gtx6970 Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Well, ever buy something with no regards to the boxes actual contents. just thought the box art was cool I've tried to get a few over the years but so far have failed.
Greg Myers Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) Hard to say. Can't think of any right off. Guess it would have to be a big "fail" or a really great surprise, thinking nothing much would come out of the box. Then again with all the hype in the model media it would seem hard to find something you weren't familiar with. Through the years one becomes wary of the "Palmer" type kits and is more prone to look the kit over very closely. Edited February 22, 2014 by Greg Myers
slusher Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I have bought a few for the box art and built them to match it...
crazyjim Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Never have. When the build is done the box goes in the garbage.
Greg Myers Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I have bought a few for the box art and built them to match it... Box art builds are great on the older kits. I really like them. Especially the "side" art, the not often looked at pictures on the side of the box.
Greg Myers Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Never have. When the build is done the box goes in the garbage. But we're talking about "before" you build it, before you open it, before you buy it.
ToyLvr Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 AMT "Pepper Shaker" '57 Chevy. The contents are the same old AMT '57 Chevy, but I loved the box art. Several years ago I attended a local model car swap meet where I observed a fellow buying all sorts of old kits and even empty boxes. I later found out that he intended to decorate one wall of his new "man cave" with nothing but model boxes.
Furiousgeorge Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 When I was a kid many years ago, that's how I decided on what kits to buy. The most awesome box won. I'm a bit wiser now (not a whole lot though!), but the box is still what'll draw my eye first. They gotta sell the crappy kits somehow, so throw a great picture or scene on the box and watch them go.
pharoah Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Years ago box art would have a lot to do with me buying a kit. now,I want to have an idea what's in there before I pay.
Quick GMC Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I have NOT bought a model solely because of the box art. I am trying to get over that though. The Motor City Muscle box for the BOSS 429 makes me want to puke, but I like what's inside.
gtx6970 Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 I've tried a couple times to get one of the Nomads Casey posted as well as some old AMT , MPC kits stricktly for the box art. I already have a Nomad in the stash that will get built, But I like the box art on the one above as well as some of the old AMT Corvette kits done in a similar style . Again, I could care less of the contents ,( if it even it has any ). I just the like the box art Same goes for some of the old 1969-70 Johan cartoon art boxes for the 1970 GTX as an example.
martinfan5 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Nope, that would be a waste of money, whats in the box is more important then whats on the cover
slusher Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 When we was kids and young teens the box art sold the model..

johnbuzzed Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 In the past I have bought kits as a result of the box art, but not specifically for the box art. The first issues of AMT's 55 Nomad and Revell's 55 BelAir are two standouts; I know there were others but who can remember everything from all those years ago?
PARTSMARTY Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 NEVER-I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BOX ART-I'VE BEEN BUILDING FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS.I JUST CARE ABOUT THE MODEL INSIDE-NOTHING ELSE.
Roncla Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I can't say I have but the box art will always grab my attention.
Tom Geiger Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 This one! I fell in love with the Hollingsworth Nomad when I first saw the box as a kid. Of course we didn't argue that the decals weren't even in the box to build that car. And we all know the build quality of enclosed kit! So I wasn't successful in producing a satisfactory model from the contents. I'd see the box again the next year, and reason that I was a year older, and up to the build. And no, I didn't get it built again. Going back at GSL about 14 years ago I met Bob Paeth who was involved with the release of this kit at Revell in 1968. He gave me the whole inside story about the box art and really brought the story alive for me. As a kid buying that box, little did I know one day I'd know someone involved with it's production. And I had Bob sign the box for me, lower right corner. Still my favorite box. And I'm sorry that Danbury Mint isn't going to produce the Hollingsworth Nomad in diecast. That was my one shot at actually getting the car on the box!
Harry P. Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 NEVER-I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BOX ART-I'VE BEEN BUILDING FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS.I JUST CARE ABOUT THE MODEL INSIDE-NOTHING ELSE. Ditto. I'm not paying for the box art. I'm paying for what's inside the box. They can put anything on the box. A photo. An illustation. A highly airbrushed photo of the... ahem..."actual model." An "artist's rendition" of what's in the box. The box art may accurately reflect what's actually in the box, but too often it has nothing to do with what you just spent your money on.

With your graphic design background you at least have to admire the box art!
