Yep Carl. I remember the '79 blizzard pretty well too. Man what a mess. I made quite a lot shoveling snow that week, which of course went into new plastic!! :P:D

Found out that my current version of Win7 apparently doesn't have native text-to-speech (TTS) capability other than a seemingly useless utility called "Narrator" (I suppose it's for sight-challenged users, under the aegis of "ease of access" ) that refuses to recognize my Word documents. XP had a lovely and simple to use TTS engine that was an integral part of Office / Word. Looks like Win8 has the older functionality restored, but not all versions of 7 do.

Win7 DOES include speech recognition, but if you've ever used TinyLimp's version, you may know it's not terribly good. WHY 7 had speech recognition but not native TTS is completely beyond my powers of understanding.

There appear to be some odd workarounds and "hidden" commands to get TTS to function in 7, but it's just stupid compared to the easy and efficient functionality of the XP version.

I write a lot, and it's helpful to be able to have text read back to me, to get a better feel of how something will scan when read by someone else.

Currently looking at outside software, as I used to run an additional TTS package when I was fiddling with an early AI simulator.

I hear you, I made a lot of money from shoveling and even bought a bike and had plenty left.

The Blizzard of '79 was NO match for the Snow of '67 where I was lucky enough to get my car home, and walked or hitched a ride to work for the next few days.

I was 2 in 67 Nick, but I remember hearing my parents talk about it...

Some people, eh?

If you're getting something, wouldn't you try your hardest to get it right, especially if someone else was making it? Funny world.

Main reason I pretty much insist on e-mail confirmation of every conversation I have regarding work. It's almost unbelievable after almost 45 years of the stuff, how poorly people remember, in general, the specifics of any given conversation, and they ALWAYS remember it incorrectly in a way that favors their position.

It's handy to be able to send them their own written words to remind them of just exactly what was agreed to.

Still, I've had folks say back "but that wasn't what I meant, or wasn't what I thought the agreement was". HUH?? Reading and writing comprehension as a required business skill might be good.

That's expecting TOO MUCH these days. Didn't you get the PC Memo, Bill?
