ToyLvr Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Al: I'm definitely loving this project!!! Can't wait to see the finished version. The first car that I can remember riding in was my Dad's '60 Corvair 4-door. Red, with gray interior ("fabric" inserts, similar material to the decals in the recent '57 Ford kit).
charlie8575 Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 $24? Boy, you got lucky. I guess I'll have to keep trying. Charlie Larkin
lambrakos Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Looks like another great resto is comming our way. Keep up the good work Al. Anxiously waiting to see your choice of color and your trademark great finish.
Porscheman Posted December 15, 2013 Author Posted December 15, 2013 (edited) Once again thank you for the nice comments and Chris your build on the conv and 4 door are very nice. All the stripping is done and I researched and found that Tuxedo Black was the rarest color for the 1960 Corvair, with a black and off white interior. Chrome is here and I lightly tinted the windows and going to the LHS tomorrow for the paint. I did do the BMF for the Corvair emblems before the black and clear go on. Ace-Garageguy Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Great find, and a fine save shaping up.
charlie8575 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 'Vairs look good in black. Is the interior similar to the black-and-white check pattern in the Impalas, Al? Charlie Larkin
slusher Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Looking forward to more Al. Black sounds great..
250 Testa Rossa Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 This is going to be even prettier than my full-size Corvair!
Porscheman Posted December 16, 2013 Author Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) I painted the body and interior this morning. The body has 2 coats of Testors Tuxedo Black Lacquer and 3 coats of Wet Look Clear and the interior was painted Testors Wimbledon White Lacquer. I'm using the seat decals from Revell's 57 Ford for the seat insert and door panels. BMF will be finished this afternoon. Al Edited December 16, 2013 by Porscheman
Tom Geiger Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I saw Al's Corvair in person on Saturday before he painted it. It looked like the above photo. The original builder did a two tone, a color and bare plastic. The visible plastic toned while paint protected the rest of the plastic resulting in this interesting two tone. I told Al just to put some clear on it! The black looks good Al!
slusher Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Great looking paint Al and black is not easy to get right. Real nice work so far...
Porscheman Posted December 18, 2013 Author Posted December 18, 2013 Well it's almost done, just some BMF, interior, panel line touch ups and hubcap installs. All in all I think it's going pretty good. A project like this usually takes me 1 or 2 days, but since I did this on Workbench it took me longer to take the pictures. Let me know how it looks so far. Al
peekay Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Looking great Al. I love the early Corvairs.
charlie8575 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Fantastic, Al. This is one car I really wish either AMT would find (or simply make new molds) for, or that a caster would start doing. Charlie Larkin
Ramfins59 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Al, that is looking just great. You've got another fine model saved and almost done.
ChrisBcritter Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 If you really want to get detailed, you can remove a little of the foil next to the windshield and back window to simulate the rubber gaskets around the glass, since it's already black underneath. Your last photo reminded me that AMT made a mistake - five-lug wheels (should be four-lug).
Porscheman Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 All done and restored. I think it looks good in black with the white, grey and black interior. This was a real pleasure bringing this Corvair back to its original form. The only things I'm not happy with are the whitewalls (original on the model, no paint would stick well and I tried them all and the tail lights are pointed insead of flat, these came on the model. Thank for the nice comments, hope you enjoyed my Corvair. Al
Rob Hall Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 That turned out really sharp..like the color choices.

Thanks Mike the idea of using the interior decal from Revell's 57 Ford. It work out great. Thanks Rob. Your car should there today or tomorrow. Al
Ron Hamilton Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Al, I really enjoyed your '60 Corvair. I may do mine in Roman Red to go with my '60 Impala convertible.
slusher Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Sharp build Al some great work on this project. I really enjoyed watching your progress...
