RancheroSteve Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Yes, there was one. Built by Dearborn Steel Tubing and campaigned by Tasca Ford as an A/FX car during the '63 season, it briefly held the class record and served as a test bed for the better known '64 Thunderbolts. Resin kit, decals and paint by MCW. Chassis and engine from the Revell '64 Thunderbolt kit. Thanks for looking - questions, comments, etc. welcome.
Mike Kucaba Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Very nice and a sure controversy on any display table Also a 3-D piece of Drag racing history. Good work.
10thumbs Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Hi Steve, Very good looking model! I don't know much about Fords, but I did see often back in the day (I mean 1964, and 65) a 64 Thunderbolt from a near area at the local non-NHRA dragstrip. I can remember the car would really jump violently at green and the front wheels would invert, I mean the top of the wheels would really move towards the center line of the chassis. It was a 4 spd. car. I don't know the proper terminology, but I never noticed this on any other race car. It was a thrill to watch! Loud and quick and good looking. Is the hood scoop correct for this 63 model? Also, as I'm reading your intro, I thought the A/FX class came a year or so later. Good looking model. Michael
Force Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) Also, as I'm reading your intro, I thought the A/FX class came a year or so later. Michael NHRA instated the Factory Experimental class (FX) in 1962, the letter before (A, B, C) is the weight break, in this case weight to cubic inches instead of the weight to factory rated horsepower as in the Stock/Super Stock classes. One thing tho', the radically altered wheelbase cars of 64-65 were never allowed in the NHRA FX class even tho' most of them had the A/FX classification on them (NHRA didn't allow wheelbases altered more than 2%) so they were mostly used for match racing. Codi Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Steve, as a died in the wool Ford fan....nice build! Tim
Len Woodruff Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Nice build. My 1st car was 63 Fairlane Sport Coupe Wimbledon White with Black Interior.
1 bad55 stan Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 You have done a great job on this build,Very cool!!!
W-409 Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Yep, a very good looking Ford Fairlane. It's always nice to see a rarely seen subject executed so well. I like the stance and color choice on this one. The tires and wheels fit perfectly on place, too. How was the quality on that resin kit?
RancheroSteve Posted September 7, 2014 Author Posted September 7, 2014 Thanks for the kind words, guys! Pretty decent quality kit - not Modelhaus (of course), but very workable. The casting on some the smaller bits wasn't great, but the body and major parts were clean and straight. Also comes with a flat hood and wheel covers if you want to build a stock version. Very basic interior tub with the seats molded in. Bumpers and grille aren't plated, so I sent them out to be chromed (front bumper is painted fiberglass on the real car). Decals are are homemade (ALPS printed?) and have half-tone dots, but they lay down well and get the job done. I may have gotten the last set of decals, so email if you want to do this version and you're thinking of ordering. I've always had great service from MCW, by the way.
am73grand Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Man this thing is AWESOME!!! And I just had my car serviced at Tasca last week!!!
