Alas, even more expensive restaurants are prone to issues. Went to a nice restaurant for dinner Friday night (local place that's about $50 each with wine)...appetiZers came out after entrees, one entree was undercooked/raw, etc. frustrating....

So ... you did have a polite, cordial conversation with the manager, yes? I certainly would have and I tend to go to the "$50 dinner-for-four" restaurants.

Yes. Basically got one entree and the appetizer for free. I also wrote a critical review on Yelp.

.... put the fish filet on the center of the bun....

this is completely different than when I was a lad. anyway, Dad always said "the only job you start at the top is digging a hole."

Speaking of Yelp reviews, I hate seeing reviews that just go over the top. "Most worst horrible thing that ever happened to me!" Really folks? Ok, so something went wrong. Keep it proportional. Slamming the heck out of some one or thing just because you can is not help full. Tell us what went wrong and if the manager gave you the meal for free or a coupon for a return trip, well tell us that too! Mistakes happen. Don't act like you would like to shut the place because you dinning partner died from a knife welding chef attack. Keep it reasonable. Oh, buy the way Rob, this was about Yelp reviews in general, not directed at you. You just made me think of it. I have written my fair share of negative comments, I just keep it reasonable.

Yeah, I keep my reviews simple and straightforward, list the pros and cons.

That is why I tend not to put much stock into reviews like those on Yelp, everyone has an opinion and different levels of expectations , of course, I am not saying that the reviews are not helpfull, but we know how people can be. People will say a company is the worst ever over the silliest of reasons.

yeah, they can be questionable...I use Yelp along

With local sources like Chow Bella to read reviews on restaurants I want to try...speaking of Yelp, they have local office in the same building as my client in Scottsdale. Their staff seems to be only 20 something hipsters ...lol

Taking online reviews as gospel isn't too smart.

Anyone can say anything in an online review... real or fantasy. Factual review or "screw you" diatribe based on... what???

Online reviews are worth exactly what you pay for them.

obviously, recommendations from friends, family and coworkers are best, but I like online reviews from local sources for new or unfamiliar places..Urban Spoon, Yelp, etc ...like Angies List for home services..had good luck with them. Edited by Rob Hall

Again... online reviews are a complete shot in the dark as far as relying on them.

I can write an online review of a restaurant I've never even been to. ^_^

See my point?

you have to be contrary about everything, don't you? I do place more weight on reviews by Chow Bella (local newspaper staffed) or Zagat...

I would take a paid reviewer's word anytime over an anonymous online review that could be total BS. Online reviews by "who knows who" are completely unreliable. You could be reading an honest review written by a person who is actually trying to be helpful... or you could be reading a restaurant "review" written by some guy in his mother's basement who has never even been near that restaurant, much less actually eaten there, but gets his kicks writing imaginary reviews just to see his words online.

Let's see... tonight I might review that little bistro in Cannes that I've never been to... :P

When I use reviews on products/business, I like to go with the overall score from them instead of what each review says.

For instance, I was going to buy a new camera this month, a DSLR, and spent a lot of time reading reviews, both from people reviewing the camera for magazines/websties, and those of user reviews, while the camera got decent reviews from the user's , it got not so good reviews from the people doing it on the professional level , and just using Amazon as an example, it got like 4 out 5 stars, made it difficult to make a decision. But there were a few user reviews that matched what the professional reviewers said.

I have not used Yelp yet, I should get the app and check it out.

Or the review could've been written by a competitor to make the restaurant look bad!

I recently looked at Yelp reviews for our favorite restaurant. We go there often, the food is great and the staff is friendly and efficient. Same staff have been there forever so the owner must be doing something right by them.

There were a lot of reviews, but some of them must have been from another planet! Ranting about meals we have eaten that are delicious, the "uncaring and surely staff"... makes me wonder if they were ever there or what kind of crazy they are!

why does everyone hate 20-something hipsters?

I wasn't hating on them, just an observation on Yelp's staff. Personally, being in the tech industry and always being interested in the latest gadgets, computers and all things modern in general, I find that I relate more to younger people than the typical crabby, living in the past older folks one encounters in life ( and especially in this hobby)

My job irks me. But it does every day.

Why is it always that when one tries to do their hobby as a job they hate it... then get out of it only to go into a different field that they hate even more, and want to go back to previous field of work? Just to hate it again more than likely.

I keep telling myself I'd love get out of what im doing, not go back to what I did before, (because there's no money in it unless your 17-19yrs old) and then try something new that I enjoy as a hobby.... like paint/bodywork... But something tells me its not all peaches and cream in that field either. Not sure I could do flat rate auto body stuff.... Guess I'll suck it up and keep doing what I'm doing so I dont hate my hobbies.

I understand. Several years back I went to work building hot-rods as a vocation. Many days there IS a pleasant feeling of accomplishment, and I have wide freedom to do things the way I know to be right, but many times, the old buggers of having to deal with crapp work that's gone before us, re-engineering expensive aftermarket parts so they'll actually work and fit as advertised, and juggling the client's often-conflicting wants with their budgets...well, it gets to be just like any other thing you HAVE to do to make a living.

At least for the time being, I still enjoy it more than I dislike it...but now that I'm being handed all the higher-tech, late-model electronics because I CAN do the work (I went in there to build low-stress traditional cars, which I can pretty much do in my sleep)...the scales may be turning.

I've done some complex commission builds and I have to agree with Bill. Building models for someone else is not the fun it is doing it for yourself. First off, you are dealing with someone else's expectations, standards and timelines. It is a bit like building a contest model the last day before the contest. It doesn't mean that there wasn't a lot of pleasure in doing it, just that it was different. Would I want to be a full time modeler for profit? Heck no, but occasionally it is not so bad, just don't make me do it every day.

I was kinda late to the party I guess you could say... I didnt understand/appreciate/recognize "traditional" hot rods until recently... and I love them. Of course, when it comes to the traditional stuff... I've learned if you dont have period correct parts and look then youll catch hell.

I only wish I had gone thru some sort of metal working classes or training so I could maybe get my foot in the door somewhere. I think I'd like to build hot rods. Really any kind of hot rod, high tech, low tech, muscle cars... I just love cars... especially when its being paid for by someone elses money and I get to be the one doing the wrenching/building/planning.

Which also may explain why none of my own projects are done.

Today, I'm irked by the fact that it's Christmas Eve and there's not a single flake of snow on the ground. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the only two days of the year when there SHOULD be a nice, thick blanket of snow on everything. :)
