The essence of the problem is how GM management dealt with the situation and not the fact that poor-quality parts were involved. That happens in any manufacturing environment and all automakers have had their problems and recalls in the past. Hopefully, our society will learn from this how to correctly handle such matters so that no one is killed as a result of our current corporate, throw-you-under-the-bus, bottom-line numbers mentality. Greed kills.

By the way, Rick, popular does not equal best, better or even good.

Honda and Nissan had a big recall today on Japanese made air bags.

Interesting article in the automotive press that likened the recall, no incidents yet but bags can fail due to moisture contamination, to mass hysteria caused by the massive GM recall.......so has this become a issue bigger than the GM recall??? Is it now going to cause every part failure become a recall??? Seems like a slippery slope of recalls, fines, lawyers, repeat.......

Sounds like Honda and Nissan are doing the...right...thing. No incidents yet, but a potential problem has been identified. Better to fix it BEFORE there's a fatality, eh??

Corporate foot dragging and hoping nobody would notice (like a 3-year old child) AFTER the problem was identified is the central issue with GM's problem.

Even with the recall issues Chevrolet is still a top seller according to reports in the sunday paper. also GM has many cars getting J.D.Powers awards this year. Even the resale of used GM cars have not been affected by the recall's!

lots of people buy cigarettes also

Not justifying putting cheaply made parts in automobiles, but had not Ralph Nadar come up with exaggerated claims of bad handling Corvairs in the older swing axle (which was soon changed to a better design, but Nadar kept harping on it), the corporate culture may not have developed as it has regarding keeping quite about crappy unsafe bits or keeping quite about same. Also GM changed the design quite aways back on the ignition switch, but never changed it's part number which would be much like a company changing a print spec and not adding a new rev number alerting the production team of the change. Now GM has to eat that cost in the recall by having to change perfectly good ignition switches because they do not know which are bad and which are good. My 2010 GM car may have a perfectly fine part, but you would never know unless one took apart the switch to see inside...so I get a new switch for my trucklet whether it needs it or not.

Blame Ralph nader! You are kidding right? This is exactly the type of corporate behavior that Nader was investigating back in the 60s. Nothing has changed at GM. It wasn't the handling of Corvairs as much as the way GM was ignoring the problem. They are still sweeeping issues under the rug.

I'd believe Nader before I'd believe any corporate management...sweeping issues under the rug and other CYA moves is SOP in corporate America.

Just out of curiosity, since Ralph Nader was brought up; How many on here has read Unsafe At Any Speed? If you haven't, it's an interesting read. Some of it is a bit of bunk, even somewhat amusing at times. There is plenty in there that has merit, though.

I read it probably 30 years ago, about the same time I read John Z Delorean's book...interesting read IIRC.

I hadn't heard that one. That's another recall? Made public today?

Sheesh...

Actually, I believe it was a "stop sell" order from the GM brass. They're doing this just stopping short of a recall.

On and on it goes...I wonder if the 2015s will be pre-recalled before they go on sale. :(

At this point, maybe not a bad idea!

This ongoing GM saga is just amazing. And not in a good way. It's mind-boggling how many different recalls they've issued this year. This is going to appear in the history books one day.

New GM dealership SOP:

Thanks for buying GM. Here is your owner's manual, here are your keys... and here is your recall notice.

Maybe they can start doing what they did with the Copper-Cooled Chevrolets in 1923. Most of those never left the factory; they went straight to the scrapper...

I live in Youngstown, just miles from Lordstown, Ohio where Cruzes are built. I guess the local news reported the "stop sell" has been lifted already. Who knows ?? Its a mess, Yet their sales are up ?

NBC was reporting it as a 'sales stop' and not a recall as they didn't have a fix for a recall and didn't know where they were going to get 700,00 plus new air bags. Can't issue a recall if you have no fix in place.

A young girl down the street bought her first new car about a month ago.....a Cruze. Saw her a the post office and asked her about the 'recall'. She didn't know what a recall was or had heard that GM was having a lot of them. But ask about her new phone!!!! And thus the continued sales. PRAY GM that these customers will continue to surf, text, talk and instagram lunch on their phones but ignore real world issues.

The GM defense attorneys also love it because they can blame the cell phone for all or part of the accident induced by the faulty parts.

I've heard it said that: "A person is smart; people are stupid." I don't know what kind of news coverage this latest incident got, but in my opinion, it should get as much as possible, even more so than the situations overseas. This is an American corporation that doesn't seem to care about the lives of it's customers/consumers and it should be beaten over the head with that info constantly until something substantial, tangible and positive is done for their customers, who are taxpaying American citizens.

now its the pick-up's turn.

Yep. Three more recalls today!

From USA Today:

General Motors announced three more recalls on Friday (June 27) -- on top of the stop-sale order and then recall of the Chevy Cruze late Thursday.

Earlier this week GM stopped the sale of 2013 and 2014 Cruze sedans while it tracked down which ones got a potentially faulty driver-side airbag inflator that could explode and send metal bits flying -- then last night (June 26) recalled 29,019 of them in the U.S. and 4,066 in Canada.

On Friday (June 27) GM announced three more recalls for a total of more than 450,000 vehicles worldwide. The company now has issued 48 recalls for more than 20 million vehicles this year (2014) in the wake of the recall of 2.6 million smalls cars in February and March for a deadly iginition switch defect.

The largest of the three (today) covers 392,459 its latest-generation full-size pickups and SUVs in the U.S., 53,607 in Canada and 20,874 that were exported elsewhere. Affected are four-wheel drive models of the 2014 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and the 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

The problem is that the transfer case in the trucks may electronically switch itself into neutral without action by the driver, according to GM. If it happens on the road the wheels lose power. If the truck is stopped or parked and brakes are not applied or the parking brake is off the truck could roll away.

Also recalled (today) for a potentially faulty windshield wiper are 4,794 of the 2013 and 2014 model Chevrolet Caprice police cars and 2014 Chevrolet SS sport sedans in the U.S. The mechanically related performance cars are made by GM's Holden unit in Australia. The problem, says GM, is that a bad wiper module can lead to the wiper motor gear teeth being stripped and the wipers not working. GM knows of no related crashed or injuries. Dealers will inspect and replace the wiper module.

The third recall (today) is to replace the rear shock absorbers in 1,939 U.S. Chevy Corvettes from the 2014 model year that have the FE1 or FE3 suspension. GM says that a possible bad weld in the rear shocks could lead to a fracture and/or could reduce the shocks' service life. Also included are 33 2014 Corvettes in Canada and 82 that were exported. GM says it knows of no related crashes or injuries.

UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE.

It's like a bad dream where you have to count the grains of sand in a bucket.......and you loose count with a cup to go.....it just never ends!!!

My step Mom pulled into my drive this morning....she never stops by without calling. Went out and she said her Buick was 'going ding ding'.

Had a brake error on dash lit. Master cylinder was dry. Looked under car and saw most of the brake fluid. Yet to check to see if 2005 Builck's have a recall for rusty brake lines.......it had rotted clean off at the chassis.......
