Wayne, I was in Vegas a few months later in '09 and it was still cold. Haven't been to Vegas since then. My cousin who lived there passed on, and I do some gaming from time to time at other places.

Ran over to a Portillo's last night to get food for Dad and myself and found the Target next door had piles of snow taller than my Jeep!

While I didn't shoot any pics of it, the strip mall my store used to be in was much the same way.

I LOVE Portillo's beef. That's about the only thing I miss from Illinois. People down here in FLA have no idea what an Italian beef sandwich is.

What's wrong with Portillo's Jim, as my wife and I were just there last week for lunch and goin' again next week? It's a good thing that there's not one closer to where we live. Even though their food is great, it is "heart attack" food. LOL!

Yeah Nick,

I love their burgers, O-rings.....AND! the chocolate cake is Great!!!!

My wife would argue that the chocolate cake shakes are the best, but she also said "You have to have it with a salad, so You don't feel too guilty, LOL.

That year was an abnormally cold winter here in the high desert. This year it's just now cooled off and become "normal" for winter. We're gonna get hit in the rainy season I bet.

Out here you have to find the Chicagoans and start from there. Thank goodness a new place opened just down the street. Great Italian beef sandwiches.

Wayne, I know a few people from the Chicagoland area that have moved out to Vegas. I guess none of them want to be in the restaurant business. Of course if the rent isn't a "killer" in one of the casinos, a dog/beef stand might make a good go at it?

You have to find a storefront location in a neighborhood like mine. Just off the beaten path, on a main arterial street that is visited by the locals. Then a small place will do just fine.

We have one Steak n Shake at the Southpoint for instance. It costs them boo coo bucks to be inside the casino. The trade there is phenomenal so they pay the rent easy. Not so easy unless your a well known name chain or 5 star chef.

The only thing wrong with Portillo's, Nick, is that they're not down here in FLA. I really miss it. I think my most favorite location was on Rt 59 in Naperville. We use to hit the one on Ogden in Naperville at least once a week during my working days. A few years ago we were in Lisle for a ViêtNow convention and we took home 5 lbs of frozen solid meat/gravy and a couple loaves of bread. It was still frozen when we got back home.

The Portillo's closest to me is so busy at lunch, they have cops directing traffic every day in front of the restaurant from about 11:30 to 1:30 or so. It's a really busy six-lane main drag, so the cops have to stop traffic every so often to let all the cars that are lined up and waiting to enter and exit the Portillo's parking lot do so. There's no other restaurant or store or anything along that stretch of road that gets that... the closest to it is that the cops have to direct traffic at the entrance to Best Buy, but only for a day or two before Christmas.

I can't even imagine how much that one single Portillo's location makes every day during the lunch rush.

The one near my office in Tempe is in a mall parking lot at the corner of two major 6 lane streets, went there for lunch last week and it was packed...the parking lot seems a bit small for the size of the restaurant--even have a drive through crammed in there...

There's one in Tempe ? Who knew ? I'll be going there soon. I love the combo beef and sausage sandwich. I will just not eat anything the next day ! : )

Kill the ground Hog! and Tuesday night were going to get hit with almost 10 more inches of the white BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH! you can keep it up there Harry, if you could?

I don't think I've ever seen a Portillo's that isn't busy during lunch or dinner. Even last night the St. Charles one had to have at least a half dozen cars in the lot after 9pm and it was a Sunday night! Honestly, if I ever move out of the Chicagoland area, Portillo's is likely the only thing around here I'd miss too!

Trust me, we don't want any more either! There is some talk that we've nearly had as much this winter as some of the worst winter around here have dumped on us in years past........just we haven't had it all in one shot like before :P

Jim,

You can order the Chicago favorites online if you miss them that much, I know I have! ;)

The best part of going back to Chicago is the food!

POOOOR Dick Portillo, you'd think that he'd be drivin' a Maserati, or some other expensive exotic car, but no his daily driver is a Brinks truck as all his locations are "gold mines." I've seen the drive-thru lanes filled with so many vehicles that they wrapped around the building. Sometimes if you don't have reservations at "prime time" you'll end up eating in your car at lunch time. And I've seen people with "carry outs" carrying boxes and large (shopping) bags, filled with that "heart attack" food. I give that man (Dick Portillo) a LOT of credit as he sure knows what he's doin', and it all started with a hot dog wagon. There was a time in '09 where I went to Portillo's everyday, five days a week for a month straight.

Friggin snow! My consulting gig got cancelled for today. No show, no dough!

It's sleeting here, and getting worse as it goes. When I got up at 5am, it was all rain with an occasional ice crystal, but now the tops of the cars are covered. It's colder than they predicted last night and now that everything is wet I fear it will all be freezing solid.

News flash- it's done sleeting and has turned to snow, already covering my deck and the skylight in my kitchen.

Oh well, I guess I'll hit the model room. It's warm and dry there.

Hey Harry, you think they would mind if we went ground hog hunting (phil) Any way with all the lights they use up there when they pull him out, he's going to see his shadow but then again it's still six weeks of winter by my callender's
