Jeremy Jon Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 (edited) This is little build project I started, while in between waiting for components/design, etc. of others underway I saw that I could probably develop this scale model using some existing donor components, and so a minimal amount of more labor/time intensive work (like 3D design/printing) It was designed by Marcello Gandini (of Lamborghini Miura, Countach, Diablo fame & many more), and the child of engineer & builder Claudio Zampolli It came into the world during that time of the 1990's when bigger was better & the 200 mph supercars started to come into being The crazy bespoke V16 (yes, 16 cylinder) DOHC engine is it's heart, backed up by a ZF transaxle & unique transverse engine, while longitudinal transaxle, meaning the trans input shaft takes power from the centered output of the V16 block (not unlike an old Alfa Romeo design) Enjoy! Originally I had thought to use a cheap (and not greatly accurate anyways) Lambo Diablo kit, but it soon became evident that to satisfy my own personal minimum level of acceptable accuracy, that a wholly scratch built chassis would be required after all Edited December 29, 2014 by Jeremy Jon
Jeremy Jon Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 I started next on making the unique V16 engine & drivetrain Because the engine upper half & valve covers are readily displayed in the engine bay, I used some care in making that For consideration of final assembly, and ease in duplication, I decided to make the engine with head & valve cover(s) integral, but literally in half, so two halves joined make one compete engine, with only accessory ends and intake assembly needed after Also for same reason, I made the engine bellhousing & output housing as one piece, thus leaving the ZF transaxle as a separate component
Jeremy Jon Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 I designed the chassis plate to accept & situate the engine + transaxle components, making final assembly easy, and since the body work conceals much of the lower drivetrain & transaxle from visibility, then some detail is not necessary in those lower corners
ismaelg Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Another great project I'll follow. I was not aware of this car. The T powertrain layout is interesting.
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Always both highly entertaining and inspiring to watch your work. Great stuff going on here.
Deathgoblin Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Excellent scratchbuilding. I love watching to see what you come up with.
Kennyboy Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Always wanted to take on this project but I am glad you have instead Jeremy. I will follow this intently!!
Codi Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Jeremy, I actually remember when the real thing when it broke cover many many years ago. You're doing it justice. Great start on the engine and trans. This should be a fun thread to follow. Good luck with it! Tim
Jeremy Jon Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys, Miles, Bob, Ismael, Bill, Fabrizio, Brian, Ken & Tim Brizio, last PM was Nov 18, my reply to you about items I sent you & transporter, PM me again if you sent since then I've always liked this car too, was a unique '90's big supercar, and one of the first 200mph supercar crop to be sure I started on some accessory items, like manifolds, starter, etc. and then some cursory molds, pretty happy with how the first resin bits of the drivetrain came out Found a correct O.Z. racing 3-piece wheel, so now will modify it to make correct front & rear staggered set for model, and use the Tamiya F40 P-zero tires, which are correct for the car Edited December 29, 2014 by Jeremy Jon
Belugawrx Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Very nice scratching! That casting came out very sharp Always fun to watch your builds Jeremy Cheers
DrKerry Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Um, I'm quitting modeling now. Seriously jeremy, you do some awesome work. This is clearly a exclamation point to that!!!!
Jeremy Jon Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Thanks Kerry, no you can't stop man! I fight with finishing work (paint & decals especially) so I do scratch building ...besides, we gotta see your McFerrariLaren finished!
DrKerry Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Well ok, I won't stop....... As for the Ferrari McClaren she's at a stand still right now. I dropped the danger thing and blew the rear wheel to bits. Now I'm looking for a new set of wheels and tires for it but not having money to do so and finding the "right" looking wheels for it. Well it's been shelved until I can get a set of wheels under it. I still have the McLaren parts for you here!!!
kruleworld Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 i love how you detailed the engine particularly. overall, should be interesting to see how it goes.
