ratnasty Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Hi guys this is Chuck I have gotten bored with the drag cars so I thought I would rebuild my third model I ever built as a kid. My model was the Bobby Unser Olsonite Eagle indy car. I remember it didn't go together very well and turn out to be a glue bomb , so I'll try again 40 years later I remember that that car built up and was too tall through the belly section and the front nose was raked to much so I have done some mod to it
ratnasty Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Here are some pics of the body mods
ratnasty Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 While letting body filler and primer dry I have started on the motor and here are progress pics thanks Chuck
ratnasty Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 I got around to putting some paint on the body and the kit decals didn't look very good . I found a decal maker that make Indy car decals and very well priced and very very good Alps quality decals and its called Indycal. Here are some pics painted and decaled with one 1 thin coat of clear to set the decals . later I shot a couple more coats of clear and sand it out with a final coat of clear thanks Chuck
Sixgunner68 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Wow! Great job on this one. Love the engine.
peekay Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Really nice work so far. Looks like you're going to really Nayl it. (Get it?)
ratnasty Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 thanks guys , I decided to build my own rear suspinsion from aluminum tubing , heim joints and coil overs from RB Motion . Here are some pics thanks again Chuck
ratnasty Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 I couldn't help myself , with all of the parts I built I needed to do a mock up to see if it all fitted and if the car had a good stance to it . I have had fun with this build except for the mounting of the rear wing with the instructions are about clear as mud and you have 6 pieces that have to all be glued together almost all at once correctly or the wing won't sit right or even mount on the car . Well here are the mock up pics thanks again Chuck
Mike Kucaba Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Looks good Chuck!! You've got a few more to do!
Monty Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Nice to know I'm not the only one who likes Indy cars from this era. Looks like yours is coming together nicely. I wondered if the AMT decals would still be usable after all this time, but I'm glad to hear you found a decal source that you're happy with. Have you found it difficult to find reference pictures for the engine? When I first started one of these kits over a decade ago, there didn't seem to be much info about it on the internet, so it went back in its box. Thanks for the link to your decal supplier.
Bernard Kron Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) What a great demonstration piece for modern modeling techniques and what they can do in skilled hands! The motor is breathtaking and the silhouette of the car, thanks to your re-fabrication of the tub, is gorgeous. These were beautiful cars and your model is sure to capture their graceful lines and efficiency. I'm glad you succumbed to the temptation of doing a mockup. Looking forward to more... om617 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Looks great. The engine and rear suspension would be a nice display even alone.
ratnasty Posted October 12, 2014 Author Posted October 12, 2014 Hello guys thanks a bunch , I didn't like the dash board with the raised gauges so I sanded then off and made a decal for the dash board .
ratnasty Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 well guys I finally got the engine assembly married with the body , now I'll start on the front suspension. I'm waiting on some coil overs from RB Motion I thought I had enough of them . Chuck
RancheroSteve Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Wow - excellent! Nice to see this one being done so well.
Art Anderson Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 So far, so good! Interesting build of a not-all-that-accurately-nor-well-done-kit (I've built perhaps a dozen of this kit, in various markings from the several years in which the Model 6 Eagle was still competitive). It's not an easy build to make look good, but you are coming along very well! Art
drodg Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Looks very good and I agree about the quality of Indycals decals.
Curt Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 I can only echo what the others have said about this kit being a bear to build out of the box and then not turning out to be a very accurate model. You are turning it into something very special.
