all I can think of is a pole dancer! LOL! My club is having this as a themed build for the July show. What do you think of as exotic cars? Dusenberg, Cord, Auburn, Maseratti, Porsche?

Open for input but might build a pole dancer car for a joke as well!

First off just to save you some time Dussenberg,Cord, and Auburn were all American beauties. If you want to do something Vintage and Exotic I would go for something like an Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, and the old Ferrari's and Lambo's. If your going for something new you have a pretty big field, anything not made in the USA and at least a little sporty. To me an Exotic is not made in ones country and is at least a little sporty. As for the dancer your wanting I believe there is a company that makes those "type" of figures in 1/24th, the name of the site slips my mind right now.

To me an exotic is "rare" and "different". Cord Dusenberg Auburn … yes But those are "vintage" or "classic" to me. Think Tucker for Exotic. IMHO true exotics started are sports cars as well. Think of how the 300SL stood out. Jaguar C and D type. Or more modern Lamborghini and Ferrari offers.

If you like modern cars there are lots to chose from. If you like more classics or vintage cars think 300SL, Jag C or D, Aston Martin DB1, 4 or 5, AC Cobra, etc.

Hope that helps

oh yeah… I think Jimmy Flintstone / Flintbone makes a 1/24 pole dancer figure…. and I think that would be hilarious. Or maybe a "stage on wheels" hehehe

I always thought exotic was foreign. Even a new Ferrari or Lamborghini would be exotic in my mind.

Internet definition. I was curious now. (Lol. Ignore the text from my dad, what a time for a screenshot)

Exotic to me is something built from the eighties to now that is fast , foreign and built in limited numbers .

Auburn , Cord and Dusenberg are coach built not the same but they have way more class.

A Porsche 962 road car is exotic.

A Porsche 962 road car that has been rebodied is also exotic.

Which is more exotic? Up for discussion.

Exotic is anything I cannot afford...so a VW Jetta is an exotic car LOL. Seriously, there are American exotics as well. Shelby cars are exotic. Ford GTs would be exotic. Certain Corvettes can be exotic. Would a Tesla be an exotic?

So , based off of this definition , a dealer-modified car would qualify ; Motion's Phase III 'series' comes to mind . Then there's the Cobra AC and the 260 in early models , and finally the 427 and 428 engines .

"Exotic" is a twenty dollar term for "foreign" . For that matter , a 1968 Hemi Charger R/T would be "exotic" in , say , Germany .

...a but then so would some of the cars... ;-P

Seriously, I've been interested in the definition since I got into car modelling and discovered you guys...

I don't think we use the word "exotic" to describe a kind of car much on this side of the pond. From reading here over the years, it seems that the US definition of exotic is basically "European sports car" plus a few other bits and pieces.

"Supercar" we definitely use around here, and it means the elite of sports and GT cars. A hardcore definition would only include things like the Veyron, F12, Aventadors, Sesto Elemento, P1, LaFerrari, 918 -- and probably not even encompass the "regular" Gallardo, 911, R8 or 458. Top Gear's definition would include those as well.

But Exotics seem to include much more than Supercars -- eg European Classics like XK120s, Maserati 3500s and 250SWBs.

Would you guys class a Hennessy Venom as an exotic, or a Ford GT (they're certainly Supercars in my book)? What about a Viper SRT or Corvette Stingray? A CTS-V wagon?

bestest,

M.

"Exotic" cars don't have a nationality or an era to them.Pretty much any car was exotic at the dawn of the 20th century because cars were such a new item, rarely seen, and few people could afford them.As the the availability of lower priced cars expanded the market it was the fancier, higher priced cars that became the "exotic" car. These cars often had distinguishing mechanical features or bodywork that set them apart from the cheaper cars. That still holds true today although many low priced current cars have features on them (fuel injection, overhead cams, independent suspensions, super or turbo charging, leather seats, aluminum or carbon fiber bodywork, and high power audio systems) that were considered exotic (or unavailable) just 30 or 40 years ago.

I goggle imaged it and nothing but 6 and 7 figure foreign cars came popping up. I think its above the norm... WAYYYYYYY ABOVE the norm.

If you look at "exotic car" dealerships, you'll see Corvettes, Vipers, Ford GT's, Cadillac CTS-V's, Shelby Mustangs, high-end Camaros, etc...

But as a model car category, I'd lean towards the typical Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi R8,

IMHO, I don't think that Corvettes, Vipers, Shelby Mustangs, and Camaros are priced high enough to fall into the exotic category.

I agree. Some Vettes and Vipers walk the line, bu don't quite fall into the category, IMHO.
