Misha Posted November 6, 2013 Share Posted November 6, 2013 I've made living as a professional stage designer for theatre, completed a BFA and MFA and went on to be a professor teaching at a variety of western Canadian universities. One of the joys of my profession is the construction, usually in 1/48 scale, of a model of the design, in addition to the draftings, and colour renderings. Having built models my entire life, okay, from the age of eight, this came very easily to me. With my students I always stressed the notion of learning to look at things in scale, to see how an object could be utililized in a different scale to represent some other item. Model construction to many was difficult, especially since it is usually all scratch built. I was able to surprise a lot of my colleagues, who were used to using matte board for construction, with the introduction of Plastic! Using plastic sheets and extruded shapes made a world of difference in the final product. Overall it was always a bonus to include my passion for modelling with my profession. Cheers Misha My actual career choice was teaching, but I have a background in drafting and design (T-square and slide rule era) and graphic design (digital era), both of which rely on scale. I build different 1:1 stuff and draw scale plans before cutting anything. I'm building a car for the drag strip and find that looking at kits in my stash is easier than crawling under the darn thing to see what's under there. I made a 1:12 scale representation of my '68 Mustang with my computer and have used it to make decisions as to where to put the roll cage supports under the floor board. As for me for work....well, it depends on the day. Right now, I'm an independent contractor doing a variety of odds and ends businesses need (document management, paralegal work, training/employee development, etc.). Sometimes, I take photos for a service that provides verifications of goods for eBay purchases and banks. I play a little in real estate from time to time. I substitute-teach. I'm also trying to get into adjunct teaching for colleges. I do some paralegal work for friends who are lawyers. I'm in the process of starting a company offering modeling products, as well. If things go the way I want, some product will be available early next year. Lots of busy and ideas....not so much the money, but such is the "new" economy. Funny....doesn't seem to work so well.
