Harry P. Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 And since I'm an American, a U.S. citizen, I write checks (but only occasionally). What colour are they?
Danno Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 What colour are they? Ahhh, humour! More importantly, they're NOT rubber!
Harry P. Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Ahhh, humour! And jolly good humour at that, eh, govnuh?
Pete J. Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) As we are talking about cash transitions, I ran into a issue the other day and it really ticked me off. I was the co-owner of my sons car and we sold it the other day. The young man who bought it went to Navy Fed and they cut him a bank check for his loan. They decided that they needed to make the check payable to the buyer and my son. We went to our bank to deposit the check. They refused because the buyer didn't have a Wells Fargo account. So we took it to Navy Fed and they wouldn't cash it because my son didn't have a Navy Fed account. After about 15 minutes I requested to talk to the manager(ever so politely!) and after a few minutes of me getting progressively louder, they decided to cash it. Really made me nervous because I walked out of Navy Fed with over $13,000 in $100 dollar bills. I couldn't get to Wells fast enough and dump all that cash and have them cut me another bank check to send off to the lender to pay off the loan. This should have been a simple transaction, but it seems like every bank has it's own rules to prevent anyone from doing business with them that is not a account holder even on their own issued checks. Harry P. Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I've never heard of a bank refusing to accept a check from someone who doesn't have an account at that bank. That's very odd.
Joe Handley Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Signing the back of the card is the best way to provide a forger (amateur or pro) with an exemplar of your signature. That's all they need; they'll take it from there. I've never signed the back of a card. Rarely encounter any difficulty due to it. And since I'm an American, a U.S. citizen, I write checks (but only occasionally). Technically, if you guys don't sign, the store should refuse to accept the card as per the credit card company's rules. Even if you write C.I.D., See I.D., Ask for I.D., ect on the card, the cashier is supposed to refuse the card for one that is signed or another form of payment.........like cash or check, if checks are still taken at said establishments. I've signed my C.C. then added See I.D. next to the signature, but have yet to be asked for my license when the cashier is the one to swipe it.

Well, since I'm running the card through the swiper myself, and the cashier never touches it, what's the diff if it's signed or not? About the only place I can think of where I still have to hand the card to the clerk and they swipe it is Hobbytown, no place else. And at HT they have never looked to see if the card is signed.

That's very odd.You have to keep in mind that this is SoCal and I think they just kind of make the rules up as they go along. The problem was that the buyers name was on the check as a payee and it was issued to both with an "and" connector. If it had been "or" Wells would have had no problem, but processing a check of that size from another bank for someone without a known history at the bank is a problem. Navy Fed were just being jerks, because it was their cashiers check and the minute I saw the check with the "and" I knew it wasn't going to be easy!

That's why I said "should" Harry, no place does it, even though we're supposed to. If I know the customer and they have that written on their card, I don't bother asking for their I.D., but if I don't know them, I will and most of thd time it's appreciated. I have heard of people getting mad if they don't sign and get asked for I.D........... Not sure how the self swiper thing works if card companies want the cashier to check signatures and such then the stores don't have the cashiers check.......or put them at self checkouts where there is on cashier for 4 registers. Michael in Illinois Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 My bank has given up the practice of taking change, they no longer have a counting machine. I can take it to a supermarket where the machines there charge 10%. What about kids who save change in their piggy banks? Poor kids save their nickels dimes and quarters then lose 10% because banks don't want to deal with the coins.
High octane Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Change your bank Michael to a "full service" bank and they'll be able to take care of ALL your needs.
Agent G Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 What irked me today? The death of a beautiful 30 year old girl who wanted nothing more than to vacation in Las Vegas. She travelled here from Ireland and suffered a brain aneuryism. All I could see was my own daughter. 35 years into this and some things still tug at the old heart strings. G
Joe Handley Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 That's terrible G, my Mom lost her oldest Sister that way 18 years ago when she was 60, and on Christmas Day no less. Luckily she was with the rest of their family for the holiday at their youngest sister's place and they were able get EMS there, but it was too late and she was taken off life support the next day.

Tom Geiger Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 For a serious reply, I rarely carry cash, for the simple reason is I most of the times, I wont need it I carry very little cash. Why? Because when you put cash in your pocket you suddenly notice you don't have any and no clue where it went! So I use my debit card for nearly everything. That way I have a record of my transactions. Since I am consulting and have a home office, I can write off a lot of stuff for home and car expenses too. So I need records. As far as places that don't take cards in the 21st century... I go there exactly once. And when I find out they don't take cards I give them an earfull and let them know I'll never be back. I can't imagine being so business stupid. Idiots don't understand how much business they have lost over that 3% fee. They've lost much more! And I think some of the cash vs debit/credit is old school. And some of the folks that squawk the loudest that they'd never own a credit card... well, they aren't credit worthy. Recently the young guy at work, in his 30s asked me why George and I would spend cash in the cafeteria. It was beyond his understanding. Me? I was just spending off some cash I had left over from going to a model show!
Tom Geiger Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 On a positive note... nothing irked me today. Never got outta bed??
Harry P. Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Never got outta bed?? Oh, I got outta bed, wise guy! Actually, I spent part of the day installing the new garage door opener my son bought for me.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 About the only place I can think of where I still have to hand the card to the clerk and they swipe it is Hobbytown, no place else. What about sit down restraunts, or drive-thrus etc? I am sure you hand over your card more than you realize. I personally use my card FAR more than cash, BUT.......cash still comes in handy for small transactions, like vending machines, but even some of those here at work now take cards. It also comes in handy to have cash for poker night.
Harry P. Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 What about sit down restraunts, or drive-thrus etc? At McDonalds drive-thru, yes, you hand over your card. But you don''t have to sign anything.
Craig Irwin Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 I've ate at two great local restaurants this week, by myself, on my lunch hour. Both require a $10 minimum to use a card, I spent nowhere near that and my cash worked just fine.
martinfan5 Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 (edited) Some people still like using cash, some people like using plastic, some people like both, and then, some people still like using checks(cheques). Cant believe its been such a hot topic...................................................... Edited June 5, 2014 by martinfan5

I'd call the Comptroller of the Currency- whether it's a state or federally-chartered bank, the C.C. has say in how they handle money. And I agree with Nick- find a bank that isn't acting illegally or simply stupid. Charlie Larkin
