slusher Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Beautiful weekend and with two nights of frost means no more grass until spring. Watched sports all weekend but my Cubs lost...
slusher Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Carl that last line was the highest praise I could get, Thank you. Hopefully you made it to the North Rim of the Canyon 'cause it's a whole different world. Here's my South West Cliche Picture. I took it ~15' from where I'm sitting - Talk about LUCKY! You are great with a camera Ed. I never made it to the north rim but i plan on coming back some day...
Crazy Ed Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 You are great with a camera Ed. I never made it to the north rim but i plan on coming back some day...Thank You Carl. If you go to the North Rim stay there for a couple of days and wander around. Pine trees and the only crowds are when the Tour Busses from Vegas dump their loads and in a couple of hours haul'em off. It's almost funny to watch - National Lampoon's Vacation on a Commercial level!

crazyjim Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Not much. Ocala Pumpkin Run is this weekend and FAST will be doing a model display/contest. We get to start Thursday afternoon and end Sunday afternoon. When that's over, I need to pressure wash the shop (20 x 40 steel building). Then get ready for Veterans Day.

sheena Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 From my favorite singer" But even if the stars and moon collide,I never want you back into my life, you can take your words and all your lies....
High octane Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I went to the movies with my "better half" and we saw The Bridge of Spies. If one pays attention, there are lots of mid 50-late 50's cars in that movie.
Crazy Ed Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 The Clouds parted for the Morning Planet Pic. Compare this to the one from Sunday.
Agent G Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Last day of training. We've been running the halls of the now closed Riviera practicing "high risk" search warrant entries and building searches. It's been bitter sweet watching the demise of that grand old casino resort. She was the third largest resort in the world when she opened. Last year she was 13th largest on the Las Vegas strip. At least I can say I was there and experienced the place in all her glory as well as at the end of the line. Then Now (not my photos) G

Tom Geiger Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Change can be sad! This summer I bid on an eBay lot for 200 New Jersey postcards from the 1900-30s and was surprised when I got it super cheap! In there I found at least 50 from Atlantic City, proudly displaying the grand old hotels from the heyday as the premiere shore resort. That got me to researching the various properties and I found that some of the most grandiose hotels were just plowed under when the city got casino approvals back in the late 1970s. Others were turned into casinos and survive, while others were built around with modern facades and such. There is a website that lists all the old hotels and tells their fate. My grandparents used to stay at a place with broad porches four properties from the water. It was torn down to make a parking lot. And all those old streets full of big hotels leading up to the water are now all service alleys between casinos! Frickin progress!

If hadn't been for your original picture I would not have known what I was looking at. Thank You for posting these pictures and educating me. Unfortunately since then we've had cloudy rainy conditions so I've not been able to keep track. Hopefully on the other dates you've listed I'll be able to see them again. Crazy Ed Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Glad you got to see what's going on out there Peter and happy you got to enjoy the scene.
unclescott58 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Work pleased me today. I work as a substitute para in the education field. And this fall I've had work one-on-one with one particular 2nd grader (autistic), a lot. Who is a royal pain in the you know what! I again had to work with him today. Though he still will not cooperate with me 99.9% of the time. We noticed he seems to readily come to me if he's having a problem. He may act like he doesn't like me. But, he seems to trust me. And that is a nice little brake through. It just goes to show. You sometimes never know the impact you maybe having on a kid. And you can never give up on a kid. No matter how hopeless it seems at the time.At the same time, I'm glad I will not have work with him a least on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Both days I'll be working with high schoolers. An age group I love working with. And with the amount of time I've been in the business, have seen several kids make big changes over the years. Mostly for better. Yet when I'm needed, I will not turn down an assignment to work with my pain in the you know what, 2nd grader. It maybe hard. But, I do want see what's best for the kid.One other work related thing. And this was slightly humorous. This last Wedensday I was at a high school working with several kids I've been working with for many years now. The question came up, when did I start working with some of them? One kid who is in 9th grade now, I knew for sure I've been working with him since he was in 3rd grade. But, there was a girl in that class, who insisted that I've worked with her longer than with any of the others. She might be right. I can not remember. I kind of doubt it. But, that doesn't matter. She insists that I've known her longest of any of her classmates, and that's that! Okay....? Maybe she is right. I could have worked with her as early as her being in the 1st grade. I have been working as a para that long now!
Tom Geiger Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 (edited) That's nice work Scott! Sometimes hard but rewarding in the end. I've never had that experience, but back when I was a junior and senior in high school, I was invited to work with a school stamp club for fourth and fifth graders. I went to each meeting and taught them how to identify and handle stamps, but most important I had them all pick a subject and develop an exhibit around those stamps. We put together album pages of their own design and had a show that the entire school attended at the end of each season. A funny thing happened... several of the participants school grades went up! Especially in the reading and writing areas. It seemed that we motivated them through stamps to work harder to keep up with the club. I got a certificate of recognition from the school and a small bit in the local paper. It was rewarding to have effected these kids in a positive way.The interesting part was that for years after, rather tall young guys would call out to me in stores and restaurants and introduce themselves as being one of the kids in my stamp clubs. It was touching that they remembered me and wanted to say hello! Edited October 31, 2015 by Tom Geiger
