I useally don't post my resto's here and just show the finish project, but since I'm waiting for parts for this from The Modelhaus, I thought what the heck and I always forget to take a picture of the before car. I'm not sure if this is an AMT or SMP, all that's on the chassis is "Made in USA". I think I'll paint this either a light metallic green or blue with matching interior. When I'm all done, some lucky person can have the "Continental Kit" extension.

The body is in real nice shape with a brush painted blue 2 tone. The interior only needs to be stripped and the steering wheel replaced.

Any suggestions.

I have the same question. I have been working on one like it seems forever. I cannot decide on a color combo. I have the bodywork done, and everything to do the build.

What I started with.

Bodywork is done. I have 2-63 convertibles to go with it.

Al,

Your work is so exquisite. Maybe seeing what you do with one will give me the motivation.

Cool..never seen a 4dr Corvair kit.

I have not seen a 4dr kit either. l know it will be a sweet build when you finish it Al. I am a big fan of your work...

Thanks guys. I just started taking it apart and I have to take a shower from the dirt in this model and it also was filled with dead spiders. The best thing is nothing was glued. I'll post pictures tomorrow before it goes into the Purple Power for stripping.

Stay tuned.

The only body style available for the Corvair in 1960 was the 4-door sedan, from what I remember. I've been keeping an eye open for one of those and a 1960 Comet, which has a lot of nice styling queues.

Corvairs also had a somewhat more restricted color palette than the big Chevy, so with that in mind...

A few years ago when I sort of had a little disposable income, I almost bought a 1960 Corvair. It was Royal Blue with the blue interior. It's a color that doesn't have a good match in any of the store touch-up or hobby paint, although the Tamiya Dark Blue Metallic spray will get you in the ballpark.

The blue interior can be best simulated using Model Master Chrysler Engine Blue.

Another scheme that I've seen on a couple of these is a Tasco Turquoise roof over Ermine White. Only the very top panel is a different color. A turquoise interior is what goes with this.

Cool. I wonder if you could combine the body and interior with AMT's 69 for a full detail build.

Good luck with it! I also rebuilt an unpainted '60 gluebomb and painted it light metallic green; nice kit. Only problem is that the lower rear pan doesn't fit well at the sides, but a little scrap plastic and filing should fix that. Also remember the rear windows only roll down 3/4 of the way, so you'll need some clear acetate for them.

There were 3 versions of a 2 door coupe for the '60 model year. At first, there were the bare-bones 500 model and a more nicely trimmed 700 model. In January 1960, the 900 Monza series was introduced, and it came w/ bucket seats and other upgraded trim & badging. It was soon after known simply as the Monza, and quickly became quite popular.

The interiors of the '60-'64s had very little in common w/ the later '65-'69 series. Dashboards were completely different, and the seat patterns and door panels changed some for each model year.

Those changes are well documented @ various on-line sources such as (www.Clark'sCorvair.com) - it has a wealth of info and photos of almost everything to do w/ Corvairs, esp interiors, as they manufacturer complete interiors for each model Corvair ever made. It's also an excellent resource for all of the trim and mechanical parts that made up each Corvair model from '60-'69. Clarks' has both an on-line catalog and a very thick print version.

Being a 1960-It's an AMT/SMP kit. There would be both names on the original box.

I've have an old glue bomb 1961 Corvair , got all the replacement parts from Modelhaus -even the rear splash pan.

Had to order parts for a 1963 but as near as I can tell they are right for the earlier models also.

Wow Ron! I have your car's brother!

I also have a nice '61 or '62, the one that has the option to build either a hardtop or convertible. The only issue is that someone drilled holes down the center of the hood, right on a body crease. So I need a scrap body with a good rear hood.

I have the first gen Corvair kits on my grail list..the only Corvair models I have are 2nd gen ones---the AMT 65, '67, and a couple of the last reissue of the '69s. I do have a Modelhaus resin 4dr ht body and a TMR resin convertible body.

Rob, I got this one on ebay for $24.00. It took 6 day of bidding, but I think I did good.

Thank you for all the great reference material and nice comments. Here's a couple of pictures after only 4 hours in Purple Power. This stuff is great!!! Chrome came today and all I need is to get the paint. This is going to be a fast restoration.

Tom, You probably have an AMT '61 Corvair, as that one had a separate hardtop, which was not correct for a replica stock, because in 1961, the 2-door Corvair was a pillared coupe, which was done as a 1962 kit. The convertible had not yet been introduced, and AMT did that one as a kit in 1963.

As I mentioned, here's my restored '60 sedan and phantom '61 convertible Corvairs:

The phantom '61 also has a phantom column shift - back in the late '70s I didn't know the lever was on the dashboard.
