23, 2013 by Tom Geiger
