Harry P. Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 If you take away their I Phone,Tablet etc., a lot of them couldn't answer even the most basic question because they couldn't Google it. They don't have to use their brains. They have a hand held device that does it for them. The ironic thing is, as technology advances, people's mental skills decline. People used to find their destination by navigating. Then they invented paper maps, so now we had a printed guide that we could use to help find our way. Then they invented GPS, and now a computer does all the "thinking" for us and tells us what to do. So now we tend to rely on a machine to do our thinking for us, and many people probably couldn't find their way to the next town without GPS to tell them where to go. People used to do arithmetic. We used to know how to multiply and divide, using only a pencil and paper. Then calculators came along, and I would be willing to bet that today, a huge chunk of the population could not divide 956 by 14 without using a calculator to do it for them. People used to read. Now we have audio books that "read" to us. For every technological step forward, the teeming masses take an intellectual step backward.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 The scary thing is... there are millions like her out there... Ummm...at least tens of millions just in the US. Billions on the planet.
southpier Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 should we rehash the "make change from a dollar" thing?
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 If you take away their I Phone,Tablet etc., a lot of them couldn't answer even the most basic question because they couldn't Google it. They don't have to use their brains. There's an even more disturbing thing happening, in my opinion, that goes right along with Roger's remark. Even if they HAVE computers or tablets or smart-phones and CAN google the information, without a grounding in basic concepts and a well-defined critical thinking process, many (MANY) people I encounter have NO IDEA WHICH GOOGLE INFORMATION IS RELEVANT to the question being asked. Just google images for "osmosis" and see how many hits you get. There are several explanatory diagrams that make the concept simple to understand, but knowing which one to take home is the trick, and that's where education is failing...in teaching people to THINK.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 should we rehash the "make change from a dollar" thing? Just go to McD's or Subway or the grocery store or the auto-parts store or Wendy's or ask your date to figure a 20% tip.
Petetrucker07 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I was being sarcastic. It wasnt my intention to step on anybody who has or is getting an education. The other day, at mickey Ds, my total came out 6.85, i handed the little blonde 7.00, then i said oh wait i have the 85 cents, no BS she said whats that for, you gave me plenty. My jaw dropped, i couldnt believe i actual heard that! The whole GPS thing, i have GPS, and the trusty ol thomas guide, i can read a map, i prefer it over the GPS in a sense, the GPS can help navigate freeways like LA, where there are 3 or 4 intersecting, but city streets, i want to know what streets lead up to the 1 i need, reading a map is becoming a lost art, like hyroglyphics, wow that was a big word i better sit down, dammit, i already am. Anyway, my paint is finally dry, back to modeling!
JunkPile Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Just because one can read a map doesn't mean the same one can fold a map
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 That's pretty funny. And entirely true. I remember being annoyed with myself on multiple occasions trying to get the things folded back up correctly.
Petetrucker07 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Hey hey, i said thomas guide, its spiral bound, yet some how it still gets folded wrong, i cant figure it out. Maybe a self edumacated person can help
unclescott58 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 You gotta watch this..... Wow!? The trouble is, I work kids like that from time to time. They just don't get it. I worked with one girl a couple of years ago, an 8th grader at the time, who did not know that things like wood and paper came from trees! She had no idea why people would need to cut down trees. The wooden table she was sitting at had more brains. By now this young lady has probably graduated. God forbid. Scott

Scott I used to work w/ a woman that didn't seem to realize that most food sold in groceries were grown in nature..i.e. that steak came from cattle, eggs from chicken, milk from cattle, vegetables from the ground, etc... Thatswhatshesaid Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Just go to McD's or Subway or the grocery store or the auto-parts store or Wendy's or ask your date to figure a 20% tip. If you really want to confuse them give them a penny. For example if your total is $4.86, give them $5.01. Utter confusion. It's quite annoying to tell a cashier how to do their job.
Thatswhatshesaid Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 If train A leaves the station at 10AM traveling west at 60 mph and train B leaves the same station traveling east at 50 mph, what color is farmer Jones' tractor? Ha! It's a trick question. We don't know what time train B left.
Petetrucker07 Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 What really irks me are those got dang self check out machines. Since when did the customer become an employee. The stupidest part of it, they have a cashier or 2, standing there watching.
Deano Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 (edited) ...or a TV news anchor... 'The bubble-headed bleach-blonde comes on at five ..." BTW Harry, I love your avatar! Got to see him in 1979 when I was in college. He played at the University of Missouri-Rolla and we actually got to meet him after the show. Very approachable man. His death was such a loss. I actually prefer the self-checkouts, when the scanners are working properly and all the items I'm buying have been correctly entered in the store's database. When I go through the cashier line, there's invariably some clueless boob with a full cart in the 10-item line, or some center-of-the-universe fool has to update the checker on his or her family, gall bladder, religious conversion or whatever, or somebody can't grasp how to swipe a card or has to dump her purse looking for a checkbook, or someone is trying to buy wine with foodstamps...you get the picture. Just let me pay for my stuff and get on my way...please.

This, plus having worked retail and running registers for as long as I have, I can usually be in and out in no time unless I'm writing a check........and even then...........
Krazy Rick Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Seeing model companies put out "Vintage Box Art" ......... and then destroy it, by putting their logo and / or print, on the front of the box; rendering it useless for display; thus defeating the whole purpose of trying to market the thing as a vintage reissue
