Terry Jessee Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I got an IM asking to see this old relic. I built it in 1983 and it wound up on the cover of that "other" model car magazine. It was kind of the model that got me started writing about models. It was pretty unusual at the time because no one was really doing much with weathered cars then. Everything at the time was pretty shiny, so this got some attention because of that. So here 'tis. Keep in mind that this is 30 years old. It was actually built from an MPC test shot of the kit that I got from Tom West. I got the finished chrome parts from one of the regular kits once those were released. I notice that the "weathering" has eaten the plating off some of the chrome parts. Terry
disabled modeler Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I like it!...nice weathering!...I need to learn more about weathering.
JunkPile Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Your 30 year old weathering will rival any of todays effects. Gotta love it!
1972coronet Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Terry - I still have that issue of that other magazine ; it's somewhere in storage . The only thing about the article that I was disappointed about : no mention of where you sourced the wheels and tyres (!) . In later years , I realised that they were from the AMT Chevy Van (at least the wheels were) . I am pleased that this 'relic' is still around
Danno Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 You unpacking, Ter? A lot of recycling of old builds!
Tom Geiger Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Terry, that car, your Cowboy Cadillac and the work of Joe Cavorley were very inspirational to be back in those days. Weathered models were pretty much frowned on back then. There was pretty much a bias, if it wasn't a street rod or muscle car, well it wasn't acceptable. In my early days of building weathered vehicles I was used to contest organizers pulling my cars out of the categories I chose and putting them in the "Misc Class" where they could compete against tanks and motorcycles. Yes, my weathered trucks couldn't be in the light commercial class, but street rod trucks with slicks could! We've come a long way!
kruleworld Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 i dunno why, but i like weathered cars. Yours is good (although probably old enough to consider redoing it if you think your skill has improved).
Guest Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Love your work Terry, but please don't stoop to the level of others here, it's not that other mag, it's SAE, or SA for more recen issues.
mikemopar70 Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I remember this particular model, i saw in that magazine at the time, i was in my very beginnings in car modeling... Good memories you brought back. I like to see your police cars, they're very realistic. Nice model terry!!!
Custom Hearse Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 That is a nice build Terry! I like the weathering you did on it. That must be the most broke department to have had to keep a unit so long that it is rusting out from under them!
slusher Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Very realistic weathering and very nice build..
Terry Jessee Posted December 7, 2013 Author Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) Recycling, yes, Danno. We've been in the house three months and I finally have display space again--although not nearly as much. So I'm having to decide what stays and what goes.... Dr. Cranky Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Nice, Terry. Long live dirt, gunk, and rust!
realgone58 Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I read about this one years ago too! Good to see it again, and it's holding up very well.
57peppershaker Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Hey Terry, really good to see some better pics of this. Great to see you still have it after all these years. Your article was great back then, still have the mag & it started my interest in building weathered ol' Cop cars.
