highway Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 ive seen lots of people build movie cars, and ive even seen people wanting to build Rockford files firebird, but I haven't heard anyone talk about ponches trans am, I wander y YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!! I was watching CHiP's last night and the episode had some nice shots of his car and the wheels started turning in my head. 70 T/A+close to correct paint=great model idea! The only thing that I think may be a challenge is the hood bird, because I noticed in the episode I watched last night which showed the top half of it in a shot, the bird is a brownish/gold color. Unless there is one in the aftermarket or in one of the AMT annual kits, it might be hard to source, since the only easily attainable kits to build Ponch's bird is the Revellogram 70 1/2 T/A, and they only have the small bird for the nose beak, and I think later 77 or 78 birds may be a little larger and a slightly different design than earlier 70s birds. The birds are just like the cars, different eras have different birds, some more noticeable than others like wing size and shape to the less noticeable direction of the way the bird is looking. I do think Ponch's bird would be an easier build than Rockford's though, since the 70 1/2 kit is a much easier find than the 74.
dublin boy Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I can't get CHiPs over here on youtube apart from the episode with the hearse... I watched the show as a kid, don't remember the car. Anyone got video or pics?

highway Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I can't get CHiPs over here on youtube apart from the episode with the hearse... I watched the show as a kid, don't remember the car. Anyone got video or pics? Here's a few I found thanks to a Google image search. I found not only the bird would be a challenge, but the hood as well. I don't know if it is a custom built piece or if it may have been a factory option, but the hood is a mix if the Formula and T/A hoods, the front scoops Formula and the shaker T/A. Also, as with most cars of this nature, all are different, as this close up does not have a hood bird: But this one does, and though the pic is small, it appears to have the correct early 70s bird: This one, which by the description was Jon flipping Ponch's Bird, has a totally incorrect 79 bird on it. Of course, not as incorrect as this pic I found!! That is clearly a 79 to 81 T/A, not a 70 1/2 to 73 as Ponch had, and clearly shows Revell has been making mistakes for over 35 years!!
highway Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Here are some better pics of the Birds themselves. The early 70s, the car is a 72 by the description: The Shaker equipped 79 to 81 Bird, later Turbo equipped birds were similar but had the head looking to the driver's side and the flames extended up the Turbo bulge in the hood: And the special "Super Bird" for the 79 10th anniversary edition, same as the standard but larger and the wings extended to the fenders and was not confined to the hood.

I think it had $50 or $60 price tag but it was sealed.
kruleworld Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Mad Max interceptor and panel and police cars You can get Aoshima's RW Interceptor, i know a guy who did a conversion kit, but not sure if he has any left. You can get the police cars from partsbox.com. no van unfortunately.
Drake69 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 The resin parts to convert the Mad Max Interceptor to the first movie are on ebay from time to time. The guy that makes the pieces is actually on this forum, so do a search for Mad Max Interceptor to find the threads about his and his work... Here it is... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/?showtopic=75292

w451973 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 What happened to the pic of the Firebird from Corvette Summer (now there's a Vette to build) ? Good movie. The hood is custom and not factory. What is that, NCIS ? I'll have to start watching that show.

southpier Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 maybe someone would be interested in these: http://spencer1984.com/my_models/indiana-jones-last-crusade.php
Tom Geiger Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Here's the Corvette Summer car. This one was built by Bob Schaffer and I took these photos years ago. More pix at the link: http://public.fotki.com/ModelCitizen/model_cars/corvette_summer/
Atmobil Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I started building the 57 Chevy from Return to Macon County last year. Will post a WIP thread on it here as soon as I finish the camper I'm currently building. http://imcdb.org/vehicle_109691-Chevrolet-Bel-Air-2454-1957.html I also have plans to build Al Bundys "Dodge", I got the AMT 71 Duster kit and I have gotten hold of a resin 72 grille and dash plus 72 tailights. http://imcdb.org/vehicle_2822-Plymouth-Duster-1972.html And on my shelf there is a kit from Aoshima of a Toyota Hiace from a Japanese tv show called Ainori 8 I think. I think it is called the Love Wagon, molded in very PINK plastic and it has and airlineticket for the built-up model on the side of the box. I wonder if they ment for people to send the televisoncompany or something like that. It says that the ticket is issued with Ainori airlines, Fuji Televison to Tokyo / Narita. Problem is that it was dated on Sepember 28th 2001 and it says that it is non refundable It also has a drawing of a cartoonlike elephant that looks to humping the globe on the side. A Japanese acid trip of a kit I guess
unclescott58 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 About the large "screaming chicken" decals on Trans Ams hoods. They were not offered on the real cars until 1973. And then as an option most years. The '70 - '72 Trans Ams were available in only two colors. Polar White with Blue stripe and a small Blue chicken. And Lucerne Blue with White stripes and a small White chicken. The "screaming chicken" was never offered from the factory with the dual scoop Formula hood. And the Trans Am shaker was never offered from the factory with the Formula hood either. Making Ponch's Firebird some kind of strange freak. Scott
Dave Van Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Not 100% correct......but about as much work I want to put into it. 99.9% will not notice the errors!!
ranma Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 What about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? Hard to find and never reissued.
Zarana-X Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I build the Road Warrior Interceptor. This certainly got far off from the CHiPs cars.
