Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I started thus just before Christmas. I have been planning this build in my head for years and finally pulled the trigger. I'm quite a ways on so I'll post pics from start to where it is now.
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 To age the wood I mixed black and white craft paint to make light gray. Then I thinned it a lot. I wiped the paint on the wood with a sponge, or paper towel or etc. and let it dry. I wanted each piece to look unique. This made the wood look aged. Then I uses variouis shades of black, charcoal and brown pastel chalk to dirty it up some more. .
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 I bought basswood siding from Urecht supply and aged the inside, while painting the outside with flat red thinned craft paint. THen I glues it on the framing with wood glue. Candles for weight
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 making progress. The trim is also painted craft paint white. All the wood it balsa except the siding. I like the way the balsa is soft and takes the stain well.
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) This is siting on the wooden base. I used charcoal pastel chalk to dirt up the outside of the garage. Most of the weathering on this project is from pastel chalk. I also started making boxes and other bits to put around the garage, Edited February 18, 2014 by Jeff Johnston
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Starting to come together inside.
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) outside landscaping. Next time I think I'll make the lawn less lush lol. I'll try to junk it up a bit. Edited February 18, 2014 by Jeff Johnston
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 This is where it is now. I still feel like I need more junk so I'l be gathering and adding bits for a while I think; don't forget the beer
Jeff Johnston Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 and a junk car for the yard... I made the tarps from blue tissue paper painted with white glue.water mix.
Sixties Sam Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Wow! That looks really good, Jeff! Great details and weathering. The tarps look real! Sam
kennb Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 You need a little friggy for the beer,,,,can't drink it warm, unless you are a Brit. American Restoration did a beer cooler in an old gas pump a while back,,,,,,
Matt T. Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Neato! I've had a similar idea rattling around inside my head for years too, Jeff. Very nicely done. I'll be checking this out at NNL East!
charlie8575 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Even if it's still WIP in a week, Jeff, bring it on down to MassCar. I think it'll be well-recieved. Nice work. Charlie Larkin
