The Creative Explorer Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I seriously need to find the trick to bend time in my favour. Ever since I found a job, I lost the time to spend with my hobby's. After workinghours, I have to deal with wife and 2 young kids, go to the bathroom, take a shower, make dinner and deal with kids and wife in the evening again. Short after the oldest goes to bed, I watch a movie and have to go to bed, before the whole sharade repeats. I just had a 2 week vacation, so nice, and was able to finish my goal; finish at least one model. Which I finished just a few hours ago, on the last day of my vacation. It all starts monday again. How do you guys bend time?, or what is your secret formula?
JohnU Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Instead of watching a movie, sit at the bench instead. That's got to be at least a couple of hours. Unless this is wifey time! LOL! Mine prefers that I do bench time instead of staring at the "boob tube", it makes me more relaxed!
Twokidsnosleep Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 As the kids get older you think they will need you less and give you more spare time....right? Nope. Mine like to hang out and even do projects with me, help with school, go skiing they are my buds You gotta savour those moments, I will do my models when I am an old dead fart
Cliff Dagger Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Can you build at work on your lunch and break times ?
Erik Smith Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Uh, "deal with wife and kids"? Savor the time you get with both. Time doesn't bend, it goes. Fast. If I have time to work on models, great, but I would never resent time with my wife and kids.
Twokidsnosleep Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) Well put Erik "You don't know what you got till it's gone" Hopefully my eyes, co-ordination and health stay with me long enough Edited January 2, 2015 by Twokidsnosleep
Tom Geiger Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 You need to make a little time. As someone said above, build while you watch TV. Make small time slots to get one task done. For instance I know a guy who gets up early and works on a model for a half hour first thing in the morning. The thing is that he does this every day, so he does get a lot done! Carve out those 15 minute or half hour times that you may be wasting time, but don't think it's enough time to work on a model... do you spend 15 minutes waiting for dinner to be ready? Go sand something!
vettecote Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) I've always said that reality gets in the way of my hobbies....Joe Edited January 2, 2015 by vettecote
Modelbuilder Mark Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 It used to be the weekend was my build time, but that has become a little harder lately. For me, I make that time now after work most nights. I come in, shower etc, eat dinner, then into the model room until bed time. Even if I only get an hour a night on the weeknights, that is still 5 hours a week. And that is what I need to end my day anyway, that relaxing hobby time. If you have the little ones, do not sacrifice that time with them, but maybe start to include them in the hobby with you. Otherwise, I would trade in the TV time, and then only watch that on the weekends with the spouse.
jbwelda Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 ring ring seven am movie starts to roll again cold water in the face bring you back to this awful place... Magnificent Seven, The Clash and why aint the wife makin dinner? jb
afx Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 First create a dedicated building area, I converted a utility closet. I built a workbench installed lights, pegboard and shelving. Now I can leave my builds out as I work on them without having the put everything away each time. Second avoid TV. This is a huge time sucker.
pharoah Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 What they said.. The little ones are only going to be little for a short time. You should be glad you have a wife and kids. That's something I've never had. A hobby is just that-a hobby. it shouldn't rule your life. Build when you can,but don't obsess over it. You're only going to be young once,so enjoy it while you can.
Tony_B Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I'll echo most of what is said above, but my method is two things: 1. Get up 30 min. earlier in the am. 2. Try not to rush, but work in smaller bits. One day, I'll glue the motor together. Next, I'll sand it, and the third day I'll prime it/paint it. It's hard for me to be this way, because I really do want to work on the model, but it does give me something to look forward to....
lordairgtar Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 and why aint the wife makin dinner? jb Oh boy that's gonna cause a fire storm......
The Creative Explorer Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 Don't get me wrong guys, I love those moments with wifey and kids. I have a 3.75 year old and a 3 month old son. They consume a lot of time and I wouldn't want it any different. The movie watching time, is my quality time with my wife, we both enjoy a movie and that is a moment we have truelly for ourselves. Why wife is not cooking? Because I like it too much and my wife is already running the household. I need to help somewhere. Plus I get to decide what to eat haha. This whole topic wasn't put in a very serious way, more to see how other people are dealing with not enough time
SfanGoch Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Travel faster than the speed of light. The means to do that is currently on the FDA & DEA Controlled Substance List..

SfanGoch Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I do the cooking because my wife can't. Ever watch "Green Acres"? She cooks like Lisa Douglas.

lordairgtar Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 If this is how you truly see it, you don't deserve to enjoy a Hobby! That isn't for you to say. Who are you to tell anyone what they can deserve? Harsh, dude.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 You sound like you have your priorities straight We just need an extra day added to the week purely for our hobbies I thought that was Sunday. Sometimes I'll put in a movie downstairs and sand a car body while I'm watching it. If I feel like doing real work, like painting or Dremeling, I'll turn the movie on, go upstairs, and have the door open so I can hear it.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 That isn't for you to say. Who are you to tell anyone what they can deserve? Harsh, dude. Exactly. Even those who don't have time to do it, or the ones who aren't so great at it like myself, they deserve to enjoy it, too. Model on!
The Creative Explorer Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 Don't worry too much guys, I think James2 is a bit lost in translation or didn't read the whole thing right. I assume he read the inital post as a negative look at daily life, in that context, I understand his opinion. That being said; he could've replied a bit less harsh and verdicting. I think 2kidsnosleep nailed it, we just need a day for hobby. But it has to be a secret day, One kids and wife's don't know about haha. @Miles; Even the sunday's isn't a relaxing day much, usually church in the morning, followed with lunch at my parents. it'll be around 4 noon that we come home. And I visit my parents every week, they haven't reached the 60's yet, but I value my time with them. It will be too soon anyway before I have to part with them. I work as a mechanic now and before I used to have deskjobs. I can tell there is a huge difference in available time left for hobby. Nowadays, I have to get up at 5:30, where I got up at 8 with the deskjob. But I only get one hour sooner home. In the old situation, I had more time available after the kids go to bed with a deskjob than now. That is a noteable difference.
disabled modeler Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I have been doing it all wrong for years now...I build to pass the time away....
