mrindy77 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Ironic how a funny man can make so many people happy and be so unhappy on the inside.
Petetrucker07 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Most comedians struggle with depression. Its a sad fact, and too many great 1s have taken their own lives because it.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) Besides being a top-notch comedian, he took cinematic risks (not always well accepted) to show a very introspective and human side, exploring life, relationships, the hereafter, and even the rapidly blurring line between artificial-intelligence-endowed robots and humanity. Carpe diem, Robin. Nanu nanu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veYR3ZC9wMQ. Edited August 12, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy

A little surreal. Such a shame.

slusher Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 So Sad and a loss of a talented man. I love Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning Vietnam.
southpier Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 too bad. so many successes. hard to front what people have come to expect and not be allowed to show the real person. Mork signing off ...
unclescott58 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 As we all know by now, this is no hoax. Robin Williams is gone. Very, very sad. I don't know what more to say. Scott
Ramfins59 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 What a shame to lose such a talented person. Condolences to his family and friends. We will miss his humor.
Draggon Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Sad that 12-step was not enough to overcome his inner battle. Depression can be suffocating, and self-medicating is not the answer.
Jantrix Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 This is just heart breaking. I've always been a fan of his work. He was one of a kind. "O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done"
JTalmage Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 So sad... depression is a terrible thing. I feel like I fight it myself sometimes.
1972coronet Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Awakenings* is my favourite film with him as its main star . *A film from c.1990 whose topic is the L-Dopa experiments .
Tom Geiger Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 I've just come across this thread. I've been bummed ever since I read about it last evening, and that's all that's been on the news and talk shows all day. I always loved Robin Williams. One of my favorite moments was in "Moscow on the Hudson" where he played a Russian guy who had come to America. My favorite scene was when he went to the supermarket and discovered the coffee aisle. Funny stuff. We actually got to meet him a long time ago. Back when I worked for large company number one, in the days of excess, they'd throw a huge family day event and hire celebrities and such to emcee the day. One year it was Robin Williams and I believe we have a photo of him and my daughter somewhere.
sjordan2 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) Since my youth, the two most side-splitting comedians i"ve ever seen were Jonathan Winters and Robin Williams. Both true geniuses, with similar demons, and evidently Winters was an idol to Williams. Right now, I don't see an equal anywhere in sight. The only time I ever saw Bob Hope at a loss for words was when both of them were on the Carson show, and Hope sat back and just let him run with it. Edited August 12, 2014 by sjordan2
rmvw guy Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Sad news, R.I.P. Robin. One film not mentioned so far "R.V." which I thought was hilarious. Traveling across America in a R.V. sort of like "National Lampoon's Vacation".
JTalmage Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 YES. RV was great! golden shower of sadness... hahaha
Pete J. Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 The man was definitely a genius! He was in so many films, it is stunning. As a tribute I thought I would throw some up here and see how many you may have not thought of: Popeye, The Survivors, Moscow on the Hudson, Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Cadillac Man, Awakenings, Aladdin(the genie), Mrs. Doubtfire, Being Human, Jumanji, To Wong Foo, Thanks for everything, Jack, The Birdcage, Good Will Hunting, Flubber, Patch Adams, Bicentennial Man, Night at the Museum, Hook, The Butler. And these are just some of the hits. The mans body of work will live forever. Good Morning Vietnam was far and away my favorite. He really nailed the insanity that was southeast Asia. After seeing the outpouring on all the different social media sights, I wonder if he had known how much he is loved by so many, would he have taken his life. Apparently, he hung himself. That seems to me like he was punishing himself. Horrible way to die, and a sad end to a life that brought light to so many people. I will miss him!
Agent G Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 His performance in "Good Morning Vietnam" was so brilliant on so many levels it defies description. Pete you are so correct, he portrayed the absurdity of the situation there in a way that everyone could relate to. That movie brought it home for me in a way "Full Metal Jacket" or "The Boys in Company C" never did. G
Harry P. Posted August 12, 2014 Author Posted August 12, 2014 I know RW was known as a comic genius... and he absolutely was. Whether it was stand-up, comedic acting, impressions... you name it, he was great at it. But the thing that most impresses me about his talent is the fact that he could play a dead serious part as well as a comedic part. I don't remember the name of the movie... I saw it many years ago, sorry... the name escapes me... but he played a guy who worked at the local pharmacy's photo counter. He played sort of a creepy yet sympathetic character. He was freaking brilliant in the role. About as far from "Robin Williams" as you can possibly get... but he nailed it. I'm sure someone here knows the movie I mean... please post the title.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) "One Hour Photo" ? Edited August 12, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
Harry P. Posted August 12, 2014 Author Posted August 12, 2014 Yes! That's it. He was amazing in that.
twopaws Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Godspeed to one of my favorites of all time. He and J. Winter on the same stage, what a hoot that must have been. Want to see a lite side of him, it's worth the time, his YouTube of Elmer Fudd singing Bruce Sprinsteens Riding in my Car. Rest well Fisher King.

I heard this on my drive home this evening, loved the movie World according to Garp. He was a BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH good actor as well as comedian, as seen in the movies Good Morning Viet Nam, 1Hour Photo, and Insomnia. I'll miss his rapid fire comic stylings as well. RIP Robin. :(
Harry P. Posted August 13, 2014 Author Posted August 13, 2014 I know I posted it Harry. It's "1 Hour Photo" Sorry, Roy, I must have missed your post. Not one of his well-known roles. In fact, I'd bet most RW fans would have forgotten it. But a great performance.
