Chuck Most Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Ah the lost art of window-dressing That's how the local hobby shop takes care of the oversized "art" boxes.
MG Brown Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 This kit includes a surprising number of "extra" parts; I'd wager that a version of the kit with street stock and drag options will be released eventually.
Jon Cole Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) Inspired to pick up where I left off with my Tope 'stang. Well, my pic disappeared, and I can't seem to repost it.  Edited July 24, 2015 by Jon Cole
RancheroSteve Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Wow, did the rules allow them to run the tires that far outside the fender lip?
vamach1 Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Picture from that website of the car at Daytona.
MG Brown Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Jon- love the flare job. Hope to see that finished soon.
JTalmage Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Bob, where did you get the flat hood? Only place I knew of that sold the flat hood was A/FX Resin but they were sold and havent updated their site in years...
Bob Ellis Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I got the flat 1971 Mustang hood off eBay a couple of years ago. I just checked but can't find anymore. Seems like it was Missing Link? The tires are Round2
Jon Cole Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Like many race cars, Tope's was constantly evolving. At least I think that's the case. As what few photos there are, seem to have different details. As a model builder, that means it is hard to nail down anything for 100% accuracy.

Bob Ellis Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I checked Harts resin and couldn't find it. Unfortunately, I have thrown the packaging away.
Bob Ellis Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Jesse, I found it. Flat 1971-1973 Mustang hood was from t.m.resin seller on eBay. $4.99 plus $3 ship
vamach1 Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) For the flat hood check with Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland. I had Norm cast me a few from a hood I cut out of the Johan funny car so it would fit the AMT/MPC Mustangs. Edited February 19, 2015 by vamach1
Ron Hamilton Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Various AMT & MPC parts. If anyone in interested in 3 or 4 of the deep dish wheels send me a PM. 7173parts1 002.jpg7173parts1 004.jpg7173parts1 005.jpg The one set of wheels I would let go would need to be re-chromed or repainted as they are pretty dull. As far as I am concerned, there has NEVER beeen an accurate set of the base '71-'73 Mustang Hubcap and trim ring from anywhere. Kit, or Resin Aftermarket. The AMT caps have that funky dome in the middle, and the ones I got from the aftermarket were a litttle shallow, and did not have the indentation on the edge. I want to build this . I love this car, and I have everything but the wheels to do it.
JTalmage Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Bob Thanks for digging up the name.... I looked that seller up and contacted him.... turns out he was the guy to buy all the AF/X Resin molds.... he's been slowly repairing them and selling on ebay. Said he hasn't made the hood in years but will look into it. I suggested with the reissue of this kit they may be a hot item.
Bob Ellis Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) Ironically, the best hubcap/trim ring for a '71-'73 Mustang came from the worst model company; Palmer. Palmer only made 3 1/25 kits. They were the Corvette, Mustang and Dodge Challenger. The deteriorating chrome on the '70 kit makes the hubcap look smaller than it is. I was planning on using one of these for a Diamonds Are Forever '71 Mustang. The AMT '73 Mustang is basically a decent kit. It would be nice if somebody made a resin set of items to replace the stock items. I don't think Round2 will ever restore it back to stock. Edited February 20, 2015 by Bob Ellis

Dave Van Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) My spin on this kit........ The kit is a direct reissue of the last '72-73' legacy AMT Mustang kit. In my opinion it is a real mixed bag of parts. Lots of parts......some you need....many you do not. This tooling has been cut up and re-arranged so many times.......it's kinda a mess. It is not a BAD kit....just neither fish nor fowl. It's not a pure race car.....it's not a showroom kit. So R2 made the best of a bad situation......I bought one kit...only to support the effort. There are much better kits to build a Tope car from. The tires are cool....but again not 100% correct....just nice tires. Decals are a re-pop of the original. Again a updated improved set would have been nice. Earlier in this thread someone said this kit could make a nice short track car. I have used it to build a few. Simple builds for the shelf......far from a contest build. The Stick Elliott car that I saw run in the Charlotte area. Dale Earnhardt Sr also drove the car a few times. The Tope kit with it's soft molding and iffy grille area work well for these type cars!!! This build is from the legacy MPC version of the '72-73' Mustang that has a MUCH better race version. It's built up on the chassis with a GOOD roll cage and not random bars like the AMT kit I like this kit better in all areas. I also used the MPC to build a repro of the AMT Box art Tope car.....which was nothing like the real car!!!! A Tamiya rally driver was used for Warren and Penngwen decals used. I kinda wish R2 had used the MPC kit to make this 'new' Tope kit.....but I guess they wanted to make a repro of the original Tope kit. Edited February 20, 2015 by Dave Van
Bob Ellis Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 The MPC kit had more parts to make everybody happy than the AMT. Stock '71-73 grille missing after Boss 351 issue.
JTalmage Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I spoke w/ Jeff Ballard of Motor City Resin Casters via email and he offers the stock flat hood!
Pete L. Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Dave, I really like your oval track Mustang builds, any more pics on another thread ? Thanks,
Bob Ellis Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Does Motor City Resin have the small 71/72 bumper and grille?
Casey Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Does Motor City Resin have the small 71/72 bumper and grille? You can PM Jeff B from MCRC directly and ask him. : http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showuser=395
