Jonj238 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) I bought a few model kits that someone never put together off Ebay, and it included a tow truck bed. Most of the tow trucks you see are conventionals, so I thought a cab over would be a fun project, since I have 2 K-123 kits. First thing I did was move the rear suspension back and then lengthen the frame by 4 scale feet. Then I looked at if for a couple days, and shortened the frame back up. I decided I liked the short squatty look better. I also moved the fuel tanks back so they would fit under the wrecker body. I plan on painting it black, with red frame, wheels and inner wrecker bed. I did find out I was missing the little wheel that is on the end of the boom that the cable goes over, but I'm sure I will find something. Edited March 30, 2015 by Jonj238
72 Charger Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Nice progress so far Jon .I prefer the short look too . It looks tougher somehow I think
wayne swayze Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 This is gonna be great! I like the look of it a lot already!
Old Buckaroo Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Very nice, I had something similar on my to do list . There for awhile all that was being built was Heavy tow trucks. I decided to wait Here is a pic for you
gatorincebu Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Nice idea for a project. And yes at one time the COE wreckers seemed to be more prominent. Maybe because of the legnth laws or some thing? And now you have given me an idea for a build once I get moved. A day cab pete with that wrecker body ! Than ks for posting this and giving me the inspiration. Be Well Gator
Tesla Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Great idea for a wrecker...looking forward to this project.
Mopar - D Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 This is going to be a very interesting build to follow.
Jonj238 Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015 Thanks for all the encouragment. This is only my second build, so I hope my skills match the vision I have in my head.
heepey Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Great, looks like one I am working on. I guess I will start my own thread.
heepey Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I have an extra wheel that you are missing. let me know if you are interested in it.
Mike77 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Although I've never built one I like the "something a little different" look of COE wreckers. Yours looks great so far, can't wait to see the finished rig.
Jonj238 Posted February 9, 2015 Author Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) I got the frame painted. I also painted the cab and outer part of the bed. I had some issues with the black paint I used. The paint was some real old stuff I had lying around and I figured I would use it up. It turned out dull and looks like there is a ton of dirt in it. Must have gone bad. Sanding and polishing is not an option because to the rivets on the cab. I'm either going to have to strip it and try again, or I have been thinking that I might keep the old "tired" paint look and do some weathering. I still have a Rustall kit left over from my HO days. Anyway, this is my update. Edited March 2, 2015 by Jonj238
Scalper Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Nice... that is looking pretty cool... you don't see to many wreckers in black.
Rigzndiesel Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 You do nice work. This looks really cool so far, I can't wait to see the rest. Jeff
Jonj238 Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 I just thought I would post an update. I am making progress, although I must say this is the most challenging model kit I have ever worked with. Poor castings, warped parts, vague instructions, etc. A little more to do on the cab, then I am moving on to the bed.
kilrathy10 Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Looking good, Man....I like those decals.....Looks great over that black....
tbill Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 I like it, love the color combo, this is gonna be a tough looking rig when done.
checkmate Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Great concept and colour choice. Looking forward to watching this one come together.
Jonj238 Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Well, here it is, just about completed. I have a bit more touching up to do. Some polishing, and I need to add the marker lights on the box. I learned a lot on this build, so on to the next one.
